Thermal Energy Storage System Using Phase Change Material: A Review
2016
Thermal energy storage (TES) is becoming a growing concern in modern technology and it has number of applications. Energy storage is essential whenever there is a mismatch between the supply and consumption of energy. Growing energy demands, lack of fossil increase in the level of greenhouse gas emissions are the main driving forces to practice various sources of renewable energy. Due to irregular and unpredictable nature of solar energy; efficient, economical and reliable solar th Among the different possibilities to store energy, systems using Phase Change Materials (PCM) can be preferred for its consistency in latent heat storage. The use of PCM is an effective way of thermal energy and has the advantages of having high storage density and the isothermal nature of the storage process. Due to this, the volume of material is reduces and so the cost of the system. But the PCM storage system has low thermal conducti enhancement techniques should be used. This paper summarise the sele...

A Review on Viability of Thermal Energy Storage and Phase Change Material
The thermal energy storage is the transitory saving of high-temperature or low-temperature energy to use later. It connects the gap amid the demands and actual energy use. The used thermal storage may include many hours' storage cycles which depend on the systems requirements design. Whereas the output constantly thermal, while the input may be either electrical or thermal. The PCM is a product that saves and releases thermal energy through melting and freezing process. When those material freezing, it will release a large amount of energy in form latent heat of fusion. Conversely, when the material is melted, an equal amount of energy is absorbed from surrounding when it converts from solid to liquid phase. In practice, many research and development activities related to energy have been concentrated on efficient energy use and energy savings, leading to energy conservation. Thermal storage has been characterized as a kind of thermal battery. So this paper emphasized on the capability of thermal energy storage system and its viability.
Analysis of Thermal Energy Storage system using Paraffin Wax as Phase Change Material
A significant amount of heat is wasted in electricity general, manufacturing, chemical and industrial process. Recovery and reuse of this energy through storage can be useful in conservation of energy and meeting the peak demands of power. A shell and spiral type heat exchanger has been designed and fabricated for low temperature industrial waste heat recovery using phase change material. Paraffin wax (Melting Point 54 o C) was used as storage media due to its low cost and large-scale availability in Indian market. Experiments were performed for different mass flow rates and inlet temperature of heat transfer fluid for recovery and use of waste heat. The effect of mass flow rate on the performance of the system was studied. Calculations for overall heat transfer during charging (melting of PCM) and discharging (solidification of PCM) and heat discharging efficiency were also made.
Thermal Performance of the Thermal Storage Energy with Phase Change Material
Acta Mechanica et Automatica
Values of energy supply and demand vary within the same timeframe and are not equal. Consequently, to minimise the amount of energy wasted, there is a need to use various types of energy storing systems. Recently, one can observe a trend in which phase change materials (PCM) have gained popularity as materials that can store an excess of heat energy. In this research, the authors analysed paraffin wax (cheese wax)’s capability as a PCM energy storing material for a low temperature energy-storage device. Due to the relatively low thermal conductivity of wax, the authors also analysed open-cell ceramic Al2O3/SiC composite foams’ (in which the PCM was dispersed) influence on heat exchange process. Thermal analysis on paraffin wax was performed, determining its specific heat in liquid and solid state, latent heat (LH) of melting, melting temperature and thermal conductivity. Thermal tests were also performed on thermal energy container (with built-in PCM and ceramic foams) for transient...
Thermal Energy Storage by Phase Change Material
Solar energy is a renewable energy source that can generate electricity, provide hot water, heat and cool a house and provide lighting for buildings. In response to increasing electrical energy costs, thermal storage technology has recently been developed. This paper presents an introduction to previous works on thermal energy storage using PCM and their applications. The choice of the substances used largely depends upon the temperature level of the application. Phase change material (PCM) are one of the latent heat materials having low temperature range and high energy density of melting– solidification compared to the sensible heat storage. Latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) with phase change materials (PCMs) deserves attention as it provides high energy density and small temperature change interval upon melting/solidifying. Phase change materials (PCMs) are becoming more and more attractive for space heating and cooling in buildings, solar applications, off-peak energy storage, and heat exchanger improvements. Latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) offers a huge opportunity to reduce fuel dependency and environmental impact created by fossil fuel consumption.
A STUDY ON PHASE CHANGE MATERIAL BASED THERMAL ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM
The present work focused on experimental evaluation of the thermal performance of different latent heat storage materials. In latent heat storage (LHS) system phase change materials (PCM's) are used as storage material. In this work two PCM'S such as Sodium Acetate Trihydrate (CH 3 COONa-3H 2 O) and Sodium Thiosulphate Pentahydrate (Na 2 S 2 O 3 5H 2 O) are used as PCM and it is filled in spherical capsule which has high heat transfer capacity. The experimental setup consist of a tank and spherical balls which contain PCM. The experiments are conducted according to Taguchi design. By charging the PCM with hot water and discharging the water at the outlet .The discharge time for each experiment is recorded by repeating the test for two PCM's and also test has been conducted without PCM(only water). The results are compared and it is found that Sodium acetate trihydrate is the best PCM which preserve heat for longer period than Sodium thiosulphate pent hydrate. Finally regression equation is developed for discharging and solved by using PSO(paticle swarm optimization) algorithm.
