The Linguistic Features of Onomatopoeia Words in Arabic- English: Contrastive Study

A few of studies have investigated English Onomatopoeia in its own and in terms of relations to the other languages such as: French, Korean, Japanese, Chinese and many others.However, this paper aims to investigating onomatopoeia and making a comparison between Arabic and English. This paper answers the following questions: are onomatopoeic expressions having the same categorization in both languages? Do they have one meaning or multiple meanings? Do they have the same common linguistic features either in sound or meaning? This paper uses the contrastive methodology which compares between various onomatopoeic words in Arabic and English. The collected data are 14 words for each language which also show the limitation of the study. The data are analyzed explicitly by tables. The results showed that English and Arabic are tuned languages and both can use onomatopoeia in different situation and settings, such as technology and poetry. It proves that Arabic and English languages have similarities due to the category, meaning and same sounds of the onomatopoeia words. This paper also aims to contribute the knowledge by inventing a new typology and classification of onomatopoeia to both languages English and Arabic in terms of using onomatopoeia and linguistic hyponym.

Translating onomatopoeia: An attempt toward translation strategies

Peculiar characteristics of onomatopoeia as a type of word often cause challenges for learners, trainers, and translators of any language. The present study aimed to investigate translation of onomatopoeias in order to present applicable strategies for the translation process. To achieve objectives of the study, related works of other researchers and a case study including a Persian literary work i.e. the first book of the Masnavi by Mowlana Jalal ad-Din Mohammad Balkhi (1993), also known as Rumi, and its English translation by Jawid Mojaddedi (2004) were used. Translation of Onomatopoeia: Somewhere between Equivalence and Function

English-Persian translation of novels deals with the challenges of understanding and transferring different linguistic aspects such as those of onomatopoeias. These elements are expected to create difficulties for translators as they are realized differently in English and Persian. Although some studies have been done to identify onomatopoeias in different languages, they are less debated in the area of translation. This study concentrates on English translation of 125 onomatopoeias in the novel A Tale of Two cities written by Charles Dickens and their Persian translations done by two translators. It aims at identifying English onomatopoeias in the corpus and the translation techniques used for translating them by the two translators. Furthermore, taking prospective approach, it comparatively assesses the two translated versions in terms of their success of translation of onomatopoeias from English into Persian. Finally this study aims at proposing a guideline which helps the translators to translate onomatopoeias in English Novels into Persian.

The Functions of Onomatopoeia in Modern English and Arabic Poetry: A Study in Selected Poems by Lawrence and al-Sayyab

Onomatopoeia has always been a functional poetic device which enjoys a high sound significance in the poetry of many languages. In modern English and Arabic poetry alike, it proves to be vital and useful at different levels: musical, thematic and at the level of meaning. Still, the cultural difference looms large over the ways it is employed by the poets of each. The present paper investigates the employment of onomatopoeia in the poetry of D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930) and Badr Shakir al-Sayyab (1926-1964) who are chosen due to the importance they enjoy in modern English and Arabic poetry and the richness of their poems in onomatopoeias. The conclusions reached at are in a sense related to cultural differences which govern the use of onomatopoeia for specific aims rather than for others.

Analysis Onomatopoeia in Selected Poems by Lee Emmett

The aims of this article are to analysis onomatopoeia with use some poems of Lee Emmett. There are five poems that have been analyzed: running water, Bake a Cake, wind and rain, the gentle sound of rain, and See the Skater. These articles, Authors apply observation method and note taking technique. The process of this article covers several steps such as read the poems, identify, and make a table to collect Onomatopoeia word. From five poems that have been analyzed, there are two types of onomatopoeia word; primary onomatopoeia (PR) and secondary onomatopoeia (SC). Onomatopoeia found as many as 21 words. From 21words, the dominant types and meaning that used in five poems are secondary onomatopoeia; 15 words. This article is to help readers easier to understand the meaning of sound trough poems by Lee Emmet.

