The use of Quizlet to enhance vocabulary in the English language classroom

This research focuses on vocabulary acquisition in foreign language learning. The latest trends of teaching as well as the huge advance of technology allow teachers to utilize online and mobile applications through diverse apps. This quasi-experimental design research investigated Quizlet, in its mobile version, on vocabulary acquisition in English as a Foreign Language (EFL). One group of A2 (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) EFL learners at a state secondary school in Valencia (Spain) (N=24) participated in this study. Learners from the Treatment group (henceforth, T-group) underwent a pre-test and a post-test to assess their acquisition of the assigned vocabulary lessons which were extracted from the course syllabus. After utilizing Quizlet for vocabulary learning for the academic year 2017-2018, the results proved that these learners improved significantly their level of EFL vocabulary at the post-test. Accordingly, this research recommends utilizing Quizlet in its mobile version at secondary education.

Vocabulary learning in second and/or foreign languages is needed to make effective communication and it is impossible to use a language effectively without an adequate vocabulary and to master other skills in English. However, many senior high school students have poor knowledge of vocabulary mastery because the process of remembering vocabulary is considered bored and stressful. This study is focused to investigate the student perceptions of the use of Quizlet in learning English vocabulary. The total participation is five students from senior high school. The interview was used to obtain information and explanations related to the student perceptions of learning English vocabulary. The data was analyzed through thematic analysis for classification and summary purposes. The results showed that Quizlet is effective to learn vocabulary interestingly and it makes the students felt more enthusiastic in learning English vocabulary. The Use of Quizlet as a Vocabulary Acquisition Learning Media for Eleventh Grade Students

Language learners tend to have a limited amount of vocabulary. This problem limits them from using and understanding a broad coverage of speech or text in a foreign language. One of the reasons causing this matter is the lack of teachers' awareness of how to teach vocabulary for language learners. Quizlet is one of many applications used for vocabulary learning. This study focused on analyzing the use of Quizlet as a learning media for improving students' vocabulary. It also aimed to find out the students' perceptions of the use of Quizlet for learning new vocabulary. This research is using a one-group quasi-experimental research design. The data were collected using tests, field notes, and questionnaires. The results show that the students' acquisition of both productive and receptive vocabulary has increased after the treatment. The students' receptive vocabulary shows a greater increase compared to the productive one. The students' responses to the use of Quizlet as learning media are positive. They agree that the application is beneficial and easy to use. The results of this study provide additional insights on how Quizlet should be utilized so that it can be used as a learning media for vocabulary learning effectively.
The Effect of Quizlet on Vocabulary Acquisition
This study concerns with the major objective of foreign language teaching: vocabulary acquisition. The modern trends of teaching and the vast advance of technology enable teachers to use online and mobile applications in a very wide range. The real effect of using such a method need to be measured. Accordingly, this experimental-design study investigated the effect of Quizlet, a rapidly growing application with an online and mobile phone version, on vocabulary acquisition. Two groups of low-level EFL learners at Prince Sattam Bin Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia (N = 42) participated in the study. Each group underwent a pretest and a posttest to assess their acquisition of the assigned vocabulary lessons that were extracted from their syllabus. After using Quizlet for vocabulary learning for a month, the experimental group participants show a significant improvement in vocabulary posttest. Accordingly, the study acknowledges and recommends using the application at university level.
Effect of Using Quizlet Toward Students’ Vocabulary Mastery

The aim of this research was to know if there is significant effect of using Quizlet toward student vocabulary mastery. This research was using quasi-experimental research with two types of variable. First variable was the application of Quizlet as the independent variable while the second variable was the vocabulary mastery as the dependent variable. The samples in this research are students of eleventh grade at SMA Negeri 2 Trenggalek they were MIPA 2 as experimental group and MIPA 5 as control group. The experimental group was using Quizlet as learning media while the control group was not. The instrument was to collect the data of this research by pre-test and post-test. After the data was collected, the researcher analyzed the data by using independent sample t-test. Based on test the Sig. (2-tailed) of post-test were 0.000 <0.05, than as the basic rules of making independent sample t-test, it can be concluded that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. Thus, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the average student learning outcomes in the experimental group and the control group. So, Quizlet application is an effective learning media for students' vocabulary mastery
Checking the Effectiveness of Quizlet as a Tool for Vocabulary Learning

Inspired by the need to aid low-proficiency English users to increase their knowledge of vocabulary, this preliminary study measures the success of digital-flashcard users by comparing their vocabulary test scores to those of non-users in the same class. Thirty-two, low-level, first year students in Tamagawa Universitys English as a Lingua Franca program were asked to use Quizlet® to prepare for tests that would recycle fill-in-the-blank contents from the flashcards available on this Web 2.0 application. On average, learners in the class who used gap-fill flashcards with the application scored higher on these tests, and moderately higher on tests with new contents for the same vocabulary. The need for more homogeneous experimentation is acknowledged. In addition, the need for more extrinsic motivation to encourage spaced repetition is considered as means for improving Quizlet-user success on tests of extrapolated knowledge.

Increasing motivation is necessary for students in learning English vocabulary. The higher motivation the students gain, the bigger success they achieve in mastering vocabulary. Due to the advance of technology a number of tools have emerged for the purpose of language learning. Quizlet, a language learning tool, aims to help students learn vocabulary. This study aims to investigate the impact of Quizlet on English for Foreign Language (EFL) foundation students' vocabulary acquisition at Rustaq College of Education in the Sultanate of Oman. Specifically, this study answers one research question: How does the use of Quizlet influence EFL foundation students' vocabulary learning at Rustaq College of Education in Oman? The foundation students were exposed to a series of Quizlet study sets containing certain topics taken from their prescribed curriculum. Within these, they learnt a number of vocabulary individually and collaboratively. Pre-and post-tests were implemented to gauge foundation students' performances and acquisition in vocabulary. Additionally, focus groups were also conducted to investigate their vocabulary learning experience pertaining to integrating Quizlet into EFL classrooms. The findings revealed that the foundation students' performances in vocabulary acquisition significantly increased. Although Quizlet has created a challenging and collaborative learning environment, more language skills should be incorporated in Quizlet to help students to learn vocabulary faster and in an interesting way. This study is significant as it can contribute to the English Language Teaching (ELT) literature pertaining to the innovative and technological tools that can enhance students' language skills in the 21st century. It is also important to English teachers and their students in finding various ways of teaching and learning vocabulary in and outside classrooms.
USING QUIZLET IN GENERATING LEARNERS' AUTONOMY IN LEARNING ENGLISH VOCABULARY
This paper presents some major findings of a recent study on the application of Quizlet in teaching English. One of the two objectives of this study is to see how autonomous learners are in learning vocabulary. 60 sophomore students from Thai Nguyen University of Economics and Business Administration took part in a 10-week experiment. In the first five weeks, the students were taught without Quizlet implementation, while in the five weeks of the second phase, Quizlet was relied on to facilitate vocabulary learning. Two survey questionnaires were delivered to the participants, before and after the experiment, to investigate their attitude towards learning vocabulary via Quizlet. The data analyses reveal that students feel more excited and eager to learn vocabulary; they became more active and more autonomous. Thus, it can be concluded that using Quizlet in teaching English vocabulary is beneficial to learners in the way that it can facilitate independent learning. Hopefully, these findings can encourage teachers, as well as learners, to use Quizlet more often in teaching and learning English, especially in the era of modern technology.
