Brazil, with about 3000 species of orchids, is one of the world regions with the greatest biodiversity of this family. Inside the country, the Atlantic Rain Forest, very devastated over the years, it's probably one of the richest biomes. The “Serra do Castelo”, in the state of Espirito Santo, is one of the greatest diversity of this biome sites and therefore one of the areas where there is the largest number of orchid species: about 700. To display all of them, four volumes were required . In the first part, the study area is presented in its various aspects: geography, geology, climate, endemism, natural history of orchids and history of its discoverers. The second part is dedicated to the presentation of 700 species, divided into 145 genera, belonging to three subfamilies: taxonomy, geographical distribution, material studied, complete morphological description, accompanied whenever possible with a photograph of colored flower and a botanical board.
