A New Species of Simulium (Diptera: Simuliidae) from Open Areas in Central Amazonia, Brazil

Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 1998

The larva, pupa, male and female of Simulium daltanhani n. sp. are described and illustrated. This species shares diagnostic characteristics with Simulium quadrifidum Lutz, Simulium cauchense Floch & Abonnenc, Simulium brevifurcatum Lutz and Simulium siolii Py-Daniel. It was collected in three counties (Manaus, Presidente Figueiredo and Itacoatiara) in the State of Amazonas, Brazil. Its habitat includes streams in disturbed, open areas where the forest has been cut for road construction; it was not collected in adjacent forested streams, suggesting that it colonizes disturbed habitats. The larval subesophageal ganglion is discussed as a useful character, when pigmented, to distinguish this species within a limited geographic area.

Simulium (Chirostilbia) brunnescens (Diptera: Simuliidae) - new species from the Brazilian cerrado, Manso Dam, state of Mato Grosso, Brazil

Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 2012

According to Adler and Crosskey (2011), three genera of Simuliidae occur in Brazil: Araucnephia Wygodzinsky & Coscarón, Lutzsimulium d'Andretta & d'Andretta (2 subgenera) and Simulium Latreille (8 subgenera). The subgenus Simulium (Chirostilbia) is represented by 13 species, all of which are found in Brazil, including one economically important species, the pest Simulium pertinax Kollar. Six species in this subgenus are known from for the state of Mato Grosso (MT), Brazil (Simulium dekeyseri Shelley & Py-Daniel, Simulium friedlanderi Py-Daniel, S. pertinax, Simulium serranum Coscarón, Simulium spinibranchium Lutz and Simulium subpallidum Lutz). In this paper we describe one additional species: Simulium (Chirostilbia) brunnescens sp. nov., based on adults, pupae and larvae. MaterialS and MethodS During field studies of the Simuliidae fauna of the Manso Dam area (MT), carried out by the Laboratório de Simulídeos e Oncocercose, Instituto Oswaldo Cruz-Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (LSO/IOC-Fiocruz), state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil a new species was found, which is described here. The reservoir has an area of 427 km 2 and spans through the municipalities of Chapada dos Guimarães and Nova Brasilândia, in the Brazilian cerrado, a biodiversity hotspot according to Myers et al. (2000). The climate is tropical (hot and humid, with 4-5 dry months). Annual temperatures average 24ºC and annual rainfall is between 1.250-1.500 mm. The area has a plain relief, with steep cliffs and vegetation Financial support: LSO/IOC-FIOCRUZ, Eletrobrás Furnas Centrais Elétricas, ANEEL, CNPq

Larval biometry of Simulium rubrithorax (Diptera: Simuliidae) and size comparison between populations in the states of Minas Gerais and Roraima, Brazil

Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 2003

The number of larval instars of Simulium (Hemicnetha) rubrithorax Lutz (Diptera: Nematocera) was determined using the lateral length of the head capsule. In this study 1,035 larvae, of different sizes, were measured (639 from the state of Roraima and 396 from the state of Minas Gerais). A frequency distribution analysis was carried out on the measurements of the lateral length of the head capsule to determine the number of larval instars. The limits of each instar were defined by the lower frequency of the measurements falling in a range of values, by the presence of the "egg burster" that characterizes the first larval instar, and by the developmental stage of the gill histoblast. The determination of the instar number was tested using a Student's t-test (p < 0.05), the Dyar rule and the Crosby growth rule. The results indicate the existence of 7 larval instars for this species, although this result was not in accordance to the Crosby rule. Last-instar larvae from two widely separated geographical populations (Roraima and Minas Gerais), collected in habitats with different water temperature were compared and no differences (p > 0.05) were observed between them.

Description of Simulium damascenoi (Diptera: Simuliidae) male and the black-fly species from the State of Amapá, Brazil

Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 2003

Five species are included in the Simulium siolii group, which is placed in the subgenus Psaroniocompsa (Diptera: Simuliidae). Of these five species, only two (Simulium siolii Py-Daniel and Simulium tergospinosum Hamada) have been described in all their life stages, except eggs. Knowledge of the taxonomic characters of all life stages of a species is important in order to clarify interspecific and higher-level taxonomic relationships. The objectives of the present study are to describe the male of Simulium damascenoi Py-Daniel, to provide a list of black-fly species their bionomics and distributions in the state of Amapá, Brazil, and to provide an identification key for larvae and pupae for these species.

Spatial and temporal distribution of black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) in the Pampa biome streams, Brazil

Biologia, 2021
