The Rubber Hand Illusion: feeling of ownership and proprioceptive drift do not go hand in hand

In the Rubber Hand Illusion, the feeling of ownership of a rubber hand displaced from a participant's real occluded hand is evoked by synchronously stroking both hands with paintbrushes. A change of perceived finger location towards the rubber hand (proprioceptive drift) has been reported to correlate with this illusion. To measure the time course of proprioceptive drift during the Rubber Hand Illusion, we regularly interrupted stroking (performed by robot arms) to measure perceived finger location. Measurements were made by projecting a probe dot into the field of view (using a semi-transparent mirror) and asking participants if the dot is to the left or to the right of their invisible hand (Experiment 1) or to adjust the position of the dot to that of their invisible hand (Experiment 2). We varied both the measurement frequency (every 10 s, 40 s, 120 s) and the mode of stroking (synchronous, asynchronous, just vision). Surprisingly, with frequent measurements, proprioceptive drift occurs not only in the synchronous stroking condition but also in the two control conditions (asynchronous stroking, just vision). Proprioceptive drift in the synchronous stroking condition is never higher than in the just vision condition. Only continuous exposure to asynchronous stroking prevents proprioceptive drift and thus replicates the differences in drift reported in the literature. By contrast, complementary subjective ratings (questionnaire) show that the feeling of ownership requires synchronous stroking and is not present in the asynchronous stroking condition. Thus, subjective ratings and drift are dissociated. We conclude that different mechanisms of multisensory integration are responsible for proprioceptive drift and the feeling of ownership. Proprioceptive drift relies on visuoproprioceptive integration alone, a process that is inhibited by asynchronous stroking, the most common control condition in Rubber Hand Illusion experiments. This dissociation implies that conclusions about feelings of ownership cannot be drawn from measuring proprioceptive drift alone.

Dissociation of proprioceptive drift and feelings of ownership in the somatic rubber hand illusion

The sense of self is a complex phenomenon, comprising various sensations of bodily self-consciousness. Interestingly, the experience of possessing a body-'embodiment'-and locating the body within space may be modulated by the Rubber Hand Illusion (RHI). Measures of the RHI include proprioceptive drift (PD), the extent to which the hand is mis-localised towards the rubber hand, and subjective questionnaires. Although these measures often correlate, research from the visual RHI suggests that they reflect separate underlying processes. We investigated whether increasing the duration of tactile stimulation would affect PD and questionnaires differently during the somatic RHI. Participants experienced 30 s, 2 min, or 5 min of synchronous or asynchronous tactile stimulation. Increasing duration affected only PD, with increased drift following 5 min vs 30 s of stimulation. Our findings suggest that PD and questionnaires are not proxies for one another, but reflect separate underlying processes of the somatic RHI.

The role of distance from the body and distance from the real hand in ownership and disownership during the rubber hand illusion

A key tool for investigating body ownership is the rubber hand illusion, in which synchronous multisensory feedback can induce feelings of ownership over a fake hand. Much research in the field aims to tease apart the mechanisms that underlie this phenomenon. Currently there is conflicting evidence as to whether increasing the distance between the real and fake hands (within reaching space) can reduce the illusion. The current study examines this further by modulating, not only the absolute distance between the real and fake hands but also their relative distance from body midline. It is found that the strength of the illusion is reduced only when the fake hand is both far from the real hand and far from the trunk; illusion scores over a fake hand in the same position can then be increased by moving the real hand nearer. This is related to peripersonal space surrounding the trunk and the hand. Subjective disownership of the real hand, and proprioceptive drift measures were also taken and may be driven by different mechanisms.

Tactile and vestibular mechanisms underlying ownership for body parts: a non-visual variant of the rubber hand illusion

Ownership for body parts depends on multisensory integration of visual, tactile and proprioceptive signals. In a previous study, we demonstrated that vestibular signals also contribute to ownership for body parts, since vestibular stimulation increased illusory ownership for a rubber hand. However, it remained an open question whether the vestibular information acts on the visual or on the tactile input. Here, we used a non-visual variant of the rubber hand illusion, manipulating the synchrony between tactile signals from the participant's left and right hand. The results revealed a strong illusory ownership through self-reports (questionnaires) and proprioceptive drift measures. Interestingly, however, there was no influence of vestibular stimulation on illusory ownership and the proprioceptive drift. The present data suggest that vestibular signals do not interfere with the tactile-proprioceptive mechanisms underlying ownership for body parts when visual feedback from the body surface is absent.

Quantifying body ownership information processing and perceptual bias in the rubber hand illusion

Bodily illusions have fascinated humankind for centuries, and researchers have studied them to learn about the perceptual and neural processes that underpin multisensory channels of bodily awareness. The influential rubber hand illusion (RHI) has been used to study changes in the sense of body ownership: how a limb is perceived to belong to one’s body, which is a fundamental building block in many theories of bodily awareness, self-consciousness, embodiment, and self-representation. Proprioceptive drift is affected by the intermanual distance rather than the distance from the body’s midline in the rubber hand illusion

In the rubber hand illusion (RHI), simultaneous brush stroking of a subject’s hidden hand and a visible rubber hand induces a transient illusion of the latter to “feel like it’s my hand” and a proprioceptive drift of the hidden own hand toward the rubber hand. Recent accounts of the RHI have suggested that the illusion would only occur if weighting of conflicting sensory information and their subsequent integration results in a statistically plausible compromise. In three different experiments, we investigated the role of distance between the two hands as well as their proximity to the body’s midline in influencing the occurrence of the illusion. Exploring the subjective experience of the "rubber hand" illusion

Despite the fact that the rubber hand illusion (RHI) is an experimental paradigm that has been widely used in the last 14 years to investigate different aspects of the sense of bodily self, very few studies have sought to investigate the subjective nature of the experience that the RHI evokes. The present study investigates the phenomenology of the RHI through a specific elicitation method. More particularly, this study aims at assessing whether the conditions usually used as control in the RHI have an impact in the sense of body ownership and at determining whether there are different stages in the emergence of the illusion. The results indicate that far from being "all or nothing," the illusion induced by the RHI protocol involves nuances in the type of perceptual changes that it creates. These perceptual changes affect not only the participants' perception of the rubber hand but also the perception of their real hand. In addition, perceptual effects may vary greatly between participants and, importantly, they evolve over time.

Judging the position of the artificial hand induces a “visual” drift towards the real one during the rubber hand illusion

When subjects look at a rubber hand being brush-stroked synchronously with their own hidden hand, they might feel a sense of ownership over the rubber hand. The perceived mislocalization of the own hand towards the rubber hand (proprioceptive drift) would reflect an implicit marker of this illusion occurring through the dominance of vision over proprioception. This account, however, contrasts with principles of multisensory integration whereby percepts result from a "statistical sum" of different sensory afferents. In this case, the most-known proprioceptive drift should be mirrored by complementary visual drift of the rubber hand in the opposite direction. We investigated this issue by designing two experiments in which subjects were not only requested to localize their own hand but also the rubber hand and further explored the subjective feeling of the illusion. In both experiments, we demonstrated a (visual) drift in the opposite direction of the proprioceptive drift, suggesting that both hands converge toward each other. This might suggest that the spatial representations of the two hands are integrated in a common percept placed in between them, contradicting previous accounts of substitution of the real hand by the rubber hand.
