The article gives an overview of the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) system from the point of view of the students/learners and pedagogues / academic counsellors in the ODL system. The paper discusses the role of the academic counsellors in the ODL system and the qualities and skills required by them for being effective in their works. The paper also focuses on the various stages of academic counselling and the ways of organising the counselling sessions.

The purpose of this article is to analyse and to explicate the subtle differences between some of the basic concepts related to what used to be called rather unanimously 'distance education'. What these different concepts have in common is a shared comprehension of a growing number of learning experiences meaningful to human beings taking place outside of the institutionalised educational systems. In distance education, and especially in the different variations now available, there has been a progressive increase in learner control of and widened access to resources, as well as in the emphasis placed on thinking skills and on metacognitive skills related to learning strategies. More and more teachers and teacher educators are becoming cognisant of the fact that these variations of distance education are constantly gaining ground as they are becoming located more centrally in the mainstream educational systems. Keywords: Distance education; distance teaching and learning; open learning; open and distance learning; flexible learning; distributed learning; flexi-mode learning; mixed-mode learning.
Current developments and best practice in open and distance learning
… open and distance learning, 2000
Through the many documents regularly emitted by those dedicated to this activity, it is comparatively easy to describe factual developments in the field of open and distance education in different places in the world. However, it is much more difficult to produce judgements of value about their quality. Quality is a subjective rather than an absolute concept and may be examined from different analytical perspectives: consumers' satisfaction level, intrinsic value of scientific and technical content of learning materials, soundness of learning strategies, efficiency of organisation and procedures, adequate use of advanced technologies, reliability of student support mechanisms, etc. These parameters should be put into the context of specific objectives, nature of target populations and availability of different kinds of resources. In a specific geographic, social, economic and cultural situation a given set of solutions might be judged as adequate and deserving the qualification of "good practice", while in a different context it could be considered of rather poor quality. The selection of examples in this article is the sole responsibility of the authors: neither should the chosen cases be considered as clearly better than any other one, nor missing cases be interpreted as lack of appreciation or a negative judgement. Finally, the authors are aware of the risks of interpreting trends and trying to extrapolate them into the near future: readers should use their own judgement in accepting (or forcefully rejecting) these projections.
Distance learning : Practice and dilemmas
2006
In accordance with the European processes of integrated and homogeneous education, the paper presents the essential viewpoints and questions covering the establishment and development of DL in Republic of Croatia. It starts from the advantages of distance learning versus traditional education taking into account some pedagogical terms of reference for distance learning, arguments for organizing and systematic development of distance learning.

A Theoretical Framework on Open and Distance Learning
Many studies have been carried out targeting Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and related fields. Thanks to the rapid development in technology, which can be a common ground for many fields, interdisciplinary studies among various fields have gained importance resulting in integration of different concepts both into ODL and other fields. With this in mind the purpose of this study is to investigate the main domains of ODL by categorizing research terms and issues, which may lead to a theoretical framework. In this study ten peer-reviewed journals were selected to investigate. 584 research articles published in these journals from 2009 to 2014 have been analyzed and categorized. According to the study, technology, pedagogy, theory, policy, accessibility, design, environment and management domains emerged. Also articles were analyzed for TF-IDF scores according to years and n-grams were created. The study concludes that although there have been many new and ongoing studies in the field of ODL, the field of ODL has been growing needing novelties in research, theory and application of ODL.

ON THE PEDAGOGY OF OPEN AND DISTANCE LEARNING SYSTEMS
ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to investigate the pedagogical issues concerning Open and Distance Learning (ODL) systems through a critical review of the relevant published work. The review categorized articles into three categories, namely theoretical approaches, technological approaches and evaluation studies. The review showed that open and distance learning is mainly technology driven.

The concept of open learning and distance education system focuses on open access to education and training to make the learners free from the constraints of time and place, and offering flexible learning opportunities to individuals and groups of learners. Open and distance learning (ODL)is one of the most rapidly growing fields of education now a days and it has substantial impact on all education delivery systems[1,2,3]. The new ODL system growing fast because of the development of Internet-based information technologies, and in particular the World Wide Web. The concept of ODL education came from idea where the learners and the teachers can not be in a class room and they should be separated by some geographical distance or may be they can not come close to each other to make the entire education system flexible. The distance education is not a new concept. In the late 1800s, at the University of Chicago, the first launched major correspondence program in the US in which the tea...
