Knowledge on primary and secondary prevention of asthma among caregivers of asthmatic children admitted to paediatric wards in Gampaha District

Journal of the College of Community Physicians of Sri Lanka

Introduction: Asthma is considered to be one of the major public health problems. The accurate knowledge of caregiver on asthma is important for the management. Objectives: To describe the knowledge on primary and secondary prevention of asthma among caregivers of asthmatic children admitted to the paediatric wards in the district of Gampaha Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among 577 caregivers of inward asthmatic children. Pre-tested interviewer-and self-administered questionnaires were used to assess the knowledge on asthma. The grand score of knowledge on asthma was calculated out of 34. The 75 th percentile value was considered to differentiate 'good' knowledge from 'poor' knowledge. Multiple logistic regression was applied to determine the factors associated with poor knowledge on asthma. Results were expressed in adjusted odds ratio (aOR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: The mean score for knowledge on asthma was 20.6 (SD=4.42) ranging from 7 to 30. Among the caregivers, 369 (64%) had poor knowledge on asthma. Low educational level of the caregiver (aOR=2.48; 95% CI=1.59, 3.86) and being under prophylaxis treatment for less than one year (aOR=2.49; 95% CI=1.50, 4.13) were the determinants of poor knowledge on asthma. Conclusions: Majority of the caregivers' knowledge on asthma was poor. The caregivers' low educational level and shorter duration of prophylaxis treatment for the children were associated with poor knowledge on asthma.

Asthma prevalence and the relationship between level of knowledge and quality of life among asthmatic schoolchildren in Malaysia

Saudi Medical Journal, 2022

Objectives: To examine asthma prevalence and the relationship between the level of knowledge and quality of life (QoL) among asthmatic secondary school children aged 13-14 years old in Malaysia. Methods: A cross-sectional design was employed. Data was collected through a self-administered questionnaire containing demographic characteristics, asthma symptoms, knowledge on asthma, and QoL. Results: Data from 2891 asthmatic schoolchildren aged 13-14 years old from secondary schools in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, were analyzed. According to the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) scoring for asthma prevalence, the number of children who exhibited signs and symptoms of asthma was 9% (n=260). The mean score for total knowledge indicated a low knowledge level (82.7%). No significant relationship was found between knowledge level and QoL. Only the race factor was associated with asthma knowledge. Conclusion: This study has provided valuable information on asthma prevalence among Malaysian adolescents and their knowledge on asthma condition. Further research should explore the correlation factors of asthma knowledge and QoL.

Levels of knowledge about asthma of parents of asthmatic children

Einstein (Sao Paulo, Brazil), 2018

To evaluate the levels of knowledge about asthma of parents of school children. A cross-sectional study was carried out with parents of children with medical diagnosis of asthma (mild, moderate and severe), followed up at an outpatient referral center for childhood asthma in the Southern region of Brazil (Asthma Group). Parents of children with asthma in remission and healthy children were also selected (Control Group). The Newcastle Asthma Knowledge Questionnaire (NAKQ) questionnaire was applied in both groups. A total of 154 parents of children participated in the study; in that, 62 (40.26%) in the Asthma Group, and 92 (59.74%) in the Control Group, with a mean age of 35.60±10.03 years. Of these, 132 (85.7%) were female, and 72 (46.8%) parents studied up to high school. The average score of level of knowledge was 18.06±4.11 points. Only 30.5% parents had acceptable levels of knowledge about asthma, which were more prevalent in the Asthma Group than in the Control Group (41.9% vers...

Parental Asthma-Related Knowledge and Asthma Control in their Children in Accra, Ghana

Texila International Journal of Public Health, 2024

Asthma ranks among the top 20 chronic conditions for the global ranking of disability-adjusted life years in children and is the most prevalent chronic condition in children. In the mid-childhood ages of 5–14 years, it is among the top 10 causes. Parental asthma knowledge is a crucial influencer of management practices and disease control. To achieve guided self-management, education is one of the six essential features. Assessing parents' asthma-related knowledge (ARK) is a significant requirement for improving childhood asthma management. The primary objective of this study was to document the ARK of parents of children (0-18 years) with asthma and identify how their knowledge impacts the control of the medical condition in their children in Accra, Ghana. A short questionnaire was designed and implemented to gather relevant information for the study. We also determined the number of children using an asthma action plan. A total of 200 questionnaires were administered. The median age of the children in the study was 10.7 years, with a mean age of 10.0 years. Seventy-one per cent of the children were males. This variation is based on the standard population, where asthma in boys is nearly twice as significant as in girls before age 14. Asthma educators should pay attention to the level of education of the parents of asthmatic children. The result indicates a higher level of asthma control in children whose parents have a higher level of education. However, it is concerning that only 17.2% of children had an asthma action plan, highlighting the urgent need for action in this area.

