Abstract

INTRODUCTION SUPERFICIALLY, the reasons for doing research into drugs education seem clear enough: such inquiry is necessary to learn best how to inform and prevent individuals from becoming involved in the misuse of drugs. However , this purpose reflects a series of assumptions which need to be examined in detail, if we are to understand better the relationships young people establish with drugs as the social processes they are. It is vital that w e do this, to avoid accepting some definitions of drug users that have found their w a y into contemporary legisla tion without question. T h e matter of young people and drugs cannot be adequately understood if its broader social and cultural context are neglected, since these factors have considerable influence in creating and maintaining patterns of drug involvement.
