Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reveal Proficiency levels for areas of geography teacher candidates. The study was conducted with totally 252 prospective geography teachers from 4th and 5th grades of 4 different universities in the spring term of the 2010-2011 academic year. A scale for the readiness level of prospective geography teachers for their professional competences, which was developed by the researcher, was used in order to collect data. Analysis of the data obtained from the research, depending on factors such as the case of the independent variables to the dependent variable is a couple comparisons t-test for group comparisons and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), analysis of variables that fail to meet the assumptions of parametric test, Mann-Whitney which for couple comparisons and Kruskal-Wallis H test which group comparisons were used. To find the source of the difference between groups, Scheffe and Mann-Whitney U test was used. As a result of the study, it was determined that there are significant differences in the readiness level according to such variables as university, grade, living neighborhood, participation on the road again, to follow the geographical publications, academic grade of professional competences level of prospective geography teachers. However it was determined that such variables as student’s gender, types of the school of graduation do not affect professional competences level of prospective geography teachers. In the light of the data obtained in the study, proposals were put forward for the development of professional competences level of prospective geography teachers.
