Background: Among the effects of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)-weak androgen secreted in reticular zone of adrenal cortex are improvement of lipid profile, increase of HDL cholesterol concentration, decrease of insulin resistance and increase of nitric oxide synthesis in vascular endothelium, what makes up its antiatherogenic impact. Regular physical activity exerts similar effects. Aim: The aim of the study was assessment of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate DHEAS serum concentrations in male patients attending early cardiac rehabilitation program based on exercise training. Subjects and methods: 111 male subjects were enrolled to the study, in this number. 30patients up to 1 month post acute cardiac incident composed the study group, 54 -chronic coronary heart disease (CHD) were the first comparison group and 27 clinically healthy males were the second comparison group. In the study group prospective observation and in the comparison groups a cross-over observation, were performed. The DHEAS was assayed by immunoenzymatic method using Roche Elecsys-DHEAS diagnostic kit. Results: Significant increase of DHEAS concentration after completing rehabilitation program was observed in the group of 27 males. It changed from 195,05±93,1 µg/dl before the program to 216,69±96,7 µg/dl after completing the rehabilitation p<0,05. Average DHEAS concentration in study group -rehabilitated patients was higher than in the chronic CHD patients (163,49±24,51 µg/dl) p<0,05 and wasn't significantly different from concentration in healthy group. In the group of patients with chronic CHD no statistically significant differences of DHEAS concentration were found between the active and nonactive subgroups. Conclusions: The increase of serum DHEAS concentration appears among the effects of eight weeks comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation.
