Phytochemical characteristics and antioxidant capacity of fruit extracts of different prunus species

Fruits are one of the major sources of polyphenol compounds in human diet. These compounds are known to have many health-promoting activities, especially anticancer, antiradical and antioxidant effects. In this work, seven different Prunus species traditionally grown in south Bačka region of Vojvodina were investigated: blackthorn (P. spinosa), plum (P. domestica), apricot (P. armeniaca), cherry plum (P. cerasifera), sweet cherry (P. avium), sour cherry (P. cerasus) and mahaleb cherry (P. mahaleb). Freeze-dried fruits were evaluated in terms of their phytochemical characteristics and bioactivity, determining total content of phenolics, flavonoids and anthocyanins, total antioxidant capacity and antiproliferative effect on human colon cancer cells (HT29). Phytochemical Profiling and Biological Potential of Prunus dulcis Shell Extracts
Prunus dulcis is one of the most widely cultivated species in the world. Its fruit (almond) is rich in various nutritious and bioactive compounds that exert several beneficial effects. The aim of this study was to determine the chemical profile and evaluate the biological potential in vitro of almond shell extracts. The chemical analysis of shell extracts led to the identification of 15 com-pounds by HPLC-DAD of which 11 were first detected in the almond plant. Twenty-six volatile compounds were identified by the GC-MS technique, among them; seven were firstly detected in the studied plant. For the biological activities, the extracts demonstrated moderate inhibition potential against the antioxidant, antidiabetic, and cytotoxic activities. Apart from its essential oil, Prunus armeniaca L. kernel extract has received only scarce attention. The present study aimed to describe the lipid and polyphenolic composition of the dichloromethane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and ethanol extracts on the basis of hot extraction, performing analysis by gas chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. A total of 6 diacylglycerols (DAGs) and 18 triacylglycerols (TAGs) were detected as being present in all extracts, with the predominance of OLL (dilinoleyl-olein), OOL (dioleoyl-linolein), and OOO (triolein), with percentages ranging from 19.0–32.8%, 20.3–23.6%, and 12.1–20.1%, respectively. In the present work, fourteen cultivars of Prunus domestica were analysed to investigate their phenolic pattern with the purpose of using the leaves as potential resources of bioactive compounds in the pharmaceutical and food industry. Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction and sugaring-out liquid-liquid extraction techniques were optimized in order to obtain an exhaustive multi-component panel of phenolic compounds. The best phenolic-enriched recovery was achieved using MAE in water:methanol (30:70), and this procedure was further applied for quantitative analysis of phenolic compounds in real samples. EVALUATION OF THE ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITIES OF PRUNUS DOMESTICA WHOLE FRUIT: AN IN VITRO STUDY
Objective: Prunus domestica is known for its nutritional values and therapeutic properties. It contains rich amount of natural phenolic phytochemicals such as phenolic acids, flavonoids and anthocyanin. Previous reports suggest that prune extract and juice inhibit peroxidation process. As no detailed antioxidant property, particularly on the whole fruit was studied, in this investigation, we not only evaluated the detailed antioxidantive activities of different fractions of P. domestica fruit but also tried to correlate the same with total phenol and flavonoids contents. Methods: Simple warring blender method for extraction, folin- ciocalteu method for total phenolic content, aluminium chloride colorimetric method for total flavonoid content were employed. Different antioxidant activities such as total antioxidant, iron chelating, hydrogen peroxide scavenging of superoxide radical and reducing power method were performed. Result: Simple warring blender method, used in the present study for the preparation of whole fruit extract exhibited better yield potential, total phenolic and flavonoid contents. A comparative study of different fraction types indicated that ethyl acetate fraction had very high phenolic and flavonoid contents that also exhibited maximum antioxidant activity. Butanol fraction also showed somewhat similar results. Conclusion: Ethyl acetate and n-butanol fractions showed maximum antioxidative potential. Further studies will be helpful to explore its therapeutic potential in treating different chronic diseases.

This study aimed at establishing the optimal conditions for the classic extraction of phenolic compounds from Prunus spinosa L. fruits. The effects of different parameters, i.e., ethanol concentration in the extraction solvent (mixture of ethanol and water), operation temperature, and extraction time, on process responses were evaluated. Total phenolic content (TPC), total anthocyanin content (TAC), antioxidant capacity (AC), and contents of protocatechuic acid (PA), caffeic acid (CA), vanillic acid (VA), rutin hydrate (RH), and quercetin (Q) of fruit extracts were selected as process responses. A synergistic effect of obtaining high values of TPC, TAC, AC, PA, and VA was achieved for the extraction in 50% ethanol at 60 °C for 30 min.
