MBA Education: UK and Australian Schools in the Caribbean
The MBA degree is increasingly viewed as a product which has created new demand for business education in developing countries including those of the Caribbean. The purpose of this paper is to gain an understanding of the varied options for pursuing a MBA program based on the range of MBAs offered by local and foreign schools in Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean. The approach to the research involved collecting data on the MBA programs from official websites and prospectuses of the main schools, interviewing key program coordinators, and conducting a comparative analysis of the critical program elements using a matrix table. The main finding is that significant differences exist for completing an MBA depending on the choice of business school, the purpose for pursuing the qualification, and the applicability of the MBA to individual requirements. The study confirms the existence of a highly competitive arena for MBA education with the business schools striving to gain market share. In particular, the graduate business school of the local university is faced with competition from European and an Australian business schools which deliver MBA qualification through franchise arrangements with local private institutions. The finding raises questions of relevance, rigour, and applicability to local cultural and developmental needs. The value of the paper is that no such comparative study has been conducted for the emerging region of the Caribbean and the results will guide future decisions on MBA education in the respective island nations of the region.
Globalisation of MBA studies and transnational educational institutions in the Caribbean
The globalisation of higher business education supported by the growth of transnational educational institutions is now a feature of the developing countries of the Caribbean region. This paper examines the situation of Guyana where the recent discovery of hydrocarbon resources creates expectations of an economic transformation, which will generate a demand for trained personnel to manage the transition, and MBA graduates are expected to contribute significantly in this regard. Within the higher education system in Guyana, MBAs are produced mainly by the regional university and an Australian transnational institution. This study was informed as to the guiding factors in choice of MBA by the findings of a survey of current students and recent graduates of the two institutions. A comparative analysis of the competing programmes was also undertaken to provide greater insights into their capacities for generating the human resource output necessary for achieving the contemplated transformation. The subsequent phenomenon of the globalisation of higher business education was triggered by the maturing of the market in the US and the UK, and the internationalisation of curricula and use of standard learning materials (Altbach, 2004; Beverland, 2012). In this environment, the MBA gained popularity in the developing world including the Caribbean region where both local universities and foreign transnational education (TNE) institutions offer the degree. It is against this background that two specific questions are considered in this paper: Q1. Whether the MBA programmes offered in the Caribbean country of Guyana will meet the requirement for producing graduates with the level of expertise and ability to assume the challenge of managing the various institutions in the private and public sectors of Guyana? Q2. What is the key motivation of the respective students for their particular choice of programme from the MBA offerings? The Development of Executive MBA Program at Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia
The purpose of this paper is to study universities which provide executives program on Master of Management (MM) or Master of Business Administration (MBA) both in Indonesia and overseas. This paper presents a benchmarking a study to compare processes, performance, best practices between Executive MBA Institut Teknologi Bandung (MBA-ITB) and the other universities. Besides benchmarking, the authors also used customer intelligence method to gather and analyze information regarding competitors by visiting universities in Indonesia. To manage and monitor performance of Executive MBA program, we measured customer satisfaction what products or services provided by MBA-ITB meet or surpass customers (executive students) and conducted in-depth interview to explore need and demand of executive students. The results of the study help to develop executive MBA program and to adopt learning process in other universities to be followed and implemented in MBA-ITB. The acquired knowledge has been partly adapted and adopted by papers. The main implication is the need to explore how MBA-ITB can efficiently and effectively adapt and adopt such knowledge from the results. This work provides effective assistance for development of executive program in MBA-ITB embarking on this benchmarking journey. The result of customer satisfaction provides an indication of how successful MBA-ITB is at providing products and/or services to the students.
FACTORS AFFECTING STUDENTS' ENROLMENT INTO THE EXECUTIVE MBA PROGRAMME AT
The purpose of this study was to investigate factors influencing the enrollment of students into the Executive Masters of Business Administration (EMBA) Programme at Africa University in Mutare, Zimbabwe. Questionnaires were distributed to students, lecturers and administrators of the EMBA programme. The analysis showed one the factors hindering increased enrollment is cost. The fees are unaffordable given the fact that the majority of students pay from their personal savings. Moreover, there is emerging competition from other programmes offered by Africa University while other universities in Zimbabwe are offering similar programmes at a lower cost. The participant also indicated that quality of service needs to be improved and formal advertising and marketing efforts made as many participants indicated that they got to know about the programmes through informal means such as from friends.
Executive MBA Programs: What Do Students Perceive as Value for their Practices
O propósito do estudo foi investigar a percepção de alunos de MBA acerca do processo de aprendizagem gerencial. Foi realizado um trabalho de natureza exploratória e qualitativa com 160 alunos de 6 programas de MBA no Brasil, no período de 2004 a 2008. Os dados foram coletados através de questionário aplicado em atividades de grupo, o qual foi construído com objetivo de conduzir os participantes a identificarem conteúdos e experiências de aprendizagem associados ao desenvolvimento de capacidades e competências. Foi discutida a indicação de uma miríade de tecnologias pedagógicas para educadores sem que fossem considerados os conhecimentos valorizados como importantes pelos alunos. Três aspectos foram identificados como os mais relevantes na experiência de aprendizagem dos alunos de MBA: (a) abertura para explorar novos modos de interpretar o mundo; (b) desenvolvimento de capacidades específicas; e (c) desenvolvimento de competência relacional. A principal contribuição deste artigo é elucidar o engajamento ativo dos alunos nas oportunidades de aprendizagem criadas pelos educadores de MBA e os resultados alcançados no desenvolvimento de capacidades e competências. Com base nas evidências, argumenta-se que o planejamento pedagógico elaborado por educadores deve considerar os alunos de MBA como protagonistas do processo de aprendizagem gerencial.
Entrepreneurship education for Executive MBAs: the case of a Caribbean business school
Entrepreneurship courses are now a feature of the curriculum of many tertiary level management courses. While there is a growing body of research on the subject of entrepreneurship education, studies of the Executive Master of Business Administration is relatively sparse. This article offers an example of an entrepreneurship course specifically tailored to the more mature and experienced Executive Master of Business Administration participants. The curriculum offered in this paper is the result of 25 years of teaching, testing, and refining of content and learning approaches in a university setting. The argument is that the course, as currently designed, can serve as a template for courses to be conducted in business schools in similar cultural contexts and economic environments as discussed in the case.

This research paper has been prepared with a view to supporting the need to have a Master in Business Administration (MBA General) programme in a new university namely the Université des Mascareignes, Mauritius. The general perception is that MBAs are common commodity worldwide since they are provided by most tertiary institutions specialised in the business management area. The author, who is also the designer of an MBA programme for his university, undertook research in the related area to see whether there is a demand for such courses and how they could be made useful and relevant to prospective students. The research was conducted through questionnaires that initially targeted existing university students ending their undergraduate course and a few external respondents. Findings revealed that there was a strong demand for an MBA course taking into consideration that such a course should be tailor-made to the local students’ needs with courses focusing on the Mauritian context. ...

The purpose of this study is to explore factors that reinforce or obstruct business schools in Pakistan to develop managerial knowledge, skills and work-based learning experiences of MBA students. The study is prompted by growing debates about insufficiencies in business schools to prepare MBA graduates based on managerial capital needs in the regional markets. To understand the reasons of insufficiencies from business school’s viewpoint, this study employs qualitative interviews to explore factors that reinforce or obstruct business schools. Deans, faculty members and administrators of five different business schools in Hyderabad, Pakistan participated in this study. Responses of the participants are transcribed into verbatim reports and description of findings is structured in SWOT analysis format.
