The communication process in virtual teams

The purpose of this paper is to present the paradigms of virtual teams in the communication process in the context of the existing literature in this field. We argue the above issues and we explore the communication process within virtual teams like an interactive, complex and limiting process in connexion with the advantages and disadvantages offered by information technology.
Analysis of Communication Methods for Improving Communication in Virtual Teams
Virtual teams face challenges using communication technologies to communicate and collaborate. The lack of face-to-face interaction makes engaging virtual team members more difficult than in a traditional team. Recommendations will be discussed on improving communication and engagement right from the start. Hence members will be engaged until the end and eventually improve project outcomes. Expert interviews will be conducted with the general guide approach. With this methodological approach, interviewees have the role of a consultant. The analyzed success factors in the interviews are communication, technology and engagement, which are drawn from literature. The interview results are evaluated through qualitative analysis. Results will be discussed and possible recommendations will be developed on how to improve communication and engagement in virtual teams right at the outset of a project. A mind map visualizes the results drawn from the interviews, which presents the possible solutions: Internal and external rules, brand identity, gamification and the buddy program.

In recent years, organizations operate more and more with virtual teams, but they must be organized and managed efficiently. Therefore, the paper briefly presents the main aspects of communication management in virtual teams. The work is structured in 3 parts: introduction where is presented the context of the subject, the 2nd part focuses on general aspects regarding the virtual teams (concept, factors that contribute to the formation of virtual teams, and types of virtual teams). The 3rd part presents the communication management of virtual teams (organization and management of virtual teams), and finally a management model in virtual communication is conceptualized.
Virtual communicating, conflicts and performance in teams

Purpose -This paper aims to examine the influence of the level of team virtuality on the effects of intra-team conflicts on team performance, which have hardly been investigated. Design/methodology/approach -A framework is proposed based on the extent to which team members use communication media to coordinate their actions and execute their tasks, taking into account the extent to which the communication media are synchronous and the extent to which the communication media convey para-verbal and nonverbal aspects of communication. Data of 49 teams with 172 team members were analyzed using stepwise multiple regression analysis. Findings -The level of team virtuality influences the relation between intra-team conflict and perceived team performance. The higher the level of team virtuality, the greater the positive impact of task conflict on perceived team performance. In teams with a low level of virtuality task conflict has a negative impact on perceived team performance, and in high virtual teams task conflict has a positive impact. In addition, process conflict has a negative impact on perceived team performance.
Direct Communication versus Virtual Communication in Virtual Teams

Several studies suggest that computer-mediated communication can lead to decreases in group effectiveness and reduce satisfaction levels in terms of trust and comfort of its users. Supported by an experiment, where the emotional or affective aspects of communication were tested with the experimentation of two architectures, Direct Communication Architecture (DCA) and the Virtual Communication Architecture (VCA) this paper validates the thesis that, from the users' perspective, there is no opposition to the acceptance of virtual environments and interfaces for communication, and that these environments are able to cope with the reconfiguration dynamics requirements of virtual teams or client-server relations in a virtual enterprise operation.

Abstract Distributed work teams are increasingly being implemented to enhance organizational flexibility and competitiveness in today's complex and rapidly changing work environment. Electronic media is used to enable or facilitate their communication. Though an increasing number of employees work in such settings, there is little investigation of the performance of communication-based work processes in supporting their work in the multiple teams.

This project involves the construction, implementation and study of an ambitious online simulation, in the service of studying team work and information sharing characteristics. We focus on the propensity of teams to make use of communication and information technologies, on their tendency to share information, and on the antecedents of demand and use of online information exchange modalities such as electronic mail.

Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) is providing businesses with the means of assembling virtual teams comprising of members in diverse locations. However research shows that virtual team dynamics are different from face to face dynamics. Recent research adds force to the view that conflicts are more prevalent within virtual teams since participants are less likely to change their initial points of view when discussions are held virtually. This insight has implications for IS development since many IS are developed by virtual project teams. It is relevant to systems analysis since according to systems thinkers the process should include a discussion about alternative points of view leading to a group level shared view of the situation under analysis.
