The proper study of educational psychology
Higher Education Quarterly, 1979
IN 1899 William James published his Talks to Teachers. His opening lecture was a counsel of caution. I say, moreover, that you make a great, a very great mistake, if you think that psychology, being the science of the mind's laws, is something from which you can deduce definite programmes and schemes and methods of instruction for immediate schoolroom use. Psychology is a science, and teaching is an art; and sciences never generate arts directly of themselves.

Importance of studing educational psychology 1
In any given classroom, pupils come from different environments, have different interests and understand at different rates, in different ways. Pupils are not always open to their teachers on issues affecting their learning, so there is need for the teacher to know the individual strengths and weaknesses of his or her pupils without verbally communication with them. The key goal of going to school is to learn. Hence, educational psychology is a tool used by teacher to promote learning of different pupils in the same class since the key goal of going to school is to learn. The writer is going to define psychology, educational psychology and classroom teacher, explain the relevance of aspects of human development and lastly make a conclusion. Wade and Tavris (1993) define psychology as the study of behaviour and mental studies processes and how they are affected by an organism's physical state, mental state and external environment. From the definition it is clear that psychology is the study of human mind and way of controlling it. Human development according to Miller (2000) view that it is the social, physical, emotional, cognitive and cultural changes take place throughout the lifespan of an individual. Baller (1982) states that it includes growth and ablity to perfom certain functions. In my own point of view it is the changing of way throughout life. Mercer and Pettit, (2001) defined a secondary school teacher as a person who provides just enough guidance and intellectual support for pupils to be able to swim out of their depth to go just a little further intellectually than they would be able to go alone. Hence, pupils will be able to acquire new knowledge. Curzon, (1985), also defined a secondary school teacher as a person with a system of activities intended to induce learning, compromising the deliberate and systematic creation and control of those conditions in which learning does occur. From the above definitions, a secondary school teacher is one who creates a good learning environment to the pupils and passes knowledge to them. Aspects of human development is relevant to a teacher since he or she can tell the behaviour, strengths and weaknesses of a pupil with and without talking to him or her. Below are the importances of educational psychology to a teacher. The importance of psychology is divided into two aspects that are to study the learning situation and the application of learning and teaching principles. Firstly, the writer is going to state its importance to the study of the learning situation.