Knowledge and perceptions on childhood asthma among care-takers of children with asthma at a National Referral Hospital in Western Kenya: a descriptive study

African Health Sciences

Background: Identifying knowledge gaps in asthma self-management and identifying existing myths is an important step in determining appropriate health education and demystifying the myths so as to enhance asthma control. Objective: To identify existing knowledge gaps and perceptions among the caregivers of asthmatic children. Methods: A cross sectional study was done among caretakers of asthmatic children aged 6-11 years at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. Data on knowledge and perceptions among caretakers was collected using a questionnaire. Results: A total of 116 caretakers were recruited of whom 71.6% were mothers. Although 60% of the caretakers had asthma medications at home, only a third felt their children were asthmatic. Eighty four (72.4%) had basic asthma knowledge. Syrups were preferred to inhalers by 70.7%, with 64.7% believing that inhalers were for the very sick. Only 36 (31%) felt preventer medications in asthma were necessary. Acceptance of asthma as a diagnosis and presence of asthma drugs were significantly associated with better knowledge of asthma, p-values 0.015 and 0.009 respectively. Conclusion: Most caregivers perceive syrups to be better despite having good basic knowledge on asthma. There is need to address asthma perceptions among caretakers in resource poor settings which is likely to improve control.

Effects of an Asthma Education Camp Program on Quality of Life and Asthma Control among Thai Children with Asthma: A Quasi-Experimental Study

Healthcare

Caregiver knowledge and management ability can improve asthma control and quality of life (QoL) among children with asthma. A quasi-experimental study was proposed to assess the effect of a 1 day educational camp program on the QoL of children with asthma and on their caregivers’ asthma knowledge and management. Children with asthma and their caregivers were invited to attend a camp. The Pediatric Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (PAQLQ), Childhood Asthma Control Test score, and forced expiratory volume in 1 s were assessed in children at the first, 3 month, 6 month, and 1 year visits. The caregiver’s knowledge, attitudes, and practice (KAP) survey was assessed at each visit. A total of 212 patients were enrolled (mean age: 8.56 ± 1.63 years) but only 72 patients attended the camp. There was no significant difference in baseline characteristics, asthma severity, or asthma risk factors between camp attendees and non-attendees. The KAP of caregivers who attended the camp was signi...

A study on effectiveness of an educational package on knowledge of mothers of asthmatic children on bronchial asthma

An evaluative study was conducted to determine the level of knowledge of mothers of asthmatic children on asthma and to determine the effectiveness of an educational package in terms of improvement in knowledge of mothers. A quasi experimental pretest posttest control group design was used. Purposive sampling technique was employed to select the subjects and they were randomized into either the experimental or control group using block randomization. Each group consisted of 40 mothers who fulfilled the sampling criteria. Baseline characteristics and a structured knowledge questionnaire on asthma were used to collect data. The findings of the study revealed that the difference from pretest to posttest knowledge scores in the experimental and control group was statistically significant (F = 444.35, p<0.01) and the difference between the experimental and control group was statistically significant (F= 223.663, p< 0.01). The Post Hoc Bonferroni test showed significant difference w...

Association of Asthma Control With Caregivers' Knowledge and Practices for Children With Asthma in the Tabuk Region of Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Study

Cureus, 2023

Asthma is a chronic heterogeneous inflammatory disease that affects millions of individuals around the globe. Standardized asthma management is crucial to maintain and control the disease. Caregivers are the leading players in managing asthma during childhood. Studies are lacking in the Tabuk region. The aim of this study was to elucidate knowledge levels and common practices of caregivers of pediatric patients with asthma in the Tabuk region of Saudi Arabia and its impact on asthma control. A validated cross-sectional survey of the population of the Tabuk region was conducted from July 1, 2022, to September 30, 2022. Convenience sampling via an internet-based questionnaire within the study area was deployed, followed by phone interviews. A total of 393 caregivers completed the questionnaire, and the data were analyzed. The median age of asthmatic children was nine years, and most of them were males (60.8%). Most caregivers had a higher education (62.1%). The symptoms of allergic rhinitis were found in almost 80% of children. Pulmonary function tests were performed in 42.5% of children, and only one-third underwent radioallergosorbent (RAST) skin testing. About half the children had an asthmatic attack and an emergency department visit once during the previous 12 months, and most were hospitalized during that period. Most caregivers showed good knowledge (score=7) about symptoms of asthma and factors that could worsen the child's asthma, as well as good asthma control practices (score ≥7). Children with poorly controlled asthma were younger, had significant allergic rhinitis symptoms (30%), and underwent pulmonary function tests (60%). In the Tabuk region, the extent of asthma control was significantly associated with caregivers' knowledge and practices for children with asthma. Future public education campaigns should focus on closing the observed knowledge and practice gaps to reduce the impact of childhood asthma.

Proportion of Asthma Patients with Accurate Knowledge About Asthma Control in a Rural Community, Thailand

Journal of Southwest Jiaotong University, 2021

Asthma is a controllable disease. Poor asthma symptom control increased the risk of exacerbation. Accurate knowledge about asthma control can reduce risk behaviors, enhance good symptom control, and result in a minimal exacerbation. This study aimed to assess accurate knowledge about asthma control and factor related among asthma patients in a rural community. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 786 asthma patients using a simple random sampling method. Questionnaires were used, comprising two parts: socio-demographic and knowledge about asthma control. Data were collected by well-trained university student interviewers using the local language and then analyzed using frequency, percentage, independent sample t-test, ANOVA, multiple linear regression, and 95% CI. The response rate was 92.36% (726/786). This study found that 49.4.0% (359/367) (95% CI:45.75, 53.15) of asthma patients had accurate knowledge about asthma control. The most accurate knowledge referred ...
