Impact of Pollution on Environment and Health: An Investigation (original) (raw)

11.Effect of Pollution on Common Man in India

The present generation and the coming generations have to solve three grave problems, namely, population, poverty and pollution if they have to survive. We will focus ourselves on pollution for now. The environmental problems in India are growing rapidly. The increasing economic development and a rapidly growing population that has taken the country from 300 million people in 1947 to more than one billion people today is putting a strain on the environment, infrastructure, and the country's natural resources. Industrial pollution, soil erosion, deforestation, rapid industrialization, urbanization, and land degradation are all worsening problems for our country. Overexploitation of the country's resources, be it land or water and the industrialization process has resulted environmental degradation of resources. Environmental pollution is one of the most serious problems that is facing humanity and other life forms on our planet today. It is no longer a new or surprising fact that mankind has actually brought the Earth to the brink of disaster. Man's suicidal actions will soon turn this wonderful planet into a lifeless and hostile planet. The ill-effects of ever-growing population and urbanization have already been seen, felt and realized to some extent in different circles. Today, the air we breathe, the water we drink and the land on which we grow our food, have been poisoned. Numerous problems like ozone layer depletion, greenhouse effect, global climatic changes, depletion of ground water levels, drinking water crises, etc. are all plaguing the Earth today in the twenty-first century and posing serious threats to the survival as well as the very existence of the human race on this Earth. Industrialization and urbanisation have resulted in a profound deterioration of India's living quality. Out of the 3 million premature deaths that occur in the world each year due to pollution, the highest number are assessed to occur in India. According to the World Health Organization, the country of India is one of the top ten polluted countries in the world. According to another study, while India's Gross Domestic Product has increased 2.5 times over the past two decades, while the pollution has quadrupled in the same period. Through the paper we will be throwing light on various forms of pollution prevalent in India and their effect on the common man of the country. And the measures that can be used to curb the pollution and minimize the effect of pollution on the people.

HUMAN HEALTH IMPLICATIONS DUE TO AIR AND WATER POLLUTION: INDIAN CONTEXT

ABSTRACT Man is part of nature, and not separate or independent; at the same time man is unique in the influence he has over nature. In that process, if he does not take care to protect and cherish nature, but depletes or destroys nature, he will find that his own life and that of his children is in jeopardy. Renowned Swedish naturalist K. Curry – Lindahl says: “The human population is in fact the WORST and basic forms of pollution, all major environmental problem that threaten the future of mankind are caused basically by one factor too many people.” It is man’s sheer number which is the root cause of all pollution problems. And as such the modern ecologists have given to baby-boom a new name ‘population’. Human health is a state of complete physical, mental or social well-being and hot merely absence of disease or infirmity. The global strategy as adopted in 1981 is to achieve “Health for all by 2000 through primary health care.” The task is not easy for a county of India’s size inhabited by one seventh of the total world population. Pollution; country’s environmental problems are affected by the level of its economic development, the availability of natural resources and the life style of its population. In India rapid growth of population, poverty, urbanization, industrialization and several related factors are responsible for the rapid degradation of the environment. Environmental problems have become serious in many part of the country and can no longer be neglected. The main environmental problems in Indian, relate to air and water pollution particularly in the metropolitan and industrial zones, degradation of common property resource which affect the poor adversely due to a degradation of their life support system, threat to biodiversity and inadequate system of solid wastes disposal and sanitation with consequent adverse impact on health, infant mortality and birth rate. A recent two weeks (3rd to 15th Nov. 2016) air polluted Delhi weather condition speaks and represents much more. Key words: Implication, worst, pollution, urbanisation,, strategy.

Industrial pollution in the sub-soil water and its health effects: A preliminary study around Buddha Nullah, Punjab

In the unplanned urbanization and industrialization process, aquatic resources are being used as dumping grounds for sewage, industrial and technological wastes. Buddha Nullah, a tributary of river Sutlej, receives the treated, partially treated and untreated toxic effluents from a multitude of industries located in Ludhiana district. Industrial pollution has been and continues to be, a major factor causing the degradation of the environment around us, affecting the water we use the air we breathe and the soil we live on .Of these, the pollution of water is arguable the most serious threat to current human welfare. The present study analyzed the effect of industrial waste discharge on the villages surrounding Buddha Nullah. The main thrust of the study is on the health status of villagers, agriculture and the livestock population.

ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION: IMPACT ON HEALTH AND ECONOMY- AN OVERVIEW STUDY

The earth is a victim of on slaughter of a materialistic civilization and industrialization. As a result there is rapid depletion of natural resources. Life on the earth being posed to severe threats, nature has started sending us warning signals in the form of droughts, floods, tsunamis, vast changes in climatic patterns, global warming, acid rains, sprawling desertification, depletion of atmospheric ozone shield and many hitherto unheard diseases.1 In the last 100 years mankind managed top destroy much of what took nature millions of years to create on the earth. At no point of time in the history of our planet has so much damage been done. Mankind has poisoned the river systems through out the world and this, in turn, has upset the ecological balance of the rivers and oceans. Trees are indiscriminately being chopped down because of the greed of man

Environment and Health In India

Proceedings of the International IUSSP Regional …, 2002

Environmental pollution is one of the serious problems faced by the people in the country. Rapid population growth, industrialization and urbanization in country are adversely affecting the environment. Though the relationship is complex, population size and growth tend to expand and accelerate these human impacts on the environment. All these in turn lead to an increase in the pollution levels. However, environmental pollution not only leads to deteriorating environmental conditions but also have adverse effects on the health of people. India is one of the most degraded environment countries in the world and it is paying heavy health and economic price for it. The present paper is an attempt to examine population growth, increasing urbanization and its influence on the environment and health of the people. The secondary analysis conducted of changes and trends over last fifty years. The analysis reveals that rapid population growth plays an important role in environmental problems of the country, from deforestation to land degradation, air and water pollution to the spread of disease. The considerable magnitude of air and water pollution pulls up the number of people suffering from respiratory and water borne diseases and many a times leading to deaths and serious health hazards. The analysis suggests that there is a urgent need to control population and environmental pollution in the country for better health of present and future generation.

THE NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION ON HEALTH

Pollution: An emergent global issue, and its impact on human health

isara solutions, 2017

It has been a remarkable increase in knowledge about different kinds of pollution and health of human. The objective of this article is to analyze the effects of different types of pollution on health of human through a review of various studies. It has been reported in many studies that atmospheric pollution has detrimental impacts on health, mainly focus on respiratory and cardiovascular outcomes. Drinking of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) contaminated water produces various water-borne diseases and also irrigation with this water affect the crop quality, which ultimately affects human health. Heavy metals and other pollutants present in soil cause toxicity of agricultural production and have a negative effect on human health. Noise pollution may results sleep disturbance and annoyance. Further studies should broaden the analysis to social and psychological aspects that influenced by pollution.
