Women In Online Social Networks: Meanings And Experiences Of Use In Their Daily Lifes

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the use of online social networks to improve the digital inclusion of women and to overcome the digital gender gap in Spain (South) and Portugal (North). The opportunities that information and communication technologies implicate for women, in the processes of change, are seen as an important perspective to the current research about the relationship between women and technology (Azevedo & Seixas, 2009). The rapid expansion of online social networking has led to changes in the traditional roles of individuals, from passive consumers to agents who transform and produce knowledge. The sharing of online content on websites, blogs, Facebook or Twitter was the beginning of a practice that currently goes beyond merely an informational dimension, to become a digital agora. Today, the social network Facebook in particular has become the setting in which diverse communities have developed, exchanging information, constructing and sharing knowledge, d...

Social networking experiences on Facebook : a survey of gender differences amongst students : original research

Acta Commercii, 2014

Orientation: Students' membership and participation in social networking sites, such as Facebook, has increased in recent years. Research purpose: The study examined students' access to social network sites and compared male and female students' usage of Facebook with regards to time commitment, privacy concerns, and the creation and/or maintenance of relationships. Motivation: The study adds to the existing academic literature on this topic by providing a South African perspective. Research design, approach and method: Two-hundred self-administered questionnaires were distributed using convenience sampling. The statistical analysis that was used included Mann-Whitney U-test, t-test and ANOVA analysis. Main findings: Students connect to social networking sites everyday primarily via their mobile phones. Female students reported spending more time on Facebook whilst at the same time expressing more concern for their privacy. Moreover, students were found to use Facebook to maintain existing offline friendships more so than creating new relationships. Managerial implications: Social networking sites such as Facebook play an important role in students' everyday interpersonal communication. Practically, Facebook provides lecturers, parents and businesses the opportunity to communicate with students in a fast and cost-effective way. Therefore, insight into the variables studied could help marketers and Social Network Site operators to manage privacy concerns in order to effectively target, advertise and communicate with students. Contribution: Although past research has concentrated on the study of Facebook in terms of privacy and members' uses little research has been conducted on gender differences in this regard, more so within a South African context. Furthermore demographic variables such as gender influence motives and behaviour, as such making the analysis demographics essential.

Analysis of the Presence of Women on Facebook Social Network in Afghanistan Based on Butler's Theory of Gender Confusion

International Journal of Law Management and Humanities, 2023

The Facebook social network is an emerging and young phenomenon that accounts for half of Afghanistan's Internet users. This research has been done about women's behavior in cyberspace and the roles that women show of themselves, especially on Facebook, based on Judith Butler's perspective of gender confusion. This research method is a survey and a questionnaire used to collect data. The statistical population of the research is the female citizens of Sheberghan city, and the research sample size is 384 women using Cochran's formula. The relationship between the presence of women and culture, ruling traditions, patriarchal discourse, and social norms are the hypotheses of this research. The study's findings showed a correlation between the presence of women in social networks and the works of the ruling culture and traditions. RK=0.072 shows a positive sign that the effects of culture and ruling traditions greatly impact how women are present in social networks. There is also a positive correlation between the presence of women in social networks and the discourse of the patriarch; RK=0.061 gives a positive ratio that the discourse of the patriarch affects the presence of women in social networks. Also, there is a positive correlation between the presence of women in social networks and the effects of social norms, with RK=0.055 for the positive relationship, which shows that the effects of social norms impact the presence of women in social networks. Also, from the results of this research, it was found that there is a positive relationship between marital status, income, the field of study, and education status over the presence of women.

Compliance and resistance: An investigation into the construction of gender identities by Pakistani women on Facebook

Asian Journal of Women's Studies

Facebook has recently gained popularity among young, digitally literate and predominantly urban Pakistanis. Such social networking sites allow users the freedom to express themselves using usernames, visuals and topics of their own choice. In this article, I examine how Pakistani Facebook users mobilize such resources in their identity work. Using Multimodal Discourse Analysis, I investigate how Pakistani women construct their gender identities on Facebook using visual and linguistic resources. The results revealed the significant impact of Facebook on the socio-cultural and linguistic norms of discourse in Pakistan that enables women to challenge established communication models while they simultaneously reinforce traditional gender models. KEYWORDS Facebook; gender identities; multimodal discourse analysis; Pakistan; women Introduction Social media provide people with platforms for building and maintaining social relations with other individuals, regardless of age, language, ethnicity, color, region, sex or religion (boyd & Ellison, 2007). The popularity of social media resides in the diverse range of resources such as audios, videos, visuals, text and gifs that are on offer for online communication. However, these also offer a means of communication that facilitates transgression of traditional gendered social interactions. This is especially important contexts like Pakistan, where women who choose to express their individuality, assert rights, exercise freedom of choice, voice opinions openly, and move in the public sphere among or with men, all of which may often be looked down
