End-To-End Voip Quality Measurement

2006

SUMMARY The VoIP quality of service can be either estimated by analyzing the voice data flow characteristics, or by recording a transmitted voice probe over the whole VoIP transport chain and comparing it to the original. When the quality estimation by the voice data flow characteristics is deployed, the three most prominent degradation factors are observed – the packet loss, the packet delay and the delay variance (also called jitter). Depending on the estimation model, the values of these degradation factors are used to compute the resulting quality rating estimation. The end-to-end quality measurement provides more dependable results, however, it is also more technically and computationally demanding. We describe our experiences with both methods of quality evaluation and measurement. An experimental VPN for VoIP QoS measurements was created and a voice probe was sent through this network while end-to-end quality and degradation factors were observed. For end-to-end measurements ...

On improving the quality of VoIP connections

Collection of selected papers of the IV International Conference on Information Technology and Nanotechnology

Improving the quality of VoIP connections is a very important goal in the area of telecommunications. The proportion of multimedia traffic in relation to the total traffic supported by providers is constantly increasing. To identify and troubleshoot issues with VoIP connections, network providers need both criteria and a methodology for assessing connection quality. We offer a methodology for assessing the quality of VoIP connections. A comparative analysis of VoIP codecs is also made.

Reference model for VoIP Quality

Jitter buffers in IP phones have various mechanisms for jitter elimination. To measure how effective these implementations are, we need to compare quality mea-sured using IP phone to default quality for each jitter that could occur in real IP network. Reference model specifying the default quality for each jitter does not exist so far, therefore we present this idea in this paper, where we present the methodology that will be used in the future. In this paper we discuss only the worst possible scenario, where the input flow to the jitter buffer is by modelled by Poisson distribution.
