The propagation of benchmarking concepts in Indian manufacturing industry
Benchmarking: An International Journal, 2008
Purpose -This paper aims to present existence comprehensive analysis of state of implementation of benchmarking concepts in Indian automotive companies. Design/methodology/approach -The research is carried out through a mixed method of research approach comprising of a survey of 300 auto companies in India. Out of 300, 48 valid responses together with three additional case studies were used in the data analysis. Inclusion of case studies was aspired to get deeper insight into the issues pertaining to adoption of best practices, and subsequently the implementation of benchmarking activities. Findings -Benchmarking has been unanimously accepted as an effective performance and productivity improvement tool by Indian auto companies. However, Indian automobile manufacturers still see benchmarking as a tool to compare product attributes, quality attributes, operations, and processes. Moreover, it has been perceived as being less applicable at strategic level. Results also show that benchmarking is in its primary stage in the Indian automotive industry, and it still needs much more commitment from top management for its proliferation. Lesser significance is given to competitor benchmarking due to the fear of losing competitive advantage, and the problem of confidentiality. Reasons identified in this study for not using benchmarking include "lack of human resources" as most important, followed by "financial constraints", and "lack of internal expertise". Research limitations/implications -Research results should be generalized and reproduced with a larger sample size. Owing to the scarce application of benchmarking in small and medium enterprises (SMEs), separate study should be carried out to find ways to encourage benchmarking implementation in Indian auto component manufacturing SMEs.
Industrial Benchmarking: A Critical Research and Practices in Automotive Manufacturing Unit
2012
This paper is based on a survey conducted on top ma nagement’s awareness and understanding of benchmarking in Indian automotive manufacturing com panies. The main objective of this paper is to provide empirical evidence on top management’ s awareness and understanding of the benchmarking technique and its role towards busines survival and competitiveness. To achieve this objective, the authors developed a questionnai re comprising of fifthteen questions, checked for reliability and validity by experts and practit ioners. The survey results and findings revealed that almost 17% are in the very good category, abou t 55% of the respondents companies are still in the moderate category, nearly 22% are in the low category and 6% have very little understanding and knowledge as regards to benchmark ing. In summary, the survey analysis showed large majority of the Indian companies invol ves in the automotive manufacturing sector still experiencing lack of knowledge as regards to the benchmar...
Best practices for the effectiveness of benchmarking in the Indonesian manufacturing companies
Benchmarking: An International Journal, 2010
Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to examine best practices that contribute to the effectiveness of benchmarking in Indonesian manufacturing industries. Design/methodology/approach -A total of 250 questionnaires are distributed to representatives of the Badan Pengelola Industri Strategis (BPIS) registered companies, specifically to the quality managers or production managers that are involved in the benchmarking process in companies. Findings -In total, 155 responded to the questionnaire; that gives a response rate of 51.67 percent. Analysis of the data has shown that some benchmarking practices, e.g. the manufacturing process, and organizational and environmental factors do significantly influence the effectiveness of benchmarking.

A Systematic Literature Review of Benchmarking Implementation in various Industries
IJIEM - Indonesian Journal of Industrial Engineering and Management
This paper aims to explore benchmarking in various industries beyond Indonesia to find the gap between each industry and what makes it different from Indonesia. Benchmarking is recognized as an essential instrument for continuous quality enhancement. In this paper, the author has reviewed 60 articles distributed from 2015 to 2020 in a variety of journal research and journal review. Systematic literature reviews are the approaches used in this study since a precise, consistent, and clear methodology, with a variety of steps, guarantees sufficient rigor and clarity in the literature review process. Authors have a review in multi-perspective to help researchers, academics, and practitioners more deeply understand and take a closer look at the growth, development, and applicability of this technique. Authors have classification the various paper-based on goals and scope of achievement from benchmarking applicable. In Addition, this paper also needs to find a better solution from each ga...

An investigation of the adoption and implementation of benchmarking
International Journal of Operations & Production Management, 2010
Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to use survey data collected from 453 respondents, from over 40 countries, to determine the current levels of use of benchmarking as an improvement technique. It identifies where and how benchmarking is implemented within organisations and compares the popularity of benchmarking against other improvement tools. Finally, it provides an evidence based opinion on whether benchmarking is a fad or an established management technique. Design/methodology/approach -An on-line questionnaire was used to collect data. The questionnaire was translated into five languages and promoted by the Global Benchmarking Network, a network of benchmarking competency centres, representing 21 countries. The data were then analysed using SPSS statistical software. Findings -The analysis suggests that benchmarking (informal and formal) is used by a majority of organisations although best practice benchmarking is only used by a core minority. Benchmarking effectiveness compares favourably with effectiveness of other improvement tools and a majority of respondents intend to continue using benchmarking in the future.
A Global Vision over Benchmarking Process: Benchmarking Based Enterprises
2008
Benchmarking uses the knowledge and the experience of others to improve the enterprise. Starting from the analysis of the performance and underlying the strengths and weaknesses of the enterprise it should be assessed what must be done in order to improve its activity. Using benchmarking techniques, an enterprise looks at how processes in the value chain are performed. The approach based on the vision "from the whole towards the parts" (a fragmented image of the enterprise's value chain) reduces the focus of the benchmarking process of the enterprise. This is the reason why we introduce a new concept: "benchmarking based enterprises" (BBE). Accordingly to this, the enterprises, particularly corporations, gather common features, accept their industry leaders, adapt to their specific features and accept a new vision of benchmarking shifted "from part to the whole".
