Examinining The Key Issues and Aspects Integral to Writing of a Research Proposal

A research proposal is a serious statement that addresses a researcher’s intent to conduct a study on a phenomenon and a plan about how to perform the research. Students usually undertake research under the guidance of a supervisor from faculty in tandem with assistance and supervision of other faculty members. Thus, the proposal should be a clear statement of intent that aims at elucidating the plan of research to make it feasible and acceptable for all parties concerned. The most essential characteristic of a research proposal is that it should be sufficient to present the researcher’s idea or question and expected outcomes with clarity and definition (the what). It should also make a case for the reason the researcher’s focus of study is significant and the value that it will bring to the discipline under study (the why).

An Analysis of Students' Problems in Writing a Research Proposal

This research aimed to determine undergraduate students' problems and factors causing the problems in writing a research proposal. Ninety-one English Education Study Program undergraduate students in FKIP Universitas Tanjungpura, Pontianak, West Kalimantan, participated in this research. This descriptive research used forty items in a questionnaire as the instrument modified from Dwihandini, Marhaeni, and Suarnajaya's (2013) model. The model utilized three factors causing students' problems in writing a research proposal, namely (1) psychological factors, (2) socio-cultural factors, and (3) linguistic factors. To report the findings of the results, the researcher used the descriptive statistics technique to display each factor's percentage score. The findings indicated that the score of linguistic factors got the highest (75,49%), which highly affected students' writing in research proposals. The conclusion is each factor causes problems, so it affects students in writing a research proposal, and linguistic factors become the dominant factor among others.

Writing research proposal

A research proposal is a written document specifying what a researcher intends to study and written before beginning the research which communicate research problem and proposed methods of solving it. A research proposal should be built on a concrete plan to conduct academic or scientific research. Types of proposals include internal, external, solicited, unsolicited, preproposals, continuation or non-competing and renewal or competing. Purpose of a Research Proposal is to convince the organization and readers .Characteristics need to be based on attention, interest, desire and action. Qualities of good proposal include specific scope, realistic nature, appropriate credentials, fulfill needs, beneficial, short and simple. Need for good preparation of proposal is vital in formulating proposal, assisting researcher and improving the research quality. Functions of Proposal consists to synthesize critical thinking, clarifies own thinking, refine proposed research, communicate ideas, open thinking and negotiation between researcher and involved parties. Basic composition of Proposal needs a beginning, middle and an end. Typical proposal format includes title, abstract, introduction, background, preliminary studies, research methodology, budget, curriculum vitae for principal investigators, appendix and human subjects. Proposal development strategies and writing tips includes use of outline , listings, visuals, forecasting , internal summaries , significant issues , sequencing components , review , edit , proof read , avoiding overkill point and errors. Proposals are turned down when problems are trivial, complex, nebulous, diffuse without clear aim, lack of sufficient evidence, imagination and originality.

Workshop on proposal writing on research for health care professionals: a brief report

A one-day workshop on proposal writing for research for health care professionals was organized by Hospital Research Board (HRB), Nepal Cancer Hospital and Research Center Pvt. Ltd, Harisiddhi, Lalitpur, Nepal on 2nd March 2019. The main aim of this workshop was to identify, motivate and prepare health care professionals for conducting research in their respective professional institution in collaboration. The workshop was facilitated by international and national resource persons. The deliberations of the workshop were focused on seven topics: "Turning research into impact, Essentials of the research protocol, Why proposals are rejected?, Plagiarism in medical research, Research with medical records, Grant writing workshop, Manuscript writing workshop" based on a presentation by the different resource persons. Ninety-nine persons participated in the workshop including physicians, medical oncologists, pharmacists, nurses and other allied health professionals. The interactive teaching-learning methods were utilized in all sessions of the workshop. The feedback of the participants was taken on semi-structured feedback format. Overall evaluations from the feedback forms showed that majority (90%) of the participants agreed that the workshop achieved its objectives with a major recommendation as to the allocation of short duration for the workshop and timely organize of research activities regarding scientific writing. In conclusion, the workshop on research proposal writing for health care professionals was successfully organized and the participants are looking forward for future ones.

WRITING RESEARCH AND EDUCATION PROPOSALS: DOs and DON'Ts

This paper presents some basic recommendations on the development of project proposal. The purpose of this paper is to describe the process of project proposal writing, to give recommendations for development of an effective proposal, and to discuss some of the commonly encountered mistakes while writing of the project proposal. Methods. The idea of the project and procedure of implementation of the proposed idea should be given in a concrete, logically connected and a clear way. In the process of the project planning and project proposal development the work flow chart of the project proposal should be followed. Results. Practical considerations are presented in the paper. Common faults in project proposals are discussed and a short guidance how to overcome the mistakes on project proposal development is presented. The author presents a list for further reading and using in one's practice. Conclusions. While development and writing of the project proposal one should keep in mind the importance of identifying the innovative idea fitting the priorities and requirements of the current call. It is necessary to select the proper research team which has expertize in the field of the planned or proposed project. Assessment of Research Faculty Development Program Efficacy in Writing Research Proposals

The dearth in research in Philippine higher education institutions (HEIs) had driven the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to provide policies and mandates that are largely geared towards the improvement of research productivity. Saint Mary's University responded through Faculty Research Development Program, a scheme borne of the plans of the University Research Center (IDP Year 2013-2014) that aims to strengthen and enhance the research skills of faculty members. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of the research faculty development program workshop in writing full-blown research proposals. It involved the quantitative type of research using the posttest-only control group experimental design since the subjects were evaluated after the intervention. Evaluative in nature, it was conducted at Saint Mary's University, located at Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya in Cagayan Valley. There were 25 subjects of the study who were all participants in the seminar-workshop. Researcher-made questionnaires and evaluated research proposals were the primary sources of the data in the study. Findings revealed that the research faculty development program workshop on writing research proposals was efficient. Hence, faculty members are highly recommended to continue participating in research capability training to become part of the tri-fold function of the university-the instruction, community extension, and research.
