The long-term preservation of the digital heritage: the case of universities institutional repositories = La conservazione a lungo termine del patrimonio digitale: il caso degli archivi istituzionali delle università

The long term preservation of the content of a digital repository is a challenge for all professions that rely on continuing accessibility to accurate and authentic sources. Undoubtedly, the requirements and constraints for such preservation are dependent on the application domain. In particular, archival material requires particular attention to issues such as trustworthiness, accountability, evidentiary use, moral and legal rights, and privacy. However, increasingly also non archival materials are falling under similar requirements and constraints. So, one of the key questions regarding digital preservation becomes: what are the lessons that the managers of digital repositories of all kinds can learn from digital archivists? This article will present examples from the InterPARES 3 case studies to illustrate common problems and pitfalls as well as common solutions. La conservazione a lungo termine del contenuto di un archivio digitale è una sfida per tutte le professioni, che si ba...

La conservazione a lungo termine del patrimonio digitale: il caso degli archivi istituzionali delle università

2010

The article faces the problems related to long-term preservation of the digital archives content. Archival material requires a special attentio due to credibility, juridical value, moral and legal rights, and privacy. The need to ensure accessibility and integrity of informatic data is a problem that involves all aspects and fields of informatization, and it is closely related to metadata choice and duplication. Through the analysis of the case-study represented by cIrcle, the istitutional digital repository della University of British Columbia (UBC), the article shows problems, risks, and solutions in managing a digital archive, showing that the professional experience of archivists can be useful in order to develop technological systems for non-archivistic contents.

Transformed Into Digital Resources - a New Life for the Cultural Heritage Related Research and Scientific Archives

Digital Presentation and Preservation of Cultural and Scientific Heritage, 2019

For decades, museum specialists have kept their research on paperprecious invaluable work. Today, this lost knowledge can be made available again. By digitalizing these studies and providing them with open access will offer scope for a deeper study of the Bulgarian cultural heritage, an integral part of which are the works of the investigators, ethnographers, historians, archaeologists. The paper gives a further look into the process of digitalizing old studies related to the cultural heritage initially from the archives of Regional historical museum Burgas. The described model is universal and can be a base for other cultural organizations that would like the ability to open their archives up to third parties, make them easy accessible, easy to maintain and become more sustainable.

Digital archiving of specific scientific information in the Czech Republic

Data Science Journal, 2005

This paper deals with a description of activities in the Czech Republic related to digital archiving. First of all the general situation in the field is described in order to give insight in the state of art in the field in the Czech Republic. The key part of this paper deals with a description of the design and implementation of a pilot system that should serve for digital archiving of scientific information of certain kind -MSc and PhD theses at Czech Technical University in Prague. One of the reasons for archiving of this type of information was the fact that these theses contain information about scientific and technological developments in a given period of time. Such information might be widely appreciated in future by historians who will investigate the history of science and technology of a certain period of time. The research is oriented towards robust archiving systems that can be used in small-scale applications. These small systems do not offer universal solutions in the field of digital archiving -they solve problems that become urgent in various applications: to save current digital documents in the form that could be transferable to general archiving systems developed later. The described implementation is a pilot practical solution to this problem. The approach described in the paper will allow the user to archive also documents that contain non-textual information.

Preservation of Cultural and Scientific Heritage by Means of Digital Libraries

Concepts, Methodologies, Tools, and Applications

The entire world's cultural and educational resources are being more and more produced, distributed and accessed in digital form, rather than on paper. Born-digital heritage available on-line, including electronic journals, World Wide Web pages or on-line databases, are now an integral part of the world's cultural heritage. Consequently preservation of cultural and scientific heritage has undergone substantial changes and has come across new challenges. Traditional methods for preservation have been backed by technological tools of enormous capacities, creating the impression of a constant "revolution". Most importantly, preservation has shifted from a passive stance (storage) to more active attitude (digitization, migration). However, the transition from the analogue past to the digital future is not smooth, as one would hope (or at least as libraries and their users would have hoped). The digital collection and preservation of on-line cultural and scientific assets was faced with legal instruments pertaining to "analogue age", such as the legal deposit and the traditional rules of copyright law, which in the digital age seem as inadequate tools for the effective preservation of cultural and scientific heritage and the securing of a wide access to that heritage. Recent and pending changes in the areas of legal deposit and Copyright law attempt to modernize the legislation, but as it is demonstrated, a lot more has to be done in that direction. This chapter presents an overview of the present situation, challenges and problems with a focus on European Community and International Law.

Archival and Museum Information as a Component of the Common Digital Space of Scientific Knowledge

2021

The Common Digital Space of Scientific Knowledge (CDSSK), in its modern interpretation, is a fundamentally new information environment that accumulates knowledge from various fields of science and is the basis for solving a wide range of problems: from artificial intelligence to the science popularization. One of the prototypes of the CDSSK model is the digital library "Scientific Heritage of Russia" (DL SHR), within which methods and means of integrating heterogeneous digital information (including archival and museum information) related to Russian scientific achievements are being developed. For several years, the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ARAN) and the V. I. Vernadsky State Geological Museum Russian Academy of Sciences (GGM RAS) participated in the development and in the DL SHR development and filling the DL SHR with digital content of the DL SHR. The paper discusses the metadata profiles adopted for displaying archival and museum objects in the CDSSK...

The necessary interdisciplinarity in the digital preservation

Daniel Flores presented the closing conference of the 4 th Seminar on Museum Information Services, about management, preservation and access of authentic digital documents in a chain of custody. The presentation displays in its title the entire density of the content shown. The presentation discussed the preservation of documents with legal, normative, archival and political aspects. Certainly the mission to maintain the authenticity, so important to the archival science, and the reliability in the digital heritage deserve the interdisciplinary approach promoted by the 4 th Seminar. At this point, it is important to resume the concept of Intradisciplinarity, which according to Luz and Francelin (2016), is where the several topics inside the field may be recombined, generating new knowledge with topics discussed in the very Information Science. I.e., we can use a number of resources from museology, archival science and library science to apply them in digital repositories. So, it is possible to identify in the own field a number of epistemological axioms applied by the areas supporting Dr. Flores' s presentation and that should be commented briefly below. As for the management, it was possible to check from both the scientific and normative points of view a number of resources available for the planning and practical application in repositories. The practice of the documentary management is obviously important in the process to maintain the digital chain of custody of archival documents. After all, the documentary beginning is where these documents are created and used, what can occur in a custody environment and with principles of trust and authenticity. If a current archive is treated, classified and evaluated as regards the temporality and with security measures, we will have a good handling of the chain of custody. After all, according to Flores (2016), the maintenance of the chain of custody should be made by means of authentic environments. The SIGAD – Sistema Informatizado de Gestão Arquivística de Documentos [Computer Systems for Ar-chival Management of Documents]-(set of requirements defined by the E-Arq Brasil standard) applicable in the current and intermediate stages of documentary management, and the RDC-Arq
