Rural modernisation through intensive vegetable farming agribusiness in Indonesia
Rural Society, 2020
Traditional farming that changes to profitable agribusiness can serve a machine for rural modernisation. This article assesses factors that determined the decision of smallholder vegetable producers to participate in vegetable-based agribusiness and analyses the impact of agribusiness participation and other determinants on the economic returns. Structural equation modelling was employed to show a proposed model of cumulative causation theory. Data were compiled from a quantitative survey of 357 selected farm households located in major vegetable-producing areas of Bali and Java, Indonesia. Results show that human capital and household endowment motivated farmers to participate in vegetable-based agribusiness. Women's participation significantly contributed to agribusiness participation and agribusiness participation led to income generation. Opportunities exist to expand vegetable-based agribusiness and increase farmers' income by providing adequate access to transportation infrastructure, an advantageous agribusiness environment, and investing in human capital through training and extension services.

This study aims to measure and analyzes the level of agricultural sustainability at the household level using the results of the Integrated Agricultural Survey (AGRIS) pilot conducted by Statistics Indonesia in 2020. Applying descriptive analysis on the computation results of eleven sub-indicators of the SDGs 2.4.1 indicator at the household level, we analyzed the proportion of agricultural households categorized as sustainable and unsustainable for each corresponding sub-indicator of sustainability. We also estimated the average land area managed by agricultural households for each category in each sub-indicators. We found that most agricultural households in West Java, East Java and West Nusa Tenggara are categorized as unsustainable in agricultural practices regarding land productivity. The proportion of households practising unsustainable agriculture are also quite large regarding fertilizer use and decent employment. We also found that less land productivity and poor management...
Farmers ’ Responses to Vegetable Production Technology in East Java , Indonesia
This study assesses farmers’ perception on technology production on chili and tomato in East Java. Chilli and tomato were the main vegetable commodity in East Java. The assessment was done by survey at across 12 different project sites during September December 2014. The survey uses structured questionnaires on 250 farmers. For this purpose, the study uses “before and after” assessment framework. The results indicate that technology has very favourably increased vegetable farming capability and knowledgebase of the farmers. Farmers reported that they could increase yield with reduced uses of chemicals and other inputs. They reported very positive impacts of technology on all of the farmers’ association. Farmers’ knowledge on plant protection and soil fertility improvement increased significantly. In conclusion, technology has been successfully delivered to improve knowledge and skill on chilli and tomato farming, and vegetable production in general. Besides, the process of technolog...

Poverty is still an insistent problem which when confronted by humanity requires a systemic, comprehensive and synchronized approach to alleviate it. The concentration of urban and rural poverty in developing countries underpins the importance of agriculture as a poverty reduction strategy since most of the poor people depend on agriculture. Thus, improving agricultural productivity, competitiveness and sustainability may reduce poverty. This study was intended to (1) find out if sustainable agriculture, i.e., horticultural organic farming practices, could contribute to poverty reduction, (2) identify restrictive factors affecting horticulture organic farming development, and (3) formulate alternative policy intervention for poverty alleviation based on development of organic farming. The respondents were selected using purposive sampling method, comprising of 22 selfclaimed horticultural organic farmers and 22 horticultural conventional farmers. The data were gathered through a structuredquestionnaire and in-depth interview. Descriptive statistics, prospective analyses and analytical hierarchy process were used to analyze the data. The results showed that organic farming practices have potential to increase income of the horticultural farmers. Factors that constrained the development of horticultural organic farming were limited knowledge of organic practices, access to market, financial and risk management services or support. Alternative policy interventions, such as developing a linkage between producers and consumers, strengthening research and development on organic farming, enhancing dissemination knowledge of organic farming practices, and providing access to financial and agriculture management, are proposed.
Farming Practices of Vegetables: A Comparative Study in Four Regions of East Java and Bali Provinces
AGRARIS: Journal of Agribusiness and Rural Development Research
Agronomic and ecological aspects play important roles in vegetable production, because the aspects will be used for determining suitable interventions. This study aims to provide current farmers' practices of vegetable production, particularly for agronomic and ecological aspects of chilli and tomato in four regions of East Java and Bali. This study uses of analytical tool of descriptive approach by comparing and contrasting each production practices across regions. Data were compiled from a field survey of 360 farmers during 2013-2014. Results of analysis were presented in graphical and tabular forms. Farmers mostly selected hybrid varieties of vegetables because of economic reasons, such as high yield, good appearance and high number of fruits. Anthracnose and late blight were perceived as the most important disease in chilli and tomato respectively. Farmers controlled pests and diseases using pesticides. In general, farmers perceived that irrigation was one of limiting factors of vegetable farming. Poor drainage was one of the crucial issues in Bali. Farmers mostly sold vegetable once harvested. Post-harvest handling was still traditional, where farmers still less pay attention on post-harvest, even though they observed the economic advantage of post-harvest. Based on the existing practices, a special extension on vegetable production needs to be formulated appropriately, based on the specific characteristics of each region.

The importance of adopting Sustainable Agricultural Practices (SAPs) approach to improve food production cannot be overemphasized in policy development and research agenda of many countries in sub-Saharan Africa. This study investigates how socio-demographic factors influence farm-level decision process associated with the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices among smallholder farmers in Ogun State. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 196 farmers. Primary data were collected with the aid of structured questionnaires. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Likert scale rating and multivariate probit model. The results showed that majority of the farmers were male with mean age of 35 years cultivating an average farm size of 5.8 hectares. The use of improved variety was adopted by 95.41% and this was rank first among the practices adopted by the farmers. Agroforestry was rank second and adopted by 85.71% of the respondents. The extent ...
The study was conducted at Dodoma Municipal district in Dodoma region. The general objective of this study was to determine factors contributing to agricultural productivity in smallholder farmers , with a particular focus to selected three wards of Hombolo, Makutupora and Msalato in Dodoma municipality the capital city of the United Republic of Tanzania. Effect of Socio-Economic on Farmers' Decisions in Using Lowland Rice Production Inputs in Indonesia
International Journal of Sustainable Development and Planning, 2022
In Indonesia, rice was produced by small-scale farmers where yields were still generally low. This was because small-scale farmers still used poor quality seeds and unbalanced fertilizers. Therefore, this research aimed to analyze the socio-economic factors that affected the adoption of quality seeds in lowland rice farming and the use of fertilizers on quality seeds. This research used a double-hurdle model to answer the objectives of research and used 329 farmings which were selected randomly in Central Sulawesi Indonesia. The results show that the gender variable only affected the use of fertilizer on quality seeds. Education, access to credit, sources of income (income diversification), access to extension, meetings with farmer groups were found to be positively correlated with the decision to adopt quality seeds in lowland rice farming and use of fertilizers to quality seeds, while the number of dependents of the household head was negatively correlated. The land area of lowlan...
