Objective: To analyze the agreement between two cutoff points for physical activity (300 and 420 minutes/week) and associated factors in youth. Methods: The study enrolled 738 adolescents of Londrina city, Paraná, Southern Brazil. The following variables were collected by a self report questionnaire: presence of moderate to vigorous physical activity, gender, age, father and mother education level, with whom the adolescent lives, number of siblings, physical activity perception, participation in Physical Education classes, facilities available to physical activity practice and sedentary behavior. Prevalence of physical activity between criterions were compared using McNemar test and the agreement was analysed by Kappa index. Multivariate analysis was performed using Poisson regression with robust variance adjustment was applied. Results: The prevalence for physical activity was significantly different: 22,3% for 300 minutes/week and 12,8% for 420 minutes/week (p<0,05), but the agreement was strong (k=0,82, p<0,001). The variables gender, father education, physical activity perception and sedentary behavior were associated to physical activity in both analyzed criteria. Participation in Physical Education class and facilities available to physical activity practice were associated to physical activity only with 300 minutes/week cutoff point. Conclusion: Caution is suggested regarding cutoffs use for physical activity in epidemiological studies, considering they can result in differences in prevalence of physical activity and its associated factors.

DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/1980-0037.2016v18n5p577 The practice of leisure physical activity represents a behavior that must be monitored in different population groups. The objectives of this study were i) to compare the prevalence of leisure-time physical activity in university students along the survey years in three separate years; ii) to analyze the factors associated with practice of leisure time physical activity in each survey. Three surveys in a college institution in northeastern Brazil in 2010, 2012 and 2014 were carried out. The dependent variable was practice of leisure-time physical activity. Exploratory variables were sociodemographic factors and link with the university. The prevalence was compared using the chi-square test for linear trend and association for Prevalence Ratio. Participation was of 1,084, 1,085 and 1,041 college students in 2010, 2012 and 2014, respectively. The prevalence of leisure-time physical activity was approximately 50% in the three surve...

DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/1980-0037.2017v19n2p174 The aim of this study was to analyze the contribution of physical activity (PA) and sedentary time (ST) to Body Mass Index (BMI) in adults. The study was conducted in 2009, in Curitiba, Parana, Brazil with adults aged 18-65 years (1,411). A multidimensional questionnaire was used in which BMI, weekly minutes of PA and ST were obtained from self-reports. PA and ST were combined to determine the following independent variables: a) “active and not sedentary”; b) “active and sedentary”; c) “not active and not sedentary” and d) “not active and sedentary”. Multinomial logistic regressions were used to test the associations between PA, ST and BMI. The adjusted regression model showed that PA, regardless of ST, lowered the likelihood of participants being classified as obese by 34% and 55%, respectively. In addition, PA at recommended levels (≥150 minutes/week), while not being sedentary, lowered by 85% the likelihood of being classifie...
The Effects of Sport on the Body Measure from Students of Different Disciplines
2000
SUMMARY Problems arising from excessive body weight may be overcome. Sport emerges to take a great part in this respect. This paper shows how human body is affected by sport. The individuals were selected from the students of two different disciplines. The body measure of students totaling to 200,, was then compared to those of the same number of students, who

Introduction: Scientific evidence suggests that schoolchildren's quality of life is directly related to their physical fitness (PF). Objective: To analyze the physical fitness of elementary school students according to age, sex, body mass index (BMI) and level of physical activity (PA). Materials and methods: Cross-sectional and descriptive study conducted in 103 schoolchildren (aged 8-12 years) from Spain. PF and PA were measured using the ALPHA-fitness test battery and the Physician-based Assessment and Counseling for Exercise instrument, respectively. Participants were classified according to their level of PA (physically inactive vs. physically active) and their BMI (normal weight vs. overweight-obese). Parametric statistics were used for data analysis. Results: Male participants had a better level of PF. In addition, it was found that PF slightly increases as age increases, regardless of the sex. Normal weight or physically active schoolchildren had better aerobic capacity and a healthier body composition. Conclusion: Keeping optimal PF levels at any stage of life requires adopting a healthy lifestyle since childhood; therefore, it is necessary to encourage schoolchildren to do physical activity on their own.

2022
In Brazil, bodily practices and physical activity (BPPA) have come a long way, with the implementation of policies, actions and programs that have substantially contributed to public health. However, recent setbacks, in which political instability, scarcity and cuts in public spending predominate, show that more progress and consolidation in the National Health System (SUS) are still needed. Thus, the objective of this article is to demonstrate the aspects that must be considered for promoting BPPA in primary health care, discussing its complexity and multifactorial nature, aimed at health professionals, especially in physical education. In conclusion, essential aspects were highlighted, ranging from the struggle to defend and advance public policies that encourage the promotion and consolidation of the BPPA, to theories that help understand the dimensions of human behavior.
