A new bibliometric approach to assess the scientific specialization of regions
Research Evaluation, 2014
The objective of the current work is to identify the territorial scientific specializations present in Italy, at the levels of regions and provinces (NUTS2 and NUTS3). To do this, we take a bibliometric approach based on the scientific production of the entire public research system in the hard sciences sphere, for the five years 2006-2010. In particular, we apply a new index of scientific specialization (Scientific Specialization Index, SSI) that takes account of both the quantity and quality of scientific production achieved by the research institutions of a given territory.
A methodology to compute the territorial productivity of scientists: The case of Italy
Journal of Informetrics, 2015
Policy-makers working at the national and regional levels could find the territorial mapping of research productivity by field to be useful in informing both research and industrial policy. Research-based private companies could also use such mapping for efficient selection in localizing R&D activities and university research collaborations. In this work we apply a bibliometric methodology for ranking by research productivity: i) the fields of research for each territory (region and province); and ii) the territories for each scientific field. The analysis is based on the 2008-2012 scientific output indexed in the Web of Science, by all professors on staff at Italian universities. The population is over 36,000 professors, active in 192 fields and 9 disciplines.
Urban Studies, 1999
This paper presents the first analysis of scientific strength by output (papers in the Science Citation Index 1994-96) produced by authors from the 'greater' urban regions of Europe. Top lists of European centres are indicated. Four agglomerations constitute the European super-league of science: London, Paris, Moscow and the Dutch urban agglomeration of Amsterdam, the Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht. The next layer could be named the primary league and comprises 19 large research centres. A third group of 16 cities forms a secondary league of 16 smaller research centres. These upper-level research strongholds are categorised in the paper where patterns of specialisations by absolute and relative distribution of research disciplines for each city are identified and families of cities by research pattern are analysed and compared within the perspective of urban economic growth and change.
A novel methodology to assess the scientific standing of nations at field level
Journal of Informetrics, 2020
The formulation of national research policies would benefit greatly from reliable strategic analysis of the scientific infrastructure, aimed at identifying the relevant strengths and weaknesses at field level. Bibliometric methodologies thus far proposed in the literature are not completely satisfactory. This work proposes a novel "output-to-input-oriented" approach, which permits identification of research strengths and weaknesses on the basis of the ratios of top scientists and highly cited articles to research expenditures in each field. The proposed approach is applied to the Italian academic system. 2012-2016 scientific publications are analyzed, in the 218 research fields where bibliometric assessment is appropriate.

We analyse research collaboration in the Italian biotech innovation system using bibliometric data. We build a database of all scientific publications of Italian biotechnology firms over the period 1990 to 2006 and we provide evidence both on the institutional and geographical nature of research networks and on the determinants of research quality (measured by citations). We find that collaboration increases the quality of research. However, there are decreasing returns to collaboration (the number of authors has a positive impact up to a point), collaboration with foreign institutions always has a positive impact, whatever the kind of institution, as has the diversity of institutions (in terms of type but not in geographical terms).
Growth Analysis of Global Scientific Research on Covid-19 Pandemic: A Scientometrics Analysis
Library Philosophy and Practice, 2020
The purpose of present study is to evaluate the growth of scientific literature pertaining to Coronavirus disease 2019(Covid-19). In sum 1630 document published during 01 January 2020 to 6 April, 2020. Publication data were retrieved from SCOPUS databases using key terms and detailed analysis were made to understand the publication trends, authorship and collaborative pattern, country-wise distribution, core journal and most leading institutes. Study found that 82.88% (1351) of the research documents published on open-access platform which signify the rapid communication of research finding among global scientific communities. 'BMJ Clinical Research Ed' found to be most productive journal with 114(6.99%) research articles. China & USA dominates in the publishing research output of 515(31.60%) and 308(18.90%) respectively. There has been an unparalleled growth in the number of publications across the globe on COVID-19 since January 2020.
Scientometrics, 2011
The study presents a time-series analysis of field-standardized average impact of Italian research compared to the world average. The approach is purely bibliometric, based on census of the full scientific production from all Italian public research organizations active in 2001-2006 (hard sciences only). The analysis is conducted both at sectorial level (aggregated, by scientific discipline and for single fields within disciplines) and at organizational level (by type of organization and for single organizations). The essence of the methodology should be replicable in all other national contexts. Its offers support to policy-makers and administrators for strategic analysis aimed at identifying strengths and weaknesses of national research systems and institutions.
The impact of COVID-19 on infodemic research: a bibliometric analysis of global publications
infodemic research, 2024
Purpose-Objective is to investigate the effects of COVID-19 on the performance and productivity of infodemic research. A comprehensive bibliometric analysis is conducted using data extracted from Thomson Reuters' Web of Science, and the analysis is facilitated by the bibliometrix and biblioshiny tools. Design/methodology/approach-Data was extracted from the Web of Science (WoS) database provided by Thomson Reuters. Therefore, literature published outside of the WoS database was not included. Results were extracted about the Document Type, Research Area, Language, Publication year, and country or countries for all authors because this study was interested in scholarly international collaboration. The researcher also used the Thomson Reuters Web of Science's InCites Essential Science Indicators database, which allowed the researcher to measure the scientific output performance of countries over a period of time. In addition to InCites data, citation data and international collaboration for all countries were also downloaded. Findings-Inclusion and exclusion criteriax: this study focused on literature published by authors identified by each author's affiliation in each publication. Thus, the WoS topic field was searched by "infodemic" or "information epidemic" or "info ebidemic". The time span selected for this study started from 2018 to 2022, allowing the researcher to survey the nature of the literature during the last 6 years before COVID-19 and 4 years after COVID-19 to identify the effects of COVID-19 on research in the world regarding both performance and productivity. The study included various types of materials, such as articles, early access, and review articles. Originality/value-A comprehensive bibliometric analysis is conducted using data extracted from Thomson Reuters' Web of Science, and the analysis is facilitated by the bibliometrix and biblioshiny tools. The findings reveal that prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, researchers contributed a total of 3,960 documents, with the United States leading with 2,933 publications, followed by China with 2,561. However, the production of infodemic research doubled following the onset of the pandemic, resulting in a total of 6,979 documents. Both before and after COVID-19.

Evaluating research performance of Coronavirus and Covid-19 pandemic using scientometric indicators
Online Information Review, 2020
PurposeThis study is an attempt to evaluating the growth of scientific literature in the domain of coronavirus and Covid-19 pandemic research based on scientometric indicators: prolific countries and relative citation impact (RCI); influential institutions; author analysis and network, h-index and citation; DC (degree of collaboration), CC (collaboration coefficient), MCI (modified collaboration index) in the subject domain of coronavirus and Covid-19 research.Design/methodology/approachThe authors adopted approaches to obtain the literature data from Scopus database from 2000 to 2020 by conducting a systematic search using keywords related to the studied subject domain. In total, 15,297 numbers of records were considered for the literature analysis considering the real significant growth of this subject domain. This study presented the scientometric analysis of these publications. Furthermore, statistical correlations have been used to understand the collaboration pattern. Visualiz...
