Elamic Paleography of the Achaemenid inscriptions in panel from Persepolis (BA Thesis)

A research work on analyzing the royal inscriptions in Persepolis panel in order to spot the differences from paleographic point of view of inscriptions and understand the reasons behind the adoption of a type of writing over another. The research has highlighted some interesting elements, in reference to the will of the stonecutters to use a style, much like a personal handwriting, which is different from that of others.

Tol-e Ajori: a Monumental Gate of the Early Achaemenian period in the Persepolis Area. The 2014 excavation season of the Iranian-Italian project ‘From Palace to Town’

Archäologische Mitteilungen aus Iran und Turan (AMIT), 2014

Thanks to the 2014 excavations campaign at Tol-e Ajori, Persepolis (Fars), the Iranian-Italian Joint Archaeological Mission has been able to acquire new information on this building, which can now be safely interpreted as a monumental Gate built on the plan model of the Neo-Babylonian Ishtar Gate of Babylon. The preliminary report presented here on the three trenches excavated in 2014 illustrates the archaeological evolution of the building, from construction to destruction, and provides evidence for a series of comprehensive remarks on its topographical context and function, as well as its still uncertain chronological position within the Early Achaemenid period. The study of the glazed brick decoration, while confirming imitation of the Ishtar Gate in iconography and technique, shows significant differences from the glazed bricks used in both Susa and Persepolis and offers a basis for characterization of the craftsmanship involved in their production.

A Middle Persian Inscription from Persepolis

IRANIAN JOURNAL OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL STUDIES 3 , 2013

This article deciphers and analyzes a previously unknown Sassanian mint location represented by the inscription WLČ., based on the analysis of a Middle Persian inscription found in Persepolis, and on the linguistic changes that occurred during the transition to modern Persian. Evidence is presented to show that this previously unknown Sassanian mint designation corresponds to the modern-day city of Borazjan in southwestern Iran. This is one of only a few cases in which the Sassanian recording of known towns is con rmed through archaeological evidence. Previous efforts to identify mint locations through abbreviated inscriptions and mint marks, have achieved good results. The linguistic analysis of of cial seals and inscriptions, in which the name of a city is either in the center (in abbreviated form) or along the rim (written in full), allows the identi cation of some mints.. This article presents a linguistic analysis of a previously unknown mint location designated WLČ. Based on a Middle Persian inscription found in Persepolis, and the linguistic changes that occurred during the transition to modern Persian, evidence indicates that WLČ designates the modern city of Borazjan.
