The Impact of Online Communication on Learning English: A Case Study of Saudi EFL Learners
This study examined the perceptions and views of Saudi undergraduate EFL learners regarding the role of online communication in improving their English, including the basic skills and the other aspects of language learning. It also aimed to identify the impact of some factors on the learners' perceptions on the role of online communication in developing their English level. This study is quantitatively designed in which a written questionnaire was used to collect the data of the study during the first semester of the academic year 2015-2016 from 171 randomly selected students who joined different levels in English Department, College of Sciences and Arts, University of Bisha, Saudi Arabia. For analyzing the data of the study, different statistical techniques in Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), 21.0 version were ran. The results indicated that the students had high positive perceptions of the significant role of online communication in fostering their English. Furthermore, it was found that there were statistically significant differences in the online communication scores for the factors of foreign friendship, university level, and the frequent use of the Internet. On the contrary, the results revealed that there were no statistically significant differences in the online communication scores for the other two factors of age and the frequent use of English online. Students are invited more than ever before to grasp every online chance for developing their English. In particular, they are required to employ online communication not only for socialization purposes, but for using it as an educational tool as well. It is an indisputable fact that the frequent use of the Internet has crept into our everyday life in which we live in a rapidly changing communication setting. Actually, in addition to the classroom learning, there are other valuable opportunities for learning English such as face-to-face communication in non-learning contexts and online learning including social networking. To the best of the researcher's knowledge, these useful opportunities have not been appreciated enough and not given much attention in learning English in Saudi Arabia and hence deserve to be researched. The present study, therefore, tried to fill this gap. Precisely, it aimed to recognize the Saudi learners' perceptions of the role of online communication in improving their English, including the basic skills and the other aspects of language learning. This study was not about the general role of technology in language learning; rather it paid a special attention to the online communication (synchronous and asynchronous) as a learning platform rather than as a socialization means. Specifically, it provided a close insight into the informal out-of-class learning that occurs anywhere and anytime without the attendance of the teacher bearing in mind that it complements the formal in-class learning and the two can play an essential role in enhancing students' English. As far as the researcher was concerned, discussing this issue of improving and practicing language level cannot be done in isolation from the other factors that affect language learning such as motivation, confidence and attitudes towards language learning and culture, etc. First, this study concentrated on the valuable role that online communication can play in developing the input and output language skills. In particular, reading and writing skills, for example, can be developed through blogs, forums, chatting, social networking, email writing, etc. On the other hand, listening and speaking skills can also be enhanced through authentic materials, and audio and videoconferencing in social networking in general. Second, when communicators virtually engage with others, they can develop the other aspects of language learning such as building their vocabulary, being more confident, increasing their motivation and positive attitudes towards others and their cultures, and decreasing language use anxiety.
The Effect of Online College Lectures on Students Studying the English Language
IJASS JOURNAL, 2024
The study investigates the effect of online college lectures on English language learners, focusing on technical challenges, online platforms, and disadvantages of online lectures compared to face-to-face learning and language proficiency development. The study objectives are to discover how the students view online lectures in terms of learning language skills, the technical obstacles, and how they evaluate the whole process. The study used qualitative and quantitative methods, and 12 participants from different Iraqi universities/English departments were selected. A Microsoft Word has been created to conduct an interview and distributed to the specified participants. The data used inductive thematic analysis to examine students' answers to questions about online learning. This provided a flexible exploration of the diverse perspectives of the participants. The results demonstrated varied responses to the evaluation of online lectures. Though it is effective and flexible with low costs, participants stated that loneliness, limited face-to-face interaction, and technical issues are considered the main obstacles to conducting essential online teaching. The study has contributed to the field of distance education as it is one of the most affordable techniques in English language teaching, considering the outcomes and challenges involved in the process.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of chatting communication on Iranian EFL learners' oral performance. To this end, the author randomly selected fifty 17-to-18-year-old male Iranian EFL learners attending Top Notch communicative classes in language institutes in Shiraz. First, they applied the Oxford Placement Test as a proficiency test to homogenize learners, and then the learners were divided into experimental and control groups (n = 25 in each group). Both groups had a pretest to estimate their oral performance before applying treatment. The experimental group received instruction and materials via online context as treatment. However, the participants in the control group just received instruction via traditional teaching methods in the class. Finally, both groups had a post-test to measure the effect of treatment on their oral performance. The mean and standard deviation were calculated for two groups In the data collection and analysis, a paired samples t-test was conducted. Based on the results, between the two groups, there was a substantial disparity in terms of oral presentation skills., and the experimental group learners outperformed the control group's learners. The findings can be helpful for teachers to find practical ways to develop students' skills and their incentives.

The traditional form of teaching speaking skill has been via face-to-face (FTF) interaction in the classroom setting. Today in the computer age, the on-line forum can provide a virtual environment for differential communication. The pedagogical system benefits from such technology improvement for teaching foreign languages. This quasiexperimental research aimed at comparing the effects of two instructional strategies: synchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC) and FTF interaction. For this purpose, 60 EFL learners were selected from a private language institute as the control (n=30) and experimental (n=30) groups. A speaking test, designed by Hughes (2003), was administered as pretest and after a 12-session treatment the same test was administered as the posttest. The result obtained showed that participants taught based on SCMC fared better than those that were taught according to FTF interaction. Based on the findings of the current study, it is recommended that EFL teachers incorporate computermediated communication into their pedagogical procedures.
Effect of Using Internet Tools on Enhancing EFL Students' Speaking Skill
2013
This quasi-experimental study aimed to examine the effect of using shared online oral diaries on the EFL Saudi First year university students’ speaking proficiency. It used one male and one female EFL Saudi First year university students classroom sections to represent the experimental group and one male and one female classroom sections to represent the control group. An equivalent speaking proficiency test, developed by the researcher, was applied on the control and the experimental groups before the study started to ensure their equivalence; and was also used as a post-test. The results of the post-test revealed significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental group and the mean scores of the control group in favor of the experimental group.

International Journal of Interactive Mobile Technologies (iJIM)
Speaking skill pedagogy has always remained a huge enigma for English as a Second Language (ESL) educators. Despite the challenges, the need to master the skills prevail in academia.
