Nature, Humans and Environmental Policy : How Can Development of Humans Coexist with the Environment? (original) (raw)
The reason for the failures of our environmental policies are not only in our“anthropocentric”views and over confidence in modern technology, but also in our negligence towards the humans’role in nature. To alter environmental policy,we do not, however, need to coincide with ideas such as deep ecology or“biocentrism”,which diminishes the human role in the environment. The author recommends learning from the relationships between men and nature in traditional communities, which humans are important part of the natural environment itself.

Scale Development in Human and Social Sciences: A Philosophical Perspective
Synthese Library, 2019
Explanation of human and social phenomena is often formulated using unobservable constructs, otherwise known as latent constructs. In this context, latent constructs are broadly understood as latent characteristics. Formally, latent constructs are interpreted as latent variables that influence the behavior of observed variables (items). Latent constructs are identified through measurement instruments, which are tested in specific samples using measurement models, representing the relationship between the latent variable and the items. Depending on the methodological guidelines that are followed during the development of measurement instruments, these measurement models will be tested using factor analytic techniques such as exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Historically, these techniques have been surrounded by various controversies and have generated their share of confusion. This chapter explores the conceptual and philosophical issues related to scale development in h...
Creating a Lesson for Elementary School Students about the “Safe Environment”
2015
This study aims to educate students about the “safe environment” (i.e., about disaster and crime prevention and traffic safety). This year, we have conducted a questionnaire survey about security and risks in the living environments (at home, on the school route, and at school), with fifth-grade students as participants (n = 38). In addition, we undertook fieldwork around the students’ school to test the efficacy of the proposal within the appropriate environment. Du...
Restoration of Biotic Interactions in Urban Settings
Journal of Urban Living and Health Association, 2006
In the cities of Japan, many green areas have recently been created not only as “green space for citizen’s amenity and relaxation” but also as “biotopes that harbor diverse birds, insects and wild plants”. However, the interactions between organisms in urban biotopes are fewer than and different from those in natural settings. Restoration and effective use of biotic interactions would help to qualitatively improve urban ecosystems. In this review, we illustrate a number of biotic interactions and propose methods for restoring or controlling them: (1) pollination and seed dispersal, (2) plant-herbivore-enemy interactions, (3) biological control of Microcystis using allelopathy, and (4) control of interactions between exotic and native organisms. In conclusion, (1) to restore biotic interactions in urban settings, an understanding of biotic interactions in the original ecosystems is required, (2) to prevent negative effects from alien species, the impact of alien on native species sho...
