Women in Public Sphere after The Implementation of Islamic Sharia in Aceh

This article discusses several activities intended for Acehnese women after the implementation of Islamic sharia. Activities aimed at women in public spaces have an impact on the marginalization and narrowing of women's public spaces. This article also explicitly provides an overview and analysis of what actually happened to Acehnese women so that it appears that there is a problem of the domination of male power over women based on religious, cultural, and political arguments. The purpose of this article is for the public to understand that the Aceh government has made policies aimed at women in the public sphere with the support of Wilayatul Hisbah, which has an impact on the marginalization of women. This study aims to observe the position of Acehnese women by analyzing the values of Sharia Law through the level of public compliance. Gender equality in the public sector can be seen by comparing the Acehnese women position in the RI-GAM conflict, after the peace, and after the implementation of Sharia Law concerning the protection and empowerment of women. This study uses the theory of liberal feminism because it takes the inequalities of classical gender ideology as the starting point of problem formulation. The Salience of Gender: Female Islamic Authority in Aceh, Indonesia

This article analyses the relationship between gender and religious authority in contemporary Aceh, Indonesia. It focuses on the lives and careers of two female Islamic teachers in different parts of the province. Their authority, it is argued, derives from expertise acquired from prestigious centres of religious learning, careful (if not always successful) negotiation of formal institutions – including the state – and their status as local community leaders. Their views and experiences raise urgent questions about the position of women in Acehnese society and the influence of (the rise of) normative Islam and the state. By asking what, exactly, is “female” about female Islamic authority, and what is not, this article addresses a persistent dichotomy in the literature on Southeast Asia between formal (state and religious) discourses and institutions as a source of male authority and more informal, localised practices and social relations as a domain of female authority.
Women`s Leadership and Gender Equality in Aceh: A Socio-historical Perspective

This research analyzes the problems of women`s leadership and gender equality in Aceh. The analysis is focused on the basic philosophical of women`s leadership in Aceh. The qualitative-descriptive was used as the research approach. The primary data were collected by interview and observation to the informants. The secondary data were taken from journals, books, and other reliable resources. The results of the research show that the spiritual and intellectual values of Islam and adat (custom) become the basic philosophical of Acehnese women`s leadership. Woman and man have equal roles, opportunities, rights, and responsibility to be a leader in the society based on Al-Qur`an and Sunnah, which are aligned with the Acehnese`s culture.
Local Women’s NGOs and the Reform of Islamic Law in Aceh: The Case of MISPI

Aceh has also facilitated the work of a new generation of scholars working on diverse aspects of Islam and society. Exciting new lines of investigation have been directed at the complex ways in which Islamic belief and practice are configured within the everyday experiences of Muslims as they navigate the diverse transformations of society. This volume brings together an international group of researchers who have recently conducted extensive fieldwork on various aspects of Muslim religious life in Aceh, and among different social groups. This work presents insight into diverse expressions and interpretations of Islam all across the province that can help us to better understand the range and extent of ways in which Islam both informs and reflects dynamics of political and cultural change in contemporary Aceh. Most of the chapters are adaptations of papers presented at the international conference "Islam in Contemporary Aceh: Reconfigurations of Ritual, Doctrine, Community and Authority" which was held in Leiden in September 2011. They help us to understand how diverse expressions and interpretations of Islam in relation to the current state Shariʿa project have come to inform and reflect broader dynamics of political and cultural change across the province. Given Aceh's iconic position in the history of Islam in Indonesia, and taking into account the broader field of the anthropology of Muslim societies, this volume aims to contribute to discussions about patterns of continuity and change in the fields of lived experience, the officialization of religious thought and practice, and the role of Shariʿa and the state in contemporary Muslim societies. It starts out with an overview of the process of Shariʿa implementation, and a further elaboration of the central theme of the volume. Subsequent chapters focus on such issues as gender relations, the role of civil society, the drafting of religious laws, leadership dynamics, public morality, punishment, public space, the remaking of everyday life in post-conflict, post-tsunami contexts, and changing ideas about community and individuality. As such, we hope that this book will invite further debate, and help propel and sustain the flowering of Aceh scholarship into a wider field of academic and non-academic discussion. The study of gender equality in election politics addresses structural, cultural, and institutional challenges by establishing a quota mechanism to increase women's participation in the legislature. However, However, all studies did not explicitly explain the problems and strategies used by female candidates. This article tries to fill this gap by analysing female candidates in post-conflict and tsunami areas. The main argument in this paper explains the shifting trends in Acehnese society after the conflict and tsunami that lead to economic and religious narratives used by women candidates in the 2019 general election. Thus, increased pragmatism in society is carried out by social transitions in Aceh after the conflict and tsunami where women politicians tend to make economic and religious issues a bargaining strategy to get out of subordination in the political sphere: women's politics are now increasingly masculine.
Being Women in The Land of Sharia - Politics of the Female Body, Piety and Resistance in Langsa Aceh
This study investigates the dynamic of institutionalization of Shari’a in Aceh, which focuses on analysis of the patterns of Langsa women’s resistance against religious leaders and state interpretations of the dress standards in the public space. This matter emerged because the implementation of Shari’a has been supported by local people, but the standard of Islamic dress that should be applied is still debatable among various groups in Aceh that have varied understandings and different religious visions. The regulation of dress code has been an issue for religious leaders, intellectuals, and Moslem activists. The resistance of Langsa women against the politics of body discipline could be open and secret. To analyze the forms of women’s resistance, the researcher applied James C. Scott’s hidden transcripts theory. Inspired by this theoretical framework, the researcher found that Langsa women, intellectuals, and religious leaders expressed their resistance over how women should dress in public space. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions. Accordingly, the research shows how Langsa women express their resistance towards religious hegemony and state interpretation of Islam.

Forces of globalization, local culture, and Islam continuously inform one another and dynamically manifest in cultures across the world. Scholars often assume that these influences may have distinct and independent effects. However, we argue that these global forces occur simultaneously and they may contradict or complement each other along a spectrum within Aceh, Indonesia. The manifestations and responses vary depending on the nature of the interactions of global and local factors. This spectrum represents various ways in which women negotiate identity and agency, specifically within the context of the implementation of Shari’ah Law. This research investigates the specific ways in which women’s identities influence and are influenced by the globalization of feminism, matrifocal traditions, and Islamic veiling practices in Aceh. Women's positions on politic could be seen from their involvement in the political arena and the ability of women to occupy decision-making positions. Women's inability to achieve important positions in public is influenced by many factors, including ideology and government policy, as well as by social changes. This article aims to focus on the condition of Acehnese local politic and women by analyzing their roles and positions in the politic system as well as in other institutions. The discussion intends to explore the condition of political change that has triggered the marginalization of Acehnese women in part of local many areas. This article implies that the exclusion of local politic and elite politic from public spaces is largely caused by the internal and external problems, by protracted conflicts and tsunami effected in Aceh was a new face.
