An Empirical Analysis on Urban-Rural Linkage in Mumbai Metropolitan Area

2015

: The concept of ‘urban-rural linkage or continuum’ has been developed as a mechanism to better view and understand the inherent differences between the two terms in the field of planning and regional development. Examining consensus between the conceptual approaches in the literature and actual transforming process in some of the most dynamic and least regulated cities in the world – Mumbai metropolitan region, this paper tries to describe the increasing significance of urban-rural linkages in the livelihoods of rural residents, including spatial and occupational transformations and their interdependence on surrounding urban centers and towns. The results of the network analysis suggested the role of small and intermediate urban centers in facilitating exchange between the rural villages and towns by offering employments and markets both for farming and non-farming sectors. This also indicates that urban-rural linkages can be strengthened by the local or regional authorities which ...

Changing Dimensions of Rural-Urban Relationship in India: Vision for the Twenty-first Century

India is traditionally treated as a ‘country of villages’, despite the fact it has a long history of urbanisation. The structure of the country with self-sufficient village economy was destroyed due to two centuries of colonial rule and the metropolitan cities (the three port cities and the imperial capital) became the face of urbanization in India. A the time of the independence, more than 70% of the people were directly or indirectly dependent on agriculture and almost an equal proportion of the Gross Domestic Product came from the primary sector. Planned effort of development was mostly directed towards rural sector consisting of the agriculture and a small artisan-based handicrafts sector. The rural-urban dichotomy was synonymous with the agriculture-industry divide. The issue of ‘terms of trade’ and rural-urban linkage was also discussed on that assumption. But after four decades of planned development efforts and two decades of opening up, the time has come revise the whole idea. This paper argues that the dichotomous approach to development has harmed both the sectors. Now the composition of the Gross Domestic Product is dominated by contribution from the tertiary sector and as far as occupational structure is concerned, the service sector has grown at the cost of the agricultural sector, with an almost stagnant secondary sector sandwiched in between. This change has affected the rural-urban structure and relationship in a big way. The bigger urban areas have grown in number and size at the cost of smaller towns- breaking the basic link between the village and town. The diseconomies of unmanageable growth of big cities are showing prominently but there is no approach to make the smaller centres more sustainable and livable. On the other hand, non-remunerative agriculture is pushing the rural unskilled mass to the informal sector of the cities. The paper concludes by listing the immediate priorities for the days to come – skill development for the emerging sectors, removing the information gap between the rural and urban through innovative use of ICT and integrated settlement planning. Keywords: Rural-urban linkage, rural-urban dichotomy, urban hierarchy, occupational structure, integrated settlement planning;

Recognition of Rural-Urban Linkage through Understanding the Potential Impact of Growth Center: A Case Study of Paragram Hut, Nawabganj, Dhaka

SSRN Electronic Journal (1556-5068), 2018

The growth center enhances the linkages between rural and urban area through providing opportunities and scopes for both areas as well as by promoting facilities for agriculture, fishery, livestock etc. by ensuring market accessibility and socioeconomic interactions among rural and urban people in context of the exchange of goods, ideas, information and facilities of different markets. The growth center plays the role of transaction point between urban and rural area and thus help to reform the economy of both areas and bring changes in financial and fiscal policy and macro transformation as well as the transformations in agriculture and livelihood diversification. It has become the channel to replace the rural urban dichotomy in rural urban continuum. Therefore the paper tries to find out the existing nature and pattern of the linkage by investigating the potential impacts of growth centers. It also reveals the way how agricultural transformation is taking place in response to changing urban market demand and vice versa. It focuses on the input and output side scenario in rural and urban economy and find out the flow pattern and the contribution of the communication sector on it. It also tries to find the interrelation between rural-urban linkage and the influence of growth centre on linkage by identifying the stimulus such as infrastructure development, complementary investment, and NGO investments occurred in growth centres and the surrounding area. The study finally provides some arena of potentialities for further improvement of rural-urban linkage through more efficient policies. Analysis of Socio-Economic Effects of Metropolises on Suburban Villages from the Perspective of Local Communities (Case study: Mehrabad village -Damavand city

Cities and villages are the main centers of human societies. They shape the geographical foundations of an area that have special relationships with each other based on socioeconomic and spatial characteristics. The rapid spread of technology in recent decades has transformed the way of living and working in cities and villages. On the one hand, this expansion has caused anti-urbanism and on the other hand, it has increased the desire for second homes and rest in places far from cities. This is especially the case for neighboring villages in metropolitan areas, especially Tehran and other large cities. Therefore, every rural settlement located on the outskirts and around these urban centers has been exposed to attention and impact, which affected the villages in different ways. The question is that how villagers see these developments and how they feel the impacts of such changes. The purpose of this article is to study the social and economic effects of the expansion and growth of the metropolis of Tehran in the village of Mehrabad from the perspective of the residents themselves. The research method is based on documentary and field studies and quantitative and qualitative methods. Rural-Urban Interaction in the Developing World

2004

Sustaining the rural and urban populations of the developing world has been identified as a key global challenge for the twenty-first century. Rural-Urban Interaction in the Developing World is an introduction to the relationships between rural and urban places in the developing world and shows that not all their aspects are as obvious as migration from country to city. There is now a growing realisation that rural-urban relations are far more complex. The book takes rural-urban relations as its focus, rather than considering them as only a part of either urban development or rural development. It examines a range of interactions between the rural and the urban by considering these interactions as flows that can take place in either direction. It considers migration as just one of a series of flows between the rural and the urban, rather than only focusing on the phenomenon of rural-to-urban migration as a strong and highly visible indicator of urbanisation. Each of the flows of people, food, the environment, money and ideas has its own chapter. The book steps back from accepted orthodoxies by considering the flows as interactions that may take place in either direction, across space as well as within sectors. These flows are also considered within the context of development theory. Rural-Urban Interaction in the Developing World uses a wealth of student-friendly features including boxed case studies, discussion questions and annotated guides to further reading to place rural-urban interactions within a broader context. it promotes a clearer understanding of the opportunities, as well as the challenges, that rural-urban interactions represent.
