A Sociolinguistics Study on Language Attitude of the Sundanese Community in Eastern Priangan Towards English as a Foreign Language in Indonesia

A research of language attitude is getting much attention for years in some fields. Due to the importance of the language attitude, this research intends to describe the language attitude of Sundanese towards English language in Eastern Priangan, West Java Province. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research. The data used is the data obtained through questioners, observations, and in-depth interviews to know the attitude of the Sundanese community language. Respondents which were involved in the research are respondents living in Eastern Priangan, such as Ciamis, Banjar, Tasikmalaya city, Tasikmalaya regency, Sumedang, Garut, and Pangandaran. This research took a social situation. The result of the research shows that Sundanese people in Eastern Priangan have different language attitude, in terms of cognitive, behavioural, and affective aspects towards English as a foreign language. Attitude towards Javanese Language: A Case Study of English Department Students in Brawijaya University, Indonesia

This study aims to scrutinize the attitude of Javanese youth towards their use of local language. There are two research questions proposed in this study such as namely: 1) how is the attitude of Javanese youth towards their local language, 2) what are the factors that effect on their attitudes. The objectives of this study are to define the attitude of Javanese youth towards their local language and to discover why they are behaving so. Furthermore, this study adopted qualitative method applying descriptive analysis and selected the students of English Department of Batch 2014 Batch in Brawijaya University as the participants. Comparing Students' Attitudes towards English Language in an Indonesian State High School, 2015

This article reports a study of high school students’ attitudes in Indonesia towards English as a foreign language. The attitudes in this study particularly was appertained to the students’ interest towards learning English as a language; their motivation to master it; their difficulty in learning English grammar; and also the importance of English for their future. Students from two different classes i.e. science class and social class were involved in this study. A questionnaire was administered to 72 students, n = 40 from science class and n = 32 from social class. It was found that the students’ interest of both classes in learning English was not statistically different. They consider that learning English is quite interesting for the students in both classes. Meanwhile in the matter of their motivation, difficulty in learning English grammar, and also their consideration in viewing the importance of English, the results show statistically significant differences between the students in both classes.

The Attitude of Indonesian Senior High School Students towards Learning English

This study aims at investigating the senior high school students’ attitudes toward learning English. Therefore, a Mix-method was applied to this study in which quantitative data were collected by using questionnaire and qualitative data were collected through semi structured interview. Furthermore, 21 female and 15 male students were randomly selected based on the class's free time as the sample of this study. As results, the findings demonstrate that the students at the senior high school have a positive attitude toward learning English and the English language. Three factors shape the attitude: cognitive, affective, and behavioral. The students demonstrate a positive attitude by saying positive words about English and how they feel about English.

Language attitude towards English and Javanese by young people in Surabaya

ABSTRACT Attitude to language is a construct that explains linguistic behavior in particular. It may be positive or negative as well as instrumental or integrative. It varies from favorably to unfavorably or vice-versa in language learning and acquisition, choice and use of language in different domains and hence, it is necessary in the question of survival and development of a particular language and in the chances of success in language policy implementation. The study aims to find out the young people’s attitude towards English and Javanese and their reasons to have such attitude. The study belongs to descriptive qualitative research. The data are collected by questionnaires, interviews, and observation. According to Lambert, attitudes consist of three components: the cognitive, affective and conative components. The theory is supported by Gardner who considered attitudes as components of motivation in language learning. According to him, “motivation ... refers to the combination of effort plus desire to achieve the goal of learning the language plus favorable attitudes toward learning the language”. The research shows that the respondents use Javanese because it is a tradition that is needed in social intercourse in a particular society and use English as the foreign language in their daily conversation. Regarding to the respondent’s attitudes, the findings suggest that people have positive attitude towards English and Javanese. This is attributed to the fact that respondents are instrumentally motivated to learn towards both languages. Keywords: atittude, components, motivation

Attitudes and Behavior of Indonesian Language and Literatur Education Study Program Students of Universities in Makassar Towards Indonesian language

This research applied a mixed methods design aiming to explore, describe and explain attitudes and behavior of Indonesian language and literature education study program students of universities in Makassar towards Indonesian language. The data on language attitudes and behavior was collected using a test technique in the form of questionnaires for attitudes and covert behavior, and a non-test technique taken from recording, notes and interviews for overt language behavior of the students. This research highlights the language attitudes of Indonesian language teachers and lecturers in Banda Aceh city toward their own mother tongue, the Acehnese language. This paper aimed to figure out the attitudes of teachers as native speakers of the Acehnese language and their language of preference in the educational context. The language attitude of Islamic boarding school students toward English

Language attitude study has proven to reveal students' success and failure in learning language. Attitude is not innate, but learned. Students learn to grow and improve their positive language attitudes towards foreign languages through certain programs at schools. The aim of this research is to investigate the language attitude of students in an Indonesian Islamic boarding school towards English as a foreign Language and to describe why they have the attitude. The respondents were 49 students of 2 nd grade of senior high school classes from HAC (High-Achieving Class) and LAC (Low-Achieving Class). The design of this research was mixed method using explanatory sequential design. To obtain the data, the instrument used was a questionnaire consisting of cognitive, affective and conative components of language attitudes. Interview was carried out to acquire the reason the students had the attitudes. The finding was both HAC and LAC students' language attitudes were mostly positive (91.83%) in cognitive, affective and conative language attitudes. Some (8.17%) had different language attitudes. They showed positive language attitudes, but acquired low scores and showed negative language attitudes, but acquired high scores. The interview revealed this phenomenon.

Language Attitudes Among College-Students Toward English in Stai-JM Tanjung Pura

This study deals with language attitudes among college students in STAI JM TanjungPura toward English. It was aimed in investigating the types of the attitudes among the college-students, the levels of attitudes by the college-students at STAI-JM Tanjung Pura towards English realized and the reason or the factors why do they have the attitude such the way it is. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of this research were the college-students from Islamic Economics Major (Ekonomi Islam) for second semester in STAI-JM Tanjung Pura. The objects of this study were the language attitudes of the collegestudents in STAI-JM Tanjung Pura towards English. The data were analysed by applying Interactive models techniques by Miles, Huberman& Saldana analysis. Based on the data analysis, the college-students in STAI-JM Tanjung Pura showed positive attitudes towards English. Then the college-students had positive attitude towards English in the level of receiving, valuing, and organizing values. On the other hand the college-students had negative attitude towards English in the level of responding and internalizing values. The college-students had positive attitude towards English because they are proud of using English and they were aware of English language norms. But on the other hand they were not loyal to use English in their daily interaction in the class.

Language Attitude toward Vernacular Language Use: A Case of Jakarta

Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia that has multilingual community. Even though Jakarta is multiethnic, the use of Bahasa Indonesia has the dominant role as a national and official language. Mostly, Jakarta inhabitants use it even they have their vernacular language. That condition emerges the question on the vernacular language use in Jakarta. Considering from 746 vernacular languages in Indonesia, 296 suspected disappeared or in endangered state. It was required to investigate the language attitude across three generations of Jakarta inhabitants towards vernacular language use. This study applied qualitative approach with in-depth interview, observation and questionnaire from fifteen participants consisted of parents as the first generation, children as the second generation and grandchildren as the third generation. The study gave the deep understanding on three generation language attitudes toward their language vernacular use in their daily life in Jakarta context.
