On the Measurement of Success and Satisfaction 1

2012

The main purpose of the present paper is to disentangle the mix-up of the notions of success and satisfaction which is prevailing in the voting power literature. We demonstrate that both notions are conceptually distinct, and discuss their relationship and measurement. We show that satisfaction contains success as one component, and that both coincide under the canonical set-up of a simultaneous decision-making mechanism as it is predominant in the voting power literature. However, we provide two examples of sequential decision-making mechanisms in order to illustrate the difference between success and satisfaction. In the context of the discussion of both notions we also address their relationship to different types of luck.

Developments in satisfaction-research

1996

This paper reviews advances in the study of satisfaction in the context of Social Indicators Research. Five developments are considered:(1) changes in the conceptualization of satisfaction,(2) advances in the measurement of satisfaction,(3) growth of a significant body of comparative data on satisfaction,(4) the map of satisfaction that emerges from these developments,(5) resulting advances in understanding of the appraisal-process, and (6) developments in the use of the satisfaction concept in wider conceptions of welfare.

Chapter 10: How to choose good success measures

2021

Success measures mean very different things in different contexts. Almost always, this involves lifting our eyes from tracking progress, implementation and activity, to whether or not we are delivering the intended changes that motivate and justify an initiative, AND in a way in which we attribute changes to our intervention. You can never measure everything you'd like, nor as well as you'd like, so making good decisions about what to prioritise is important. This chapter provides a tool that prompts users to think about different types of indicators and measures, and the case studies illustrate how we've navigated these choices in different examples.

Satisfaction in 10 countries: summary of findings

1996

In line with earlier comparative research we found large differences in satisfaction across countries. Average satisfaction is highest in North-Western Europe and lowest in the East-European nations. The South-European nations score in between. This pattern is observed in average satisfaction with life-as-a-whole as well as in satisfaction with three life-domains (finances, housing, social contacts) with minimal exceptions.

Quality, satisfaction and behavioral intentions

2000

Performance quality was conceptualized as the attributes of a service which are controlled by a tourism supplier, while satisfaction referred to a tourist's emotional state after exposure to the opportunity. A structural equations model hypothesized that perceived performance quality would have a stronger total effect on behavioral intentions than satisfaction. This hypothesis was con®rmed. The analysis also indicated that the perceptions measure of quality ®tted the hypothesized model better than data derived from the subjective discon®rmation measure. Results suggested that evaluation efforts should include assessment of both performance quality and satisfaction, but since performance quality is under management's control it is likely to be the more useful measure.
