Assessment of community response to odor annoyance in nearby residents of a vegetable oil processing plant ABSTRACT Odor pollution is one of the air pollution evident indicators, emitted from various sources including industries. Depending on the intensity and frequency of odor emission, it affects health status, social and individual life of the neighbors gradually. Nearby residents complain about odor annoyance and worry about its negative impacts on their health and welfare. Pars Vegetable Oil Processing Plant in Tehran is located near the crowded residential areas. So, many people are daily exposed to the plant annoying odor. In this study a standard verified questionnaire method has been applied to determine the odor annoying level on the residents. The results showed that among 300 randomly selected families, 282 have participated in the interview (94%), their mean age was 37 years. 95% of the respondents have perceived the odor in their environment and 94% of them introduced the Oil Processing Plant as the main source of odor. 92% of the respondents have perceived the odor frequently in a day, for 52% of which intensity of odor is unbearable and 72% of them have selected the highest odor annoyance level option. This research clearly showed that odor annoyance intensity and degree is very high for neighborhoods and odor from this plant is the first and most effective odor source in the study area which has considerable impact on people's outdoor activities. Females perceive the odor more bothersome and intensely in addition, workers feel odor intensity and annoyance less. According to the results of this survey as the first research about odor pollution in Iran, more comprehensive researches about odor pollution is recommended.
