Desires Made Known: 19th and 20th European Attitudes to Competition and Violence

The 19th and 20th centuries in western civilization revealed new attitudes towards nationalism and militarism with disastrous implications for the whole of human life. In the history of ideas, investigating the writings of intellectuals, the elite, and the common man during this period has the potential for clarifying why these attitudes arose and how indelibly their influence shaped the thinking of 19th and 20th century western societies. This paper will explore societal attitudes predominantly in western and central Europe towards violence by dissecting the vacuum left by retreating societal institutions of the Middle Ages and Enlightenment. The way that Europeans largely approached and often glorified violence during this period and immediately prior will also be examined to gain closer insight into the ideologies that led nations into catastrophe.

Quiet violence, violent excesses. The dynamics of violence in a 19th-century subsistence crisis

Violence and hunger have been intertwined throughout much of human history up to the present day. Using a comprehensive definition of violence, this paper aims to investigate the interaction and dynamics of its different forms in a case study of the “last European subsistence crisis” 1. More specifically, it pertains to the 1847 food crisis and the associated wave of food riots in Germany's then largest state, the Kingdom of Prussia.

A Renaissance of Violence

2019

Based on a close examination of more than 700 homicide trials, A Renaissance of Violence exposes the deep social instability at the core of the early modern states of North Italy. Following a series of crises in the early seventeenth century, interpersonal violence in the region grew to frightening levels, despite the efforts of courts and governments to reduce social conflict. In this detailed study of violence in early modern Europe, Colin Rose shows how major crises, such as the plague of 1630, reduced the strength of social bonds among both elite and ordinary Italians. As a result, incidents of homicidal violence exploded - in small rural communities, in the crowded urban center and within tightly-knit families. Combining statistical analysis and close reading of homicide patterns, Rose demonstrates how the social contexts of violence, as much as the growth of state power, can contribute to explaining how and why interpersonal violence grew so rapidly in North Italy in the seven...

Violence, Authority, Cultures and Communities in Sussex and Kent c.1690-1760

2014

This thesis deploys both qualitative and quantitative methods to explore the role and meanings of violence within the context of Sussex and Kent in the early part of the eighteenth century. Historians have often approached the topic of violence from the perspective of a history of crime and therefore deviance. The focus has frequently been on measurements of levels and has ignored cultural contexts. In contrast, this research is grounded in experiences of violence demonstrating that it is not a uniform concept and includes a wide variety of behaviours from brawls to murder. By drawing on a range of sources it has been possible to allow the ritual and meaning of violent actions to be explored in detailed context. Quantitative data is taken from the quarter sessions records of both counties and analysed alongside the interpretations of previous historians. This is supplemented with depositions, literature, letters and notebooks to provide a 'thick description' of the contexts ...
