Micro-study on Telework Activity

Logos Universality Mentality Education Novelty: Economics & Administrative Sciences, 2021

This paper is a micro-study on telework activity, the author wanting to highlight certain aspects of this form by which today's employees can perform their own tasks that they perform in order to obtain salaries. Starting from the economic meaning of the concept of “work”, we come to the presentation of some advantages and disadvantages that appear, the institutional framework applicable to telework in Romania is adequately treated, resorting to some quantitative or qualitative approaches. The investigations also reveal, in addition to benefits for employees and employers, some risks regarding data protection and surveillance systems, difficulties arising from living in apartments with large family members, high and unforeseen costs, etc.

Inhibitors and motivators for telework: some Finnish experiences

European Journal of Information Systems, 1999

Nordic countries have traditionally been forerunners in both usage of telecommunication and restructuring of working life. Both elements are strongly involved in telework, and so there might be a lesson to be learnt from Nordic telework projects. In the article, four Finnish telework initiatives are studied. Reasons for starting them are sought and their results are being evaluated. Further factors making the daily telework easier or more difficult are explicated. Conclusions are drawn from the cases, and their characteristics are compared with those of other European telework initiatives.

Research Regarding Telework and Its Impact on the Employee and the Organization

Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research), 2020

Purpose-The paper aims to present arguments for considering telework as a support process for sustainable business globalization. Methodology/approach-A questionnaire-based research study was conducted on a sample of 268 Romanian people between 4-29 May 2020, in order to identify some aspects regarding respondents' opinion on telework and its impact on the employee and the organization. Findings-Hypotheses regarding telework comparison to work performed at the employer's premises and changes occurred in the relationship with the organization were tested using SPSS. Our main results show that more than 50% of the respondents consider the changes involved by working remotely as being positive. Research limitations/implications-The research was non-random, based on both judgment and accessibility, the results being valid at the sample level. Practical implications-The main conclusion shows a positive perception of the respondents regarding telework impact. Employees may accept to work remotely, and this form of work organization can be considered in some fields of activity as a solution for business continuity in case of crisis. Originality/value-The paper gives arguments for including the telework risk analysis among the company's processes risk analysis. The organizations' management must be prepared to manage telework implementation and to consider it as a part of Business Continuity Plan.

Investigating the Impact of Teleworking Model on Work Performance and Work Conditions in a Romanian Family Business

Proceedings of the ... International Management Conference, 2022

This research provides an analysis of the teleworking model during the times of pandemic COVID-19 and of the impact on employees' efficiency and shows how the business continuity was assured in a particular setup-a family business. Employing the single case study research methodology, this investigation intends to offer insights of the teleworking model in terms of interviewees' perceptions concerning the work conditions and work performance. The time framework analysed covers the period from March 2020 to June 2021. The data used was obtained through semi-structured interviews with key persons from relevant departments of the company, complemented with information extracted from internal reports. Several concepts related to the teleworking model are addressed: work performance, working conditions and individual perception of employees in respect to teleworking. Our analysis highlights employees' difficulties to adapt to the new work model caused by the absence of interactions with colleagues, which, in a family business, are assimilated to family members. The research acknowledges the need for digitalization of the company's processes and for maintaining the hybrid model of working in order to ensure the business continuousness. Our study contributes to the knowledge of how the teleworking model influences employees and family businesses, during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Teleworking: The Link between Worker, Family and Company

Systems

Telework is presented as a model of work organisation that changes the paradigms of business culture in many organisations, reshaping established management and social systems. The COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions applied to the mobility and concentration of people have accelerated the implementation of telework, generating an accelerated change in organisational models. Telework dynamics significantly transform many aspects of the business, social and personal environment. The research community has investigated: work performance; the environment; technology; social factors; and work–life balance, among other issues. However, it is necessary to know in greater depth what the most salient aspects related to telework are. To this end, a total of 539 publications from the Web of Science database between 1984 and 2021 were analysed using bibliometric techniques. The results obtained indicate an outstanding interest in this subject in the last two years. The research comes from ma...

Telework in Europe and Latvia: State-of-the-art and Future Prospects

Purpose of the article: More usually companies are using telework – a wide-spread practice that allows employees and their tasks to be shared across settings away from central place of business or physical organizational location. Flexible work arrangements are increasingly seen as a key in helping women and men strike a better balance between work, private and family life. Moreover, telework may serve as a tool for regional development as it allows reaching the concentration of resources by using information and communication technologies. Methodology/methods: The article has been prepared based on the analysis of primary and secondary sources, outcome synthesis and the evaluation of results of a survey of public officials of Latvia (n=1244) and semi-structured interviews with five teleworkers. Scientific aim: The purpose of this research is to assess the demand for telework in Latvia and make suggestions for the facilitation of telework (not only in metropolitan, but also less populated areas) by taking into account the European experience. Findings: Even if the issue of telework (distant work, smart work) can be found in the European Commission's agenda the level of employees in European Union working as teleworkers is still rather low. The Latvian case study shows that there is a potential to extend the use of telework. Young people who have established their own business are the first in line to become teleworkers. Also public sector officials would like to be involved in teleworking and believe that it would increase their performance. However, most of the employed are sceptical about the use of telework. Conclusions: Explanatory and encouraging measures could help to foster the use of telework. Establishment of smart work centers could be a promising solution for further spread of telework, including the countryside, thus also facilitating the regional development.

Managing telework: an introduction to the issues

In this opening chapter, we outline the key issues managers must address if they are to manage teleworkers effectively. By examining the salient issues, we develop a framework for understanding telework. In essence, the framework provides a basis for the rest of the chapters in this book. The approach we take in this book is unashamedly behavioural. This is not to say other approaches are not important -not least the technology that enables telework or the taxation issues that surround telework (see e.g. . We take this approach because the management of teleworkers, as a human process, means understanding the social and organisational context of telework, and modifying management systems and approaches to match these contexts. Before we move onto describing our framework and introducing the rest of the chapters in the book, we examine why telework has become so popular and define what we mean by telework.

Practices and trends of telework in the Portuguese industry: the results of surveys in the textile, metal and software sectors

2005

The aim of the TeleRisk Project on labour relations and professional risks within the context of teleworking in Portugal – supported by IDICT – Institute for Development and Inspection of Working Conditions (Ministry of Labour), is to study the practices and forms of teleworking in the manufacturing sectors in Portugal. The project chose also the software industry as a reference sector, even though it does not intend to exclude from the study any other sector of activity or the so-called “hybrid” forms of work. However, the latter must have some of the characteristics of telework. The project thus takes into account the so-called “traditional” sectors of activity, namely textile and machinery and metal engineering (machinery and equipment), not usually associated to this type of work. However, telework could include, in the so-called “traditional” sectors, other variations that are not found in technologically based sectors. One of the evaluation methods for the dynamics associated to telework consisted in carrying out surveys by means of questionnaires, aimed at employers in the sectors analysed. This paper presents some of the results of those surveys. It is important to mention that, being a preliminary analysis, it means that it does not pretend to have exhausted all the issues in the survey, but has meant that it shows the bigger tendencies, in terms of teleworking practices, of the Portuguese industry.

One study – different stories. The multi-method perspective in studying telework

Przegląd Socjologiczny, 2018

The main goal of the paper is a methodological reflection on telework studies that are realized in the private environment. we reconstruct the process of creating "the story" about telework that started from the "individualistic point" (his/her story) of the teleworker, treated as an individual, and ended up in a "collective point", that understands telework as a phenomenon that needs to be studied in reference to other local actors (their story) and is influenced by the autoethnographic perspective of the group of researchers (our story).
