The Impact of Digital Comic-based Modules on Students’ Achievement in English Proficiency Test

Many students face difficulties in passing the English Proficiency Test (EPT) score of 450; whereas it is one of the graduation requirements students must meet. This study aimed to investigate the impact of digital comic-based modules on students’ English Proficiency Test (EPT) achievement. The modules were used during the EPT preparation class which was held for 16 meetings. This was pre-experimental research with one group pretest-posttest design. One hundred fifty-seven (157) undergraduate students from two different majors, Nursing and Computer Engineering participated in this study. The data were collected by administering pretest and posttest EPT which consisted of 140 questions in total. Then, the scores were analyzed statistically using paired-sample t-test and effect size. The era of education that is influenced by the industrial revolution 4.0 is characterized by the use of digital technology in the learning process, including language learning. Digital comics, then, become an advantageous instructional media in order to improve students’ skill in English as well as their motivation. This exploratory study examines English teachers’ views on the use of digital comics on learning and teaching English as a foreign language (EFL). A 20 item survey questionnaire was distributed to 30 English teachers from different schools in Banten Province who have applied comics as a teaching aid in the English classroom. Improving Vocabulary Ability by Using Comic

The aims of this research are how to improve vocabulary using comic and how to motivate the students to apply it in their English. The research is guided by a conceptual framework leading to the use of comic through peer work to improve their motivation to speak English during the process of classroom communication interaction. The research method employs an action research. The subject consists of 20 students of the first grade of SMK Al Hidayah 1 Cilandak in 2015-2016 academic year. The research data is collected by using test (test after the first treatment and test after the second treatment) and by observation for collecting data on the students' motivation in improving vocabulary ability using series pictures. Data on vocabulary ability using comic was analysed by using descriptive and statistic analysis, to know the improvement in the student's mean score after the first cycle and the second cycle. Based on the first cycle, the students' average is 67.8, then, on the second treatment, the students' average increases to be 78.8. It can be concluded that teaching vocabulary using comic can improve students' vocabulary ability.

The purpose of the study was to find out significant difference of the students’ English writing scores between those who are taught using comic strips and who taught are using non-comic strips of X graders students of SMA Muhammadiyah of Palangka Raya. Effect of Conventional and digital Comic Strips on Iranian Young EFL Learners Reading Skill and Creativity

Reading should be an active and fluent process in learning another language. Often, however, it is not. All learners who experience reading difficulties have comprehension problem. For many young learners, these comprehension problems might arise because of inaccurate or inefficient decoding and word recognition processes. Moreover, motivational factors also affect comprehension. This is because some young learners could comprehend simple word and sentences but have difficulty understanding longer texts. To make young learners to read Comic strips due to short sentences and picture accompanied are more attractive and seem easier to read for young learners. Furthermore, Digital comic strips have more educational benefits in addition of making reading attractive. They not only make young learners interested in reading but also make them enthusiastic to learn vocabulary and imperceptibly force them to check their grammar accuracy. So, by using Conventional comic strips and Digital comic strips young learner are expected to be more interested and having less problem in reading and reading comprehension. There are very little research which has focused on comics that not only improve reading comprehension but also enhance creativity. Visual illustration such as comics can help EFL students with comprehension. In addition to pictures, teachers can utilize comics to help students to make connection between key ideas. In this study, a new way for teaching and learning reading will be employed by using comics. However in Iranian school, especially primary school teacher hardly implement comics in order to teaching reading so the present study will investigate that how conventional and digital comic strips can improve reading comprehension on Iranian young students.

The Using of the Comic Application as Learning Medium for Islamic Study in Elementary School

The study aimed to analyze how students evaluate the comic application as a learning medium, how to design a comic application product as a literacy medium for students in studying Islamic teachings. The study was carried out in two stages, first; the quantitative method by conducting surveys, second; the prototype method by making application products. The data in the first stage was taken through a questionnaire to 108 samples from 500 populations in several schools in Medan. The second stage was the creating of comic application product design by identifying problems, analyzing user needs, designing products according to user needs, making products that have been planned, and validating to the experts. The results of the first stage showed that 46% of respondents liked comics as a literacy medium, 12% did not like them, and 36% were neutral. This research aims at finding out the efficacy of using Digital Comics in teaching reading to senior high school students. The main question of this research: Is the use of Digital Comics effective in teaching reading to senior high school students? The utilization of digital comics in this pandemic situation may become a valuable solution. In fact, many challenges and obstacles faced by students regarding the implementation of online learning.
