Interaction Aesthetics - In an Beyond the Flow

Diseña 15, 2019

Although almost two decades have passed since the term aesthetics of interaction made its appearance in design-oriented Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), the actual understanding of the concept remains fuzzy and focused on the description of qualities of what constitutes an aesthetic experience. However, by trying to describe specific aesthetic qualities emerging from technology encounters, we risk offering endless definitions of potential aesthetic traits, mostly fixated on pleasurable interactions. This approach may discard other interactive expressions that could potentially lead us to meaningful insights. Drawing on the similarities between John Dewey’s aesthetic experiences, Eugene Gendlin’s process model, and Martin Heidegger’s analysis of tool use, this article offers a theoretical framework towards a broader, systematized view of aesthetics of interaction. To do so, the discussion exemplifies a series of phenomenological experiences ranging from transparency to breakdown: two opposites in the understanding of how technologies reveal themselves.

Five things I believe about the aesthetics of interaction design

2008

1. It makes little sense to talk about "visual aesthetics" as an isolated modality. 2. The genre determines the aesthetic qualities. 3. Aesthetic is not equal to good, pleasant, pretty, or nice. 4. Aesthetic experience is connected with intellectual deliberation as much as with immediate, "visceral" response. 5. We need holistic, interpretative approaches to dealing with aesthetics in interaction design. These five beliefs are introduced and substantiated by means of examples and argumentation.

Towards a Philosophy of Interaction Design

2005

This paper focuses on the elements required for developing an interaction design framework based on Media Philosophy. For this purpose it is needed to deconstruct the presuppositions of HCI design. Following this the author suggests a re-definition of design, knowing, that design funnels the functioning code, that supplies the society with values and goals, but most importantly, that creates relations, which bring us emotions and experiences. The author argues, that by discerning the most important values it is possible to develop an effective and meaningful design method, so as to bring into the interaction an added value. It is also argued, that the current idea of desktop computers is non-functional for most of the intended purposes. It is therefore suggested to make the computer invisible in our life-world. However, this presupposes making the purpose of the computer readily visible, e.g. hiding the computer in the shapes of things of daily use. This paper is based on the works of humanistic thinkers as well as practitioners from the interaction design domain to allow for a broader theoretical reflection not only of the way how computer devices operate, but above all how they act in a human environment.
