Gender Discrimination Among UCF MPA Students

Gender discrimination is often studied researchers, but few have studied perceptions from graduate level students. Therefore, this research project explored the levels of gender discrimination in the workplace as perceived by Masters of Public Administration (MPA) students at the University of Central Florida (UCF). Using this population to study allowed us to use their unique position as future policy makers and administrators to affect positive changes in this area. Additionally, much research focuses on pay and promotion rates between men and women; however, our research focused on three other variables that may have been previously overlooked as impacting levels of discrimination. The variables of interest included training opportunities, work/life balance policies at the workplace and continuing education opportunities. Using Likert-based questions, we surveyed 31 MPA students at UCF and received 28 completed responses (for a 90% response rate). The responses were coded, analyzed and examined via multiple regression techniques to determine the results of our hypotheses. The majority of our respondents were female - 61% compared to 39% male and the most common age range was between 25 and 29 years of age. Most respondents had been with their employer between 1 – 5 years and held management positons. Interestingly, more women than men held management positions. The R2 value of 0.539 resulted in a 54% goodness of fit measure. Both the work/life balance and training opportunities were found to be significant, at 0.029 and 0.010, respectively. Continuing education was not significant (0.231). The results of our analyses showed support for our first two hypotheses. Specifically, the more training available to an employee, the less perceived discrimination and likewise, the more flexible the work/life balance policies, the less perceived discrimination. No relationship was found between continuing education and perceived discrimination levels. These results should be examined by managers as offering more training and more flexible work/life policies, when reasonable, could have positive impacts on perceived levels of gender discrimination in the workplace.
