An Infinite-Dimensional Discrete-Time Representation for Periodic Systems
IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1998
This note deals with the representation of continuous-time periodic systems as discrete-time invariant systems in state-space form using the lifting technique. More precisely, we derive an infinite-dimensional state equation on a Hilbert space for continuous-time periodically time-varying systems and characterize the structure of the spectrum of the discrete semigroup generator. On montre que la dynamique des systemes periodiques est decrite par une equation aux differences du premier ordre sur un espace Hilbertien et on caracterise la structure du spectre du g€merateur de semigroupe discret.
Multidimensional Systems and Signal Processing
We consider discrete behaviors with varying coefficients. Our results are new also for one-dimensional systems over the time-axis of natural numbers and for varying coefficients in a field, we derive the results, however, in much greater generality: Instead of the natural numbers we use an arbitrary submonoid N of an abelian group, for instance the standard multidimensional lattice of r-dimensional vectors of natural numbers or integers. We replace the base field by any commutative self-injective ring F, for instance a direct product of fields or a quasi-Frobenius ring or a finite factor ring of the integers. The F-module W of functions from N to F is the canonical discrete signal module and is a left module over the natural associated noncommutative ring A of difference operators with variable coefficients. Our main result states that this module is injective and therefore satisfies the fundamental principle: An inhomogeneous system of linear difference equations with variable coef...
Discrete linear Algebraic Dynamical Systems
arXiv (Cornell University), 2012
The vector space of the multi-indexed sequences over a field and the vector space of the sequences with finite support are dual to each other, with respect to a scalar product, which we used to define orthogonals in these spaces. The closed subspaces in the first vector space are then the orthogonals of subsets in the second space. Using power series and polynomials, we prove that the polynomial operator in the shift which U. Oberst and J. C. Willems have introduced to define time invariant discrete linear dynamical systems is the functorial adjoint of the polynomial multiplication. These results are generalized to the case of vectors of sequences and vectors of power series and polynomials. We end this paper by describing discrete linear algebraic dynamical systems.
Time-invariant representation of discrete periodic systems
Automatica, 1996
large number of results from linear timeinvariant system theory can be extended to periodic systems provided an equivalent time-invariant system can be found. This paper presents a simple and numerically reliable procedure to achieve the same. It is shown that, using a stacked representation of periodic systems, under system equivalence, a minimal-order generalized state-space description can always be obtained.
Fundamental equivalence of discrete-time AR representations
International Journal of Control, 2003
We examine the problem of equivalence of discrete time auto-regressive (AR) representations. Two AR representations are defined as fundamentally equivalent if their solution spaces or behaviors are isomorphic. Starting from the fact that the behavior of an AR representation, when considered over a finite time interval, depends on the algebraic structure of both the finite and the infinite elementary divisors of the underlying polynomial matrix we examine closely this structure and show that it can be easily exposed through the corresponding structure of a block companion matrix pencil which can be easily constructed from the coefficients of the original matrix. As a consequence the proposed block companion matrix pencil constitutes the natural first-order fundamentally equivalent representation (realization) of such an AR representation. As a further consequence and generalization we show that two AR representations described by polynomial matrices of possibly different degrees and dimensions that give rise to fundamentally equivalent first-order representations are fundamentally equivalent.
Hilbert Space Formulation of Symbolic Systems for Signal Representation and Analysis⋆
Probabilistic finite state automata (PFSA) have been widely used as an analysis tool for signal representation and modeling of physical systems. This paper presents a new method to address these issues by bringing in the notion of vector-space formulation of symbolic systems in the setting of PFSA. In this context, a link is established between the formal language theory and functional analysis by defining an inner product space over a class of stochastic regular languages, represented by PFSA models that are constructed from finite-length symbol sequences. The norm induced by the inner product is interpreted as a measure of the information contained in the respective PFSA. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the computational steps in the proposed method and to demonstrate model order reduction via orthogonal projection from a general Hilbert space of PFSA onto a (closed) Markov subspace that belongs to a class of shifts of finite type. These concepts are validated by analyzing time series of ultrasonic signals, collected from an experimental apparatus, for fatigue damage detection in polycrystalline alloys.
