Learning Management Systems Use in Science Education

Learning management systems have become increasingly attractive in recent times. Modern education is highly technical dependent and this has redefined teaching learning process. Learning management systems have positive implications in education. Learning management systems are considered to be largely applicable for natural sciences as they enable representation of phenomena, foster experimental study and enable the creation of models and problem solving applications

Learning does not take place only in the classroom. E-learning is a way of learning supported by Information Communication Technologies (ICT) that makes possible to deliver education and training to anyone, anytime and anywhere. Our work describes the implementation of on-line learning in the area of secondary education for teaching Natural Sciences in Greece. Moodle is used for the creation of the virtual classroom. Asynchronous and synchronous communication is tried especially among the students as well as between students and the instructor aiming at cooperative learning. E-learning tools and strategies were adopted. The positive attitude that is observed towards the model of blended learning and the Learning Management System (LMS) Moodle, do not appear to have high cross-correlation with the use and intention of use. This fact is also verified by the system’s log files of students’ participation in the attendance of internet courses and by the final acceptance questionnaire.

TECHNOLOGY PLAYS SUPPORTING ROLE IN LEARNING CYCLE APPROACH FOR SCIENCE EDUCATION

Learning cycle approach is an inquiry-based learning. Teachers need to know how to create an environment that engages all students. Learning cycle approach’s goal is to improve learning and provide students with more authentic science experience that imitate those real scientists and are in accordance with the nature of science. The role of Science and Technology is crucial in achieving social and economic objectives. To act as an engine of development, Science and Technology must take the lead to stable improvements in human conditions by expanding the range of people’s choices, a belief that the concept of Human Development tries to capture

Literature Review in Science Education and the Role of ICT: Promise, Problems and Future Directions

Today, what "counts" as science and science teaching is in a state of flux. This, however, is not new - for 150 years there have been debates about the purpose, nature and role of science education in our society. Any designer of resources and tools for the teaching of science therefore needs to be able to understand these debates, and to be aware of the origins and reasons for the changes that are currently taking place.

Successful Implementation of Technology to Teach Science

A Research Handbook on Frameworks and Approaches

In this review of recent literature on the use of technology to teach science content, 143 articles from 8 science education journals were selected and analyzed for the use of technologies in teaching science, pedagogies employed, and successes of the implementations. The resultant data provides a snapshot on how technology is being used in the teaching and learning of science, and the research methods used to explore these issues. Levels of research and levels of success were developed and applied to the article data set to characterize the types of research and technology implementations described in the literature. Articles that showed high levels of successful implementation of technology along with a high level of research were explored and explained in greater detail. The review underscores the research trend toward using technology to illustrate abstract concepts and make objects that are invisible to the naked eye, visible and malleable in computer modeling programs.
