Physical perfection is one of the most solid imaginary of Brazil and it is currently represented in the form of cisgender white, thin, female bodies that occupy the beaches of the south zone of Rio de Janeiro. It was also an attribute of the brand Rio during the construction of “Olympic city”. This article aims to understand, through a critical analysis of four international television documentaries produced and exhibited by foreign televisions during the so-called “Olympic period”, how the bodies that are dissonant in relation to these imaginaries struggle over urban spaces, the right to the city and to narrate themselves, breaking with the official brand. Urban Space and Female Subjectivity in Contemporary Brazilian Literature
This paper explores the representation of urban space/city in female writing. In other words, my goal is to study the role of urban space/ city in the transgression of the patriarchal system, specifically regarding the roles traditionally assigned to women. My starting point will be the following two questions. First: can the city and urban experience promote the transgression of the rules of patriarchal society and help female characters to break with the past and gain agency? And, secondly, how are contemporary female writers conveying urban space in their fiction? I intend to employ theoretical concepts that deal with the characterization of the urban space/city, such as metropolis and megalopolis. I'm using the category of space here in a culturalist perspective, which defines space as a representational category intimately intertwined with social and psychological dimensions. Thus understood, space is not an immobile surface but an ongoing sphere where several human trajectories coexist and the social is constructed (Massey 2005). Survival Arts: Peripheral Urban Cultures in the City of Rio de Janeiro

Brazilian favelas and peripheries are constantly threatened by the state, from the promotion of extreme precariousness to outright extermination. Yet, the working class therein, especially the young and mostly black, continue to turn everyday life into language so as to account for their world, survive and dream. Drawing on fieldwork as well as on the writings of Jacques Derrida and Homi Bhabha, we arrive at the notion ofsurvival arts, which we use as a descriptor for their artistic production. Through descriptions of funk carioca and xarpi we analyse how survival arts can defy the logic of the commodity-city and present dreams of possible futures.
Mega-events constitute crucial happenings in the life of a host city. Rio de Janeiro was chosen for 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics, the last ones of a long series. This research, conducted during the interval between the two happenings, questioned their alleged ‘legacy’ by instead investigating the negative impacts, hereby conceptualised as ‘footprints’. How are mega-events leaving a footprint, affecting Maré – a set of favelas in Rio de Janeiro’s North Zone – and its artists’ activities and ways of resistance? This research made a case of critically contrasting the geography of globalisation and capital (Harvey, Sassen) with the bio-political and state of exception theories (Klein, Agamben), in order to localise the magnitude of mega-events, global trends, media and aesthetics disputes (Jaguaribe, Rancière) in the daily lives of contextually adverse favelas. Indeed, while the position of favelados (favela residents) might be seen as disconnected or threatened – e.g. by crimilitarisation (militarisation of repression coupled with criminalisation of poverty and social movements), pacification and gentrification – it also revealed the rise of transversal and overlapping networks – e.g. organisations and collectives positioning themselves as resistance in the dynamics of oppression. Mega-events were therefore the stage of this inquiry into the interplays of Rio and its favelas, reflected in the case-study of Maré, which was also framed in the context of South Zone real estate speculation, and North Zone military occupations. Mega-event footprints and resistance were thus explored looking at Maré artists. Specifically, Imagens do Povo photographers showed in words and pictures their vocation for the empathetic portrayal of daily life over shocking, stigmatising depictions of favelas. Lastly, this case-study reflected upon the wrestled control over favelas, questioning the future of urbanisation and pacification plans, and the favelados fights for rights, trusting in Imagens do Povo (Images of the People) as a sign of hope and resistance. ‘Vida pulsante’ (pulsating life) is therefore a dedication to the quotidian sprightliness of life in favelas.
The City Animated by the Spirit of Patriarchy

This chapter explores gendered inequalities in the southern Brazilian city of Florianópolis through a focus on the role played by the materiality of the city in the imposition of patriarchal power. Building on the extensive literature on gendered urban inequality it draws on ethnographic fieldwork to consider the affective impact of the design and construction of the material city, and the ways in which this contributes to gendered inequality through what is theorized as the animation of the city by the 'spirit of patriarchy'. The concept of animism as deployed here provides a novel way of considering theories of affect and haunting which stresses simultaneously the deep historical roots of patriarchal power and its contemporary quotidian impact, complimenting and adding to approaches to urban gendered inequality which focus on practice and materiality. Ultimately it is argued that if we are to understand the inequalities encountered by women in cities we must take seriously the material city as a producer of affect, and the impact of this on the construction and maintenance of patriarchal power.
Space and Relationality in Rio's Favelas: Asfalto and Comunidade
In this paper, I offer reflections on contemporary popular culture in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to consider a common metaphor in everyday parlance that pits the objectifying formally urbanized city, called "asphalt," against the informal "communities" of its favelas. With nods to Paul Gilroy's understanding of the Black Atlantic world, Martin Buber's philosophy of dialogue and psychiatric theories of attachment, I explore this contrasting word pairing to locate both a critique of conventional Eurocentric rationalist notions of space, time, knowledge, being and power and an affirmation of an alternative, Afro-Atlantic relational impulse regarding those same categories.
The aesthetic look of affect: reterritorializing Rio de Janeiro

Resumo Este artigo busca apresentar o olhar estético do afeto como possibilidade para sensibilizar e reprogramar a percepção social no Rio de Janeiro a partir do olhar da Favela. Uma técnica para “fazer ver”, “transformar o ver em olhar” e “fazer agir sobre” através da experiência fotográfica. Uma alternativa para reimaginar a cidade sob outra perspectiva e poder reconfigurar a imagem do Rio de Janeiro e suas relações a partir da virtualização e projeção das imagens fotográficas produzidas na favela, ou seja, um recurso para reterritorializar a cidade. Uma proposta construída a partir do conceito de desterritorialização de Pierre Lévy e na teoria de imagem complexa de Josep Català Domènech, tendo como referência metodológica a Fenomenologia da percepção , de Maurice Merleau-Ponty.
