The culture of foreign nations entering Indonesia is a form of real influence for Indonesia which is a result of emerging technological developments caused by globalization. Korean drama, music, and video are packaged uniquely based on their culture and practice obedient values towards ancestors, touching love stories that make teenagers like the products of the ginseng country. It is undeniable that the presence of Korean music in Indonesia is very popular with many people, they are willing to do anything to be able to fulfill their desires for what they like. Therefore, here we want to examine the level and impact of Indonesian youth fanaticism on music and Korean culture.

Appropriating South Korean popular culture: I-pop and K-drama remakes in Indonesia

The dynamic flow of South Korean popular cultural products has transformed the way " East Asia " is perceived in Indonesia. Consumption of these products greatly influences consumers' imagination, as argued by Appadurai, which becomes an arena of negotiation as well as contestation in the sites of individual and communal agency. On the one hand, consumers in Indonesia perceive these products as a representation of " East Asia, " which is considered a well-known entity that is often used as a strategic defense mechanism (i.e., against Western cultural domination). On the other hand, consumers are seeking for more familiar goods in the form of mimicking products, such as I-pop's boy/girl band or Indonesian television sinetron copying plots from K-dramas. This paper investigates how cultural borrowing and/or appropriating are strategically used in the meaning-making process of the new global and the modern portrayed by South Korean popular cultural products and their copycat versions. The author argues that, instead of focusing on the authentic and inauthentic cultural products that oversimplify the debate, this phenomenon should be analyzed as a form of pastiche, which reveals the repetitive nature of popular culture flows in Asia as well as of cultural borrowing and/or appropriating.

Korea Journal, 2020

Korean popular culture and its digital technologies are everywhere. From Japan and China in East Asia, the U.S. and Canada in North America, and to Chile, Argentina, and Brazil in Latin America, many global fans currently enjoy Korean television dramas, films, popular music (K-pop), and digital games. Once small and peripheral, Korea has now emerged as one of the most significant non-Western hubs for the production and circulation of transnational popular culture and digital technologies. Taking on non-Western local forms, Korean cultural and digital creations have rapidly become global sensations, as is especially illustrated by the music group BTS’s worldwide success towards the end of the 2010s and the early 2020s. Korea’s export of its domestic cultural goods and services to foreign countries has increased exponentially by as much as 44.1 times, from US$188.9 million in 1998 to US$8.3 billion by 2018 (KOCCA 2019). The South Korean Music Industry: The Rise and Success of ‘K-Pop’ By: Johan

2017

Korean popular music, also known as 'K-pop', has become a true phenomenon attracting fans from all over the world and is a part of the Korean wave (an English transcription of the Korean term Hallyu). However, with globalization and new possibilities in foreign markets, there are challenges and difficulties when it comes to selling products to global consumers. Many have debated whether it is more viable to keep or remove cultural elements or as Chen refers it to, "cultural odor" from cultural products targeted for an international audience. When it comes to cultural products such as K-pop, it is argued that removing cultural odor is essential in order for consumers to adopt cultural products. Consumers, who are gradually becoming more global minded, could then inscribe own personal meaning, yet also, it may create a shared experience between different cultures creating one common pan-Asian culture, something that is desired by many East Asian consumers. On the other hand, some people claim that retaining cultural odor is necessary in order to differentiate products and connect them to the origin (Chen 2015). There are two main theories that attempt to explain the reason behind the K-pop phenomenon. First, many scholars argue that K-pop "rests on the concept of cultural hybridity or Pop Asianism" and not a new cultural force (Oh 2013, pp. 389). The success of Hallyu as a whole is mainly attributed to the fact that the Korean culture inherits a supernational hybrid of characters (Kim 2015). There are three major archetypes the advocates of this theory suggest K-pop stems from. First and foremost, there is the circular argument. Korean popular music stems from Chinese and Japanese culture and their earlier global success. K-pop is a hybridity of the grand Asian cultures, China and Japan, and was therefore bound to succeed considering the advancements of Asian culture (Oh 2013). Secondly, it is the exploitation of cultural resonance. With regards to Korean cultural products, Roald H. Maliangkay states that they are: common among Chinese consumers, their selection of Korean products may in part stem from the strong connection of these products with Chinese culture itself. If the cultural similarity is a major factor, then, it may not be so important that the product derives from Korea. […] Will Chinese consumers continue to favor Korean entertainment when they find that domestic products are just as good and Show a similar degree of economic and technological success (q.b. WACANA: Jurnal Ilmiah Ilmu Komunikasi, 2022

The purpose of this study is to trace the growing attractiveness of the Korean Wave to understand the domestic culture of Korea that is becoming a global trend. The study is focused on the factors facilitating the formation of the phenomenon and proves that this trend has become one of the country's main export commodities and a “soft power”, as the promotion of Korean culture is a matter of national importance and pride for Seoul. The context for the study is the cultural homogenization of the West and the East. Is it a blessing or an evil? What are its challenges and achievements, advantages, and disadvantages? What are the reasons for South Korean cultural expansion? The method utilized in the rerearch is narrative analysis to provide an overview o...
