Anthropometric characterization of spleen in children

Purpose This paper aims to characterize the 3D geometry of the child spleen which is still unknown. Methods An anthropological measurement protocol, based upon 3D modeling using spleen-computed tomography data, was set up. Characteristic measurements were deWned to allow dimensions and spatial localization description from classical anatomical landmarks (11th dorsal vertebra and 10th left rib). Results Growth patterns showed a global enlargement without signiWcant changes in distance to anatomical bone points. Conclusions This preliminary study describes a validated measurement protocol based on 3D reconstructions and gives description of the child spleen during growth.
Quantitative analysis of morphometric variations of human spleen - A cadaveric study

The spleen is a largest collection of lymphoid tissue with diverse hemopoietic and phagocytic function. Recent experimental data have clearly defined immunological functions of spleen in innate and adaptive immunity, as a frontline of host defense against various infections. A comprehensive knowledge of splenic anatomical variations and morphometric dimensions is crucial in deciphering the role of spleen in health & infirmity. Aim: The aim of the study is to perform detailed morphometric analysis human splenic specimens with relation to age & gender differences and compare the findings with earlier studies. Materials and Methods: The present study included 40 cadaveric spleen and morphometric features i.e., length, breadth, width and weight of spleen were measured. Results: The average splenic weight observed was 178.5 gm and range was 100 to 300 gm. The average length, breadth and width of spleen were 11.9 cm, 7.33 cm and 3.4 cm respectively. The average splenic volume in the present study was 167.27 cc. There was a significant increase in splenic volume till 40-49 years followed by steady decline. Conclusion: The awareness of the morphology and dimensions of the spleen is of fundamental importance to the hematologists, clinicians, radiologists, prosectors and surgeons while performing surgical procedures on spleen.

Thirty-two morphologically normal spleens from adult corpses were excised and immersed into a graduated water tank and the water volume displaced was considered as the actual spleen volume. After that, the splenic maximal height, width, and breadth were determined by a pachimeter. All the reference points were marked with a metal clip. Utilizing the metal clip references ultrasound maximal height, width, and breadth were determined. It was assumed that the ultrasound spleen volume was the result of the multiplication of the three ultrasonographic measurements previously obtained.

Introduction: Spleen is an important secondary lymphoid organ. Now a day's its immunological and haematological role in the body are well realised which enhances the clinical importance of spleen. As spleen shows a wide range of morphological variations in routine dissection classes for under graduate students warranted an understanding of splenic morphometry. The aim of the study is to find out different morphological variations of spleen in the population of Odisha with its clinical significances and comparison of the results with previous studies. Material and Methods: In the present study 50 human cadaveric spleens were taken. The shapes, poles, surfaces and borders of the spleen were observed. The Morphological features like length, breadth and width were measured by verniers calliper and weight of the spleen was being measured by electronic weighing balance. Results: In the present study morphological variations were observed. The mean length of the spleen was 11.86cmranges from 8cm to 14 cm, the breadths of the spleen varied from 4cm to 10cm with an average breadth of 7.32cm and the width of the spleen vary from 2cm to 4.5cm with mean of 3.07cm.The weight of the spleen shows a wide range of variations ranging from 25grms to 300grms with an average weight of 106.65grms. Out of 50 spleens (52%) were wedge shaped followed by tetrahedral (24%) triangular (10%), oval (8%) and irregular (2%). Conclusions: A clear concept about the morphological variations of the spleen are very useful to the physician, surgeons and the radiologists to compare and rule out the pathological conditions involved in various diseases of spleen.

ABSTRACT The spleen is vital lymphatic organ in the human body which located in the left hypochondrial region. Currently, its anatomical variation with immunological and hematological functions for its clinical significance gets attention. The aim of this study was to assess the anatomical variation of spleen in an adult human cadaver. Methods: This study was conducted in 21 apparently normal adult male of unknown age human cadaveric spleens. institutional based observational descriptive study design was applied to assess the morphometric values of the spleen like its length, breadth, width and weight and the morphologic features like the shape, notches, borders, surfaces and impressions on the spleens were observed in all formalin fixed cadavers in selected university medical school of Ethiopian. Result: Out of 21 spleen samples various shapes of the spleens with triangular shaped 8 (38.10%), wedge shaped 5 (23.81%), tetrahedral shaped 3 (14.29%), oval shaped 4 (19.04%) and kidney shaped 1 (4.76 %) of the spleens were observed .The lengths of the spleens varied between 9.7 cm to 13.7 cm, with an average of 11.2 cm. Their breadth was between 3.5 and 9.5 cm with an average breadth of 6.6 cm. Their widths varied between 2.3 and 7.3 cm with an average of 5.0 cm. The weights of the spleens showed great variations, ranging between 45.72 and 331.41 gm, with an average of 147.76 gm. Out of 21 spleen samples,18 (85.71%) of spleens had the hilar length varies from 4-8 cm with an average of 4.5 cm. The splenic notches were present on the superior, intermediate and inferior borders. However, accessory spleens were not found at the hilum of the spleen. The knowledge on the anatomical variations of the spleen is of fundamental importance to the clinicians during the routine clinical examinations of the abdomen. INTRODUCTION Spleen is organ of lymphatic system located on left side of abdominal cavity under diaphragm. It is a secondary lymphatic organ that plays an important role in cell mediated immunity. Foetal spleen is erythropoietic in nature. MATERIAL & METHODS Present study was done in 50 adult spleens and 50 foetal spleens. RESULTS Morphometric features like length, breadth, thickness & weight are measured. Length varied from 6.3 to 12.5 cm, breadth varied from 2.6 to 8.6 cm, thickness ranged from 2 cm to 4.6 cm, weight ranged from 65 g to 225 g. Average total length of spleen is 2.52 cm x 1.76 x 2 cm, weight 6.5 g. Shapes of spleens observed wedge shape spleen-48%, tetrahedral spleen-24%, triangular spleen-28%. Splenic notches on superior border & inferior border are observed. Incident of accessory spleen in 1% of cases.
