The younger group showed a significantly higher level of recognition for health care staff, psychological problems, information and education, social support, hospital services needs. In addition, the higher educated group showed a higher level of recogniti...

Study on Stress and Burnout in Medical Education at the School of Korean Medicine

Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry, 2015

Objectives: Medical students suffer from mental health and academic problems due to academic stress. We investigated academic stress and exhaustion along with psychological issues caused by medical education during the years in the School of Korean Medicine. Methods: Two hundred fifty-one university students from the School of Korean Medicine, Pusan National University, were asked to complete the Medical Stress Scale (MSS), Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (MBI-SS), Positive Affect and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) three times during each semester for two years from 2013 onwards. We analyzed the influence of school term and vacation on educational stress and negative affect with the T-test. The Pearson's correlation analysis and regression analysis were used to predict changes during the first semester or first years of study in the School of Korean Medicine. Results: Academic stress and burnout increased steadily until the first semester of third grade, which was measured with MSS and MBI-SS. The anxiety level was highest when the students started the first grade and it decreased significantly after the first semester. Negative affect repeatedly increased significantly after each school term; however, it reduced after each vacation. In the first grade, 19.5% of the last measure of MSS can be explained with the first measure of MSS. Discussion: This study extensively reviewed the trends and characteristics of four years of academic stress and its related psychological influence, and discussed its importance for developing a more efficient academic curriculum for traditional Korean Medicine.

The Temperament and Character Inventory for Integrative Medicine

Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry, 2014

Objectives: The Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), initially developed by Dr. Cloninger in 1986, has been studied from various perspectives in many countries; however, its application in Korea has been limited due to a lack of information regarding the clinical use of integrative medicine. Methods and Results: A systematic review of previous studies on the theoretical development, structure, and content of temperament and character scales, as well as their stability and variability, is presented. In addition, the distinctive features of TCI as a biopsychosocial model and its clinical application regarding well-being, coherence therapy, and person-centered medicine were systematically reviewed. Discussion and Conclusion: The promotion of well-being with Cloninger's personality model and its importance for integrative medicine were discussed. This study would contribute to the clinical application of TCI in Korea.

Effects of a Physical Therapy Program on Quality of Life, and Neck and Shoulder Disability in Patients With Head and Neck Cancer

Han-gukjeonmunmullichiryohakoeji, 2013

This study examined the effects of a physical therapy program on quality of life (QOL), and neck and shoulder disability in head and neck cancer patients. The program included neck and shoulder range of motion (ROM) exercises, massage, progressive strengthening exercises, and stretching exercises. Sixteen patients who were assigned to an experimental group performed physical therapy for 40 minutes three times a week for eight weeks. Fifteen other patients were assigned to a control group who did not performed the physical therapy program. The European organization for research and treatment of cancer (EORTC QLQ-C30) and head and neck (EORTC QLQ-H&N) instruments, and the Neck Disability Index (NDI) were assessed before and after the rehabilitation program. The 40-minute program consisted of a 10-minute ROM exercise for the neck and shoulder, a 10-minute massage and 15-minute of progressive resistance exercises, followed by a five-minute stretching exercises. Statistically significant differences were noted for changes in global health, physical function in the EORTC QLQ-C30 and cancer related symptoms in the EORTC QLQ-H&N35 (p<.05). The NDI also showed significant differences (p<.05). Physical therapy may therefore benefit the physical aspects and QOL and improve neck and shoulder disability in patients with head and neck cancer.

Hwajaeng-Seon(和諍禪), or Hwajaeng as Seon(禪)

Korean Journal of Rhetoric, 2018

Historically, the Hwajaeng(和諍) theory of Wonhyo(617-686) can not be rightly understood without the consideration of the two main axes: IlsimHwajaengMuae(一心-和諍-無碍) and Gwi-il-sim-weon Yo-ik-jung-saeng(歸一心源 饒益衆生). From the perspective of recent WonhyoSeon(禪) researches, where these two axes seem to play the same role, Hwajaeng need to be inevitably HwajaengSeon(禪). However, the WonhyoSeon(禪), as presented in these researches, is not only easy to understand ‘theoretically’, but also seems very difficult to practice, because it needs particlularly a very high level achivement in Ilsim(一心). In this situation, the ConscienceSeon(良心禪) of the Philosophy of Conscience lead us to understand and practice relatively easily Hwajaeng as HwajaengSeon(和諍禪), even before the Experience of Enlightment, no matter what is our level in Ilsim(一心). The ConscienceSeon, which can be said to be a modern version of the WonhyoSeon, is ‘Six ParamitasSeon’, for Six Paramitas are the very Virtues of the Conscience(良心). The WhajaengSeon can be defined as «Immersion and ImmersionThinking about Hwajaeng or Hwajaeng research, as Jungyong’s ‘Hakmunsabyeonhaeng’(學問思辯行), accompanied by Metacognitive Six Paramitas Analysis». The ImmersionThinking is possible only if the TrueSelf is awaked by Immersion in our Ego(generally more than 51%). The interpretation of Seonjeong(禪定) and Jihye(智慧), two basic axes of ‘Seon Practice’(禪修行), into ‘Immersion and ImmersionThinking’ means the «Humanistic Turn», that of Buddhist WonhyoSeon into Spiritual ConscienceSeon. To search continously the insightful «Way of Jungyong(中庸)», intending ‘the Perfecting of Self for perfecting Others’(自利利他), based on the TrueSelf, this ceaseless pursuit of harmony between Six Paramitas and Jungyong, in various cases of Hwajaeng or Hwajaeng research, is the core of the WhajaengSeon.

Study on the Temperament Construct of Sasang Typology with Biopsychological Measures

Korean Journal of Oriental Physiology & Pathology, 2013

The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric structure of Sasang typology with four personality measures and examine the construct validity of Sasang Personality Questionnaire (SPQ). We measured biopsychological traits of 104 university students using SPQ, Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), NEO-Personality Inventory (NEO-PI) and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). The construct validity of SPQ was analyzed with TCI, NEO-PI and MBTI using Pearson's correlation. The temperament features of each Sasang groups were compared with Analysis of Variance and Profile Analysis. The SPQ showed significant correlation with TCI Novelty-Seeking (r=.398), TCI Harm-Avoidance (r=-.333), TCI Reward-Dependence (r=.465), TCI Self-Directedness (r=0.340), NEO-PI Extraversion (r=0.489) and MBTI Extraversion-Introversion (r=-0.509). The SPQ, TCI and NEO-PI revealed significant differences between Sasang constitutional groups. We examined the temperament construct of the Sasang typology and the validity of SPQ with well established western biopsychosocial instruments. This study would contribute to the objective studies on the biopsychosocial mechanism of Sasang medicine.