Semantic Analysis of Phraseol Sis of Phraseological Uni Ogical Units with Onomastic Components

Аbstract. This article discusses phraseological units with onomastic components in the English, Russian and Uzbek languages from the point of semantic pecularities. It is known that initially, onomastic components were used in their direct meaning but later, it had figurative meaning being as a component of phraseological units. From this point, onomastic components according to their dominant meaning, they expressed neagtive and positive connotations. The present article analyzes the meaning and form of onomatopoeias in Tjwao, a Khoe-Kwadi (Kalahari Khoe) language. Making use of a prototype approach to categorization, a corpus of 113 onomatopoeic lexemes were tested for their compliance with the semantic, phonetic, and morphological features associated with the prototype of onomatopoeias in scholarly literature. The evidence demonstrates that Tjwao onomatopoeias tend to instantiate the prototype fully. This signifies, in turn, that, as far as their phonetics and morphology are concerned, Tjwao onomatopoeias tend to be extra-systematic.

Onomatopoeic Words in Slovak: Everyday Use and Stylistic Function

Onomatopoeias-words that echo sounds from the extra-linguistic reality-are usually understood as units representing a direct relationship between form and meaning. Lexical onomatopoeias are part of a language system, and their meaning can be found in dictionaries. It is assumed that onomatopoeias are crucial in communication by and to infants and are also considered important stylistic devices in poetry. However, they seem to be only marginal in adults' speech. This paper presents the results of an analysis of the understanding of Slovak onomatopoeias in everyday communication as well as of the stylistic dimension of these expressions in poetry. First, attention was paid to the comprehension of sound-imitating words in context by the sample of 30 native Slovak language speakers. Then, a sample of ten Slovak poems, well-known due to their usage of various sound-symbolic elements (onomatopoeias included) as stylistic devices, was examined to verify the supposed stylistic dimension of onomatopoeias in poetry. The results indicate that the understanding of the real meaning of lexical onomatopoeias depends on the specifics of the context and that onomatopoeias play a less important role in poetry than expected.

Onomatopoeias of Contemporary Ukrainian Poetry in the Aspect of Artistic Synthesis

The associative conceits, evoked by a concrete image in an author, a reader, or a speaker of a free-verse lyrical work, often get divergent, bearing a resemblance to the complicated system of concentric circles. However, they would converge on the certain level of perception, owing to the fact that the coincidences of associative fields are able to reveal the archetypal content of initial images. Establishment and development of the problematic circle in Ukrainian free verses of the 20 th-the beginning of the 21 st century can be described by combinations of urban and rural elements, setting up and solving the existential binary oppositions, reflections over the national renaissance of the homeland, and personification of nature. This was what has conditioned the openness of free verse form to artistic synthesis. There is impossible not to notice the echo of impressionistic arts in the up-to-date interpretations of landscape lyrics in freeverse works of the period analyzed (written by M. Semenko, V. Polischuk, R. Kudlyk, and I. Andrusiak). Particularly, it is expedient to talk about the combination of painting (showing an object under various angles and lighting), poetry (operating with a large array of tropes and figures to fix the impression and to suggest it to a reader), and music. Therefore, the artistic imagery of a poetic work synthesizes the visual and audible component in its intonation dimension. This will significantly enlarge the volume of esthetic information, together with the speaker's emotional attitude which is able to suggest an image expressed in a poem to a reader. To reach the proper acoustic effect, poets use the ideophones (or onomatopoeias) and puns connected with them to create either overt or latent metaphors, constructing the image of a sounding thing or entity. Sometimes onomatopoeias get substantiated in poetry, taking even the role of subjects or predicates. This can not only create the audible artistic conceit, but also give it a sense-making function. This way the poet can concentrate any audible element to 'a point within an idiom,' activating the imagination and artistic thinking of a poem's addressee.

An Analysis on Onomatopoeic Words and their Translation Procedures in Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban and Its Translation Version

Novel as the most famous genre of literature always succeeds to please its readers with its own way. It offers many stylistic language features such as onomatopoeia that can alure the readers to enter its world. Onomatopoeia is one of the most appealing feature in the novel Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban. This research discusses the onomatopoeic words. For the purpose of the research, two problems are formulated. The first problem is what word classes of onomatopoeia and the second problem of the research is on the procedures applied in translating the onomatopoeia found in the novel. This research is a qualitative and library research. Based on the analysis, there are 58 onomatopoeic words found. The onomatopoeic words are of different word classes; namely verb, noun, adjective and interjection. Most of the onomatopoeic words are verbs. There are five translation procedures used by the translator in translating the onomatopoeic words of the source text into the target text. They are borrowing (2 data), literal translation (14 data), transposition (8 data), modulation (1 data) and equivalence (33 data). Equivalence appears to be the most frequently used.
