Evaluating Hamas’ Struggle in Palestine
Insight Turkey, 2020
This article examines the history and outcomes of Hamas’ involvement in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. By using published sources and conducting interviews with five incumbent Hamas officials living abroad, the article evaluates the group’s achievements and failures since the onset of its active role in the military struggle against Israel and in Palestinian politics against the other main actor, Fatah. It concludes that Hamas, while achieving some success in its military struggle against Israel, has not delivered the expectations of the Palestinian people, partly because it was squeezed into to the Gaza Strip by the Palestinian Authority (PA), and partly because international actors have blocked aid from entering the Hamas-controlled areas. Hamas is expected to continue fighting, but may partially withdraw from politics, as the people of Gaza are not happy with its governance due to higher unemployment, as well as the Israeli blockade and attacks.

Hamas' Historical Legacy and its Involvement in Palestinian Issue

Hamas, Islamic Resistance Movement, is an acronym of Harakat al-Muqawamah al-Islamiaah aims to contribute to the efforts to liberate Palestine vis-à-vis restoration of the rights of Palestinian people from the Zionist occupation. The restoration and liberation are subject to the consecrated Islamic teaching as a project of national liberation. Hamas has been a de-facto governing authority of the Gaza Strip. As a scion of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas was established to liberate Palestine from the Jewish occupation. Intifada I thrust upon that Palestine is a land of Islamic Waqf. It provided an opportunity for Hamas to liberate house land against Israel. The Madrid-Oslo Accords act as a catalyst between Israel and Palestine for backdoor negotiations for the Declaration of Principles (DOPs). The Destructive Grip of Hamas on Gaza Strip
Hamas, has been classified as a terrorist organization by the US, UK, EU, and Israel. As a result of their main purpose, which is to completely destroy the sovereign State of Israel, they are conducting a variety of deadly terrorist activities. The purpose of this essay is to investigate the lack of good governance by Hamas in the Gaza Strip, as a very important result of their destructive attitude and activities towards the state of Israel, and even their own residents. Although there have been some relative failures and successes during the process of conflict between Hamas and the state of Israel; it seems to be impossible to create a truly sustainable and peaceful relationship between the neighboring entities under the current circumstances. To emphasize the main argument about the cause for the lack of good governance in the Gaza Strip explicitly: the nature and goal of the terrorist organization Hamas, is the total destruction of the sovereign state of Israel, in which all means seem to be justified. It must be clear that there will be no true opportunity to strive for sustainable peace, in order to install good governance in the Gaza Strip, unless they change their ideology to recognize the sovereignty of the state of Israel, and act upon accordingly.

The Hamas Tightrope: Between Political Institutionalization and Armed Struggle
Strategic Assessment - The Institute for National Security Studies, 2018
Hamas, which was established as a social-religious movement, has evolved from a terror organization and violent non-state actor into a semi-state actor in control of the Gaza Strip and its population, endowed with the political and national responsibility of a national actor. This development has handed Hamas the obligation to maneuver between realizing its identity as an ideological resistance movement and implementing its responsibilities as a governing entity. In particular, it must balance elements that encourage violence against others that seek to restrain violence, while managing the tension between the need to institutionalize itself as a national actor and what it sees as its duty to maintain the ethos of resistance. The relatively restrained manner in which it faces these tensions gives external players, particularly Israel and Egypt, opportunities to limit the movement’s level of violence and focus on its institutionalization processes.
Hamas and Israel: Conflicting Strategies of Group-Based Politics
This monograph considers the changing fortunes of the Palestinian movement, HAMAS, and the recent outcomes of Israeli strategies aimed against this group and Palestinian nationalism external to the Fatah faction of the Palestinian Authority. The example of HAMAS challenges much of the current wisdom on "insurgencies" and their containment.
