Development of "dark" tourism in the contemporary society

The paper focuses on the development of "dark" tourism as a type of special interest tourism. The study included analysis of the definition of "dark" tourism, tourist motivations for this type of tourism, Stone' s typology of dark destination offers, and a portion is devoted to the role of "dark" tourism in contemporary society. Also there are important "dark" tourism destinations in the world as an example of this type of tourism development. The work includes a reference to the promotion of dark tourism in Romania, as a destination that has largely failed to impose itself on the world tourism market because this form of tourism promotion. In the first part special attention is paid to the special interest tourism, which is a new development that drives modern society. Modern tourists have a different kind of motivation when they are planning travel and tour operators need to focus on current trends. One of the trends relating to the development of "dark" tourism and some of the countries at the national level is positioned as a destination which are distinguished by this kind of tourism. There is the space for this type of tourism development, but they require specific solutions that are distinctive to each country.

This research finds the economic impact of dark tourism, focusing on destinations associated with tragedy, death, and suffering. Contrary to conventional beliefs surrounding positive destination n branding, this study questions whether dark tourism can emerge as economically impactful tourist destinations. Employing a quantitative approach based on Multi Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA), the research aims to analyze factors and options defining the profitability and sustainability of such destinations. The case study of Amritsar, particularly the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919, serves as a poignant example to understand the economic dynamics of dark tourism. The research encourages a reevaluation of public perception and policymaking regarding dark tourism, offering a nuanced understanding of its economic implications. Ultimately, this study enriches our comprehension of the complex phenomenon of dark tourism, providing a foundation for further research and informed decision-making in the tourism industry.

People's perception on dark tourism: a quantitative exploration

The aim of this paper is to find out the perceptions of Indian Citizens about dark tourism in Indian context. Dark tourism is slowly getting attention among tourists in India. Here, cluster sampling method was applied and the total sample size was 396 respondents. We took help from the primary and secondary data here. The analysis is being undertaken with the help of Logistic Regression Technique applying SPSS Software. Logistic Regression technique can only be applied if the dependent variable is categorical in nature and independent variables can be either continuous or categorical. Hence, we applied binomial logistic regression technique to analyse the data. The findings could be useful for the marketers to develop service-related strategy formulations for the tourists.

Dark tourism attractions and sites are gaining increasing attention, whereas dark tourism is considered one of the relatively recent and growing trends in the turbulent tourism market. Along with providing a theoretical framework, this paper aims to explore the tourism market of dark tourism and the motives of tourist demand. The perspectives of the population of the Republic of Croatia on dark tourism as a concept as well as the offer side of dark tourism are presented. These findings will be useful in designing and improving this kind of tourist offer, which also represents the main purpose of this paper. The research instrument was an original questionnaire. The main hypothesis of research refers to insufficient tourists' awareness of their participation in dark tourism, which was confirmed by the carried research. The new frontier of research refers to their propensity of visit in case they would be aware of the tragic history related to a site; namely if they knew a site they visited previously is classified as a dark tourism site-would they still have chosen to visit it?

Destinations create regional differences in the marketing field in order to gain competitive advantage and sustainability amongst rival destinations. The developments of the new marketing strategies for attracting tourist lead the differences among destinations. Furthermore, recently it is observed that depending on the demand for tourism there has been diversity in tourism habits. Thus, types of special interest tourism have occurred due to newly emerged different demands, habits, and interests. One of the types of this special interest tourism is dark tourism. Dark tourism is a type of special interest tourism which is associated with feelings death, pain, grief, and so on. The main purpose of the paper is to explain the concept of dark tourism and to increase the awareness for special interest tourism by highlighting tourism destinations having the potential of dark tourism in Turkey. In this paper, the importance of recently developing a concept of dark tourism has been emphasized and various suggestions have been made for future studies on the subject by giving place to the dark tourism destinations having the most tourist potential in Turkey.
