Developing An Achievement Test for Fraction Teaching: Validity and Reliability Analysis

ITM Web of Conferences, 2017

The aim of the study is to develop an achievement test that can be used to measure the achievement status of elementary school 4th grader students in terms of their fractions learning in mathematics courses. Examining the literature, it is visible that there are 8 development stages of the achievement test.. ITEMAN 3.5 package software was employed to analyze the validity and reliability of the test. Statistical analysis of the test reveals that KR-20 Internal Consistency and KR-21 Internal Consistency are 0.90. This value indicates that the consistency of the test is high. The average discrimination of the test is 0.80, which indicates that the test is highly distinctive among students. The average strength of the test has been calculated as 0.67. Therefore, it has been determined that the test should be both easy and distinctive when it comes to measuring the effectiveness of the teaching method. The result of the analysis suggest that when consistency and distinctiveness values are considered, the developed test is not only easy to use but also highly distinctive. Finally, it has been discovered that the academic achievement test for fraction teaching is valid and reliable.

Development of three-tier diagnostic test instruments for detecting students’ conception

Journal of Physics: Conference Series, 2019

A research and developmental study about developing three tier test instrument was carried out to detect students’ conception on cell concept. Students’ pre-conception about cell concept, cell reproduction and gametogenesis are often not in line with scientific concepts. This preliminary study was conducted to analyze the profile of students’ pre-conception about cell reproduction in senior high schools. Modified Borg and Gall’s R&D research design used in this research. Instrument development resulted in three tier diagnostic test in the form of 30 multiple choice test items with its reason and certainty index. To validate the instrument, it was administered towards a number of senior high school students (XI and XII graders) in Bandung. Then the response of the students were quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed. Research findings show that the instrument as product is effective to determine students’ conception, including their misconception. The percentage of misconception f...

Ortaokul öğrencilerine yönelik Matematiksel Yaratıcılık Testi’nin (MYT) geliştirilmesi

Turkish Journal of Education

This study presents the development of a mathematical creativity test and exploration of its psychometric properties. The study was conducted in six public schools and a high ability center between 2015 and 2018. The sample of the study included 1129 middle school students. The Mathematical Creativity Test (MCT) consists of problem posing, making conjecture, and proof subtests. Each test has two items. The scores of the MCT are composed of fluency, flexibility, and creativity quotient. For construct validity, EFA yielded a 3-factor solution, namely, problem posing, making conjecture, and proof subtests. CFA confirmed the 3-factor solution, and all fit indices were found to be good. For criterion validity, one-way ANOVA for independent samples was conducted in different classes, and it showed that there was a significant difference, and Pearson's correlation coefficient was investigated between MCT scores and the report card grades of the mathematics lesson. There was a strong an...

Percepção e desempenho acadêmico do test-Taker no uso do método de pontuação de teste de eliminação de número numérico com ponderação de confiança (CWNRET) no teste de múltipla escolha

2019

The most common assessment tool in Higher Education and in most licensure examinations in the Philippines is the multiple-choice (MC) test. Thus, it is appropriate to device a tool on how teachers can help their students to analyze the items in an MC test better. The aim of this study is to determine the perception and test scores of the students in using Confidence-Weighted Number Right Elimination Testing (CWNRET) compared to Number Right (NR) and Number Right Elimination Testing (NRET) scoring method in answering an MC test. The researcher developed the Test-taker's Perception Inventory for the purpose of this study. Based on the results, this study showed that, generally, the perception of the students who used CWNRET is not significantly different from the perception of the students in using NRET and NR scoring methods. However, there is a significant increase in the students’ perception on their need to give extra effort when CWNRET scoring method is used in answering an M...

Fraction decision confusion – a case study among 13-year old students / Noraini Noordin, Fadzilah Abdol Razak and Nooraini Ali

2011

If one uses mental computation in an estimation procedure, there will be a previous selection of simple numbers to be operated on mentally. This choice of numbers will bring about approximate answers, thus, this implies that a close relationship exists between estimation and mental computation. A study was conducted in 2010 on 385 students from four selected colleges in the North Zone of Malaysia to assess the estimation and computation abilities of 13-year old students. These students had prior exposure to fractions at primary schools. Students were asked to respond to items on a Computation Test and an Estimation Test followed by a Probing Interview. The Computation and Estimation Tests have similar stem items. Analysis of the responses to the Computation and Estimation Tests was done using Rasch Measurement Model. Among issues investigated in the study was fraction confusion decision. This paper discusses the estimation problems student face when they compare fractions to another number. Items 2, 3 and 6 on the Computation Test were selected for analysis. Responses to all these three items demonstrated that majority of the students were able to convert fractions to decimal numbers, and vice versa. Majority of the selected students were also able to demonstrate their computational estimation ability by using prior knowledge on counting on or counting back sequence to decide which among the given decimal numbers in Item 3 was larger than 4 150/1000. However, responses to Items 2 and 6 indicated that students were confused. This impeded their judgments in deciding which among the given improper fractions in Item 2 was nearest to 10, and which among the given sums of fractions in Item 6 was nearest to 5. In terms of hierarchy of difficulty, Item 6 caused the most confusion to the students.
