Temperature trends, of various length, observed during the twentieth century are com- pared with a number of estimates of natural climate variability. These estimates are obtained from palaeoclimate reconstructions (some based solely on tree-ring density, others utilise multiple proxy types) and from a 1400-year unforced (control) simula- tion using the Hadley Centre's HadCM3 coupled climate model. Estimates of the 95th
