Zanthoxylum armatum DC is a sub deciduous aromatic, branched shrub, belongs to family Rutaceae. Its maximum length up to approximately 5 m with alternate imparipinnate leaves and flowers are small, pale yellow in colour. It is widely spread in the hot valleys of Himalayas from Jammu to Bhutan, Nepal and Pakistan. In India, the most part of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh is covered by Z. armatum plants. This plant is significantly used to cure stomachic, toothache, carminative, antiseptic and chest infections. This review has collecting information about its botanical position, morphology, phytochemical and pharmacological information on Z armatum. Various researchers have shown that Zanthoxylum armatum posseses valuable biological and pharmacological activities. Zanthoxylum armatum DC belongs to family Rutaceae is a sub deciduous aromatic shrub or small tree up to 5 m high. Bark pale brown rough croky; leave alternate imparipinnate, flowers small pale yellow and bisexual. Tender shoots are eaten as vegetable, suitable with pork and considered a good vegetable by Mishings. It is presumed that cooking with pork deworms, specially tap worms, by this vegetable. The Photomicrographic evaluation revealed interesting microscopic characteristic. The transverse section of the midrib showed schizolysogenous cavity which is a characteristic of family Rutaceae. Double layer of palisade and presence of sclerenchyma around vascular bundle is distinct identification characteristic. Also add to this is the presence of rosette shaped calcium oxalate crystals and prismatic crystals which are clearly visible in the parenchyma around vascular bundle. Several research publications are published on the medicinal plant Hyssopus officinalis L. But, the researchers find quite a difficulty to study all the publications in a short while. The present review was designed to compile and summarize all the published works on the medicinal plant H. officinalis L. traditionally used in several systems of medicine (1885-2018). It showed that the medicinal plant H. officinalis L. belonging to family Lamiaceae, is a very important culinary, medicinal and perennial plant wildly cultivated in Asia, Europe and America. It possesses numerous phytoconstituents including quercetin-7-O-β-D-apiofuranosyl-(1→2)-β-D-xylopyranoside and quercetin-7-O-β-Dapiofuranosyl-(1→2)-β-D-xylopyranoside-3'-O-β-D-glucopyranoside and possesses antioxidant, anticonvulsant, antifungal, antimicrobial, antihemolytic, antiulcer, antispasmodic and several other pharmacological activities. Its essential oil is widely being used in cosmetic, food and pharmaceutical industries worldwide. Its oil is used as an herbal medicine and very precious food additive. It is one main ingredient of the official formulation of Chartreuse. Za'atar is its well-known herbal formulation. It is a quite significant medicinal plant which can be utilized for the treatment of several diseases such as microbial infection, epilepsy, ulcer, and spasm.

This paper compile a review on pharmacological studies, phytochemical analysis and problem associated with Zanthoxylum armatum DC. The different plant parts like leaves, fruits, stem, bark, seeds and roots are used in indigenous medicine preparation against various diseases. It shows antioxidative, antitumor, antiinflammatory, analgesic, antimicrobial and insecticidal/larvicidal activity. For their bioactive principles extensive chemical analysis resulted in this specie. Due to significant medicinal properties and continuous increasing demand put this plant in endangered category (IUCN). This plant has effective phytomedicinal action.
PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF PLANT SPECIES OF GENUS ZANTHOXYLUM
The present article illustrates phytochemical investigations carried out on three plant species i.e. Zanthoxylum armatum (D.C), Zanthoxylum oxyphyllum (Edgew) and Zanthoxylum rhetsa (Roxb.) (D.C). Percent yield of the crude ethanolic extracts from Zanthoxylum armatum (Leaves), Zanthoxylum oxyphyllum (Leaves), Zanthoxylum oxyphyllum (Seeds), Zanthoxylum rhetsa (Leaves), Zanthoxylum rhetsa (Seeds) were 7.78%, 9.85%, 14.1%, 9.23%, and 14.21% respectively. The qualitative analysis showed the abundance of Glycosides, Coumarins, Flavonoids, Phenols, and Tannins in crude ethanolic extracts of ZAL, ZOL, ZOS, ZRL, and ZRS. Thus, the preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of medicinally important constituents in the plants studied. Phenolic content was found maximum in leaves of Zanthoxylum oxyphyllum followed by leaves of Zanthoxylum armatum. Seeds of Zanthoxylum rhetsa showed maximum concentration of Flavonoid followed by leaves of Zanthoxylum armatum. The present qualitative and quantitative analysis explores the wider possibility of efficient and productive extraction of different secondary metabolites from crude ethanolic extracts of ZAL, ZOL, ZOS, ZRL, and ZRS. INTRODUCTION Zanthoxylum armatum DC., syn. Zanthoxylum alatum Roxb. (family Rutaceae), known as Timur, Tephal, Indian Prickly Ash, Nepal Pepper, Toothache tree, is found in the temperate Himalaya, Kashmir, south eastern Asia and south western China as a small, dioecious, spiny shrub, up to 3.5 m high, corky bark, stems and branches armed with prickles or straight spines, leaves with stipular spines at the base, leaflets gland-dotted, small whitish green yellow flowers in short branched lateral clusters, globular wrinkled aromatic capsules, shining black seeds, reddish globose fruits used as condiment and also pickled. [1-3] The fruits are regarded as an anthelmintic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, deodorant, disinfectant, fish poison, fungistatic, insect and leech repellent, stomachic, aromatic tonic and mouth-freshener, used to treat cholera, cold, cough, abdominal pains, diarrhoea, dysentery, dyspepsia, fever, tonsillitis, limbs numbness, skin diseases and toothache. Powdered seeds are aromatic, antibacterial, anthelmintic, carminative and eaten to relieve dyspepsia, stomach disorders, indigestion and cholera. The fruits and seeds are useful against dental complaints. [1-5] MATERIAL AND METHODS The protocols of all methodologies (procedures, experimental designs and spectral data analysis) were adopted from the earlier published work. [11, 13] General procedures Melting points were determined on a Perfit melting point apparatus (Ambala, India) and are uncorrected. IR spectra were recorded using KBr pellets, with a Jasco FT/IR-5000 Spectrometer (FTS 135, Hongkong). Our study was planned to isolate chemical constituents from a methanolic extract of the fruits of this plant and to characterize their structures on the basis spectral data analysis. Phytochemical investigation of the fruits of Z. armatum led to isolate two aromatic esters identified as 2, 8-dimethyl-non-4 (Z)-en-8-ol-2-olyl benzoate (1) and 2, 10-dimethyl-undec-6-(Z)-en-10-ol-2-olyl benzoate (2), two flavanols characterized as 7,8,4-trimethoxy-3,5-dihydroxyflavanol (tambulin, 3) and 3,5,8-trihydroxy-7, 4′-dimethoxyflavanol (4) and 3,4,5-trihydroxyphenoxy-3′,4′,5′-trihydroxybenzene (5). The structures of isolated chemical constituents were established on the basis of analysis of spectral data and chemical means.
