AN ENERGY-BASED HYSTERESIS MODEL FOR MAGNETOSTRICTIVE
This paper addresses the modeling of hysteresis in magnetostrictive transducers. This is considered in the context of control applications which require an accurate characterization of the relation between input currents and strains output by the transducer. This relation typically exhibits signi cant nonlinearities and hysteresis due to inherent properties of magnetostrictive materials. The characterization considered here is based upon the Jiles-Atherton mean eld model for ferromagnetic hysteresis in combination with a quadratic moment rotation model for magnetostriction. As demonstrated through comparison with experimental data, the magnetization model very adequately quanti es both major and minor loops under various operating conditions. The combined model can then be used to accurately characterize output strains at moderate drive levels. The advantages to this model lie in the small number (six) of required parameters and the exibility it exhibits in a variety of operating conditions. i
The role of material parameters and mechanical stresses on magnetic and magnetostrictive hysteresis
Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 1999
The proposed micromagnetic model (Voltairas et al., Int. J. Engng. Sci., accepted for publication) is extended to account for shearing strains. We assume that the ferromagnetic material is a single cubic crystal, the magnetization reverses coherently and the strains are uniform. The equilibrium "eld equations are derived from the free energy functional. The role of the material parameters and the applied stresses (inverse magnetostriction ewect) on the magnetization and magnetostriction curves is examined in detail. (C.V. A method for the determination of the parameters of the hysteresis model of magnetic materials
IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, 1994
Many methods have been proposed for the determination of the hysteresis loops of magnetic materials, and many mathematical approaches have been proposed to find a good model for the hysteresis phenomenon. However, very few attempts have been made to determine the parameters of the hysteresis model experimentally. This paper will show how, starting from a digital method for the experimental determination of the hysteresis loop under different maximum induction values, the parameters of a hysteresis model can be automatically estimated with good accuracy.
A8.1 - A Preisach Based Model for the Characterisation of Magnetic Hysteresis
Proceedings Sensor 2009 Volume Ii, 2009
In this paper we present a model for hysteretic nonlinearities with non-local memories. This model can be used to describe hysteretic material behavior. Common applications are ferromagnetic or ferroelectric materials. Our model consists of an analytic function and a Preisach operator. Furthermore, we define a new Preisach weight function and introduce a method for the identification of the model parameters. Altogether, five parameters define the weight function and another two parameters are needed for the analytic function. With these seven parameters the model can be adapted very well to measured material curves. The model parameters are customized to a set of symmetric hysteresis curves of a soft magnetic material. After that, non-symmetric curves like the virgin curve are predicted very well by the model. It is especially useful, if forced magnetization, that appears beyond technical saturation, plays a role.
Identification and compensation of Preisach hysteresis models for magnetostrictive actuators
Physica B: Condensed Matter, 2001
The paper proposes the identification and compensation of the hysteretic behavior of an actuator constituted by a Terfenol-D magnetostrictive material. Hysteresis is modeled by applying the classical Preisach model whose identification procedure is performed by the adoption of both a fuzzy approximator and a feed-forward neural network. This allows to analytically reconstruct either Everett integrals and the Preisach distribution function, without any special smoothing of the measured data, owing to the filtering capabilities of the neuro-fuzzy interpolators. The idea of pseudo-compensator is introduced for compensation of hysteresis and nonlinearity of a magnetostrictive actuator. r
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2008
This paper deals with the development of a modeling approach for describing the magnetomechanical behavior of magnetostrictive actuators. The model couples the finite element solution, accounting for eddy currents in the magnetic materials, with a modified Preisach-type model, identified starting from the static characterization of the magnetoelastic material. The model is applied to the dynamic analysis of a Terfenol-D actuator under ac and biased supply conditions, comparing the results with experiments, and focusing the investigation on the dynamic characteristics of the device.
Modeling and control of hysteresis in magnetostrictive actuators
Automatica, 2004
A novel dynamic model is proposed for the hysteresis in magnetostrictive actuators by coupling a Preisach operator to an ordinary di erential equation, and a parameter identiÿcation method is described. An e cient inversion algorithm for a class of Preisach operators with piecewise uniform density functions is then introduced, based upon which an inverse control scheme for the dynamic hysteresis model is presented. Finally the inversion error is quantiÿed and l1 control theory is applied to improve the robustness of inverse compensation. Simulation and experimental results based on a Terfenol-D actuator are provided.
Control of hysteresis: theory and experimental results
Smart Structures and Materials 2001: Modeling, Signal Processing, and Control in Smart Structures, 2001
Hysteresis in smart materials hinders the wider applicability of such materials in actuators. In this paper, a systematic approach for coping with hysteresis is presented. The method is illustrated through the example of controlling a commercially available magnetostrictive actuator. We utilize the low-dimensional model for the magnetostrictive actuator that was developed in earlier work. For low frequency inputs, the model approximates to a rate-independent hysteresis operator, with current as its input and magnetization as its output. Magnetostrictive strain is proportional to the square of the magnetization. In this paper, we use a classical Preisach operator for the rate-independent hysteresis operator. In this paper, we present the results of experiments conducted on a commercial magnetostrictive actuator, the purpose of which was the control of the displacement/strain output. A constrained least-squares algorithm is employed to identify a discrete approximation to the Preisach measure. We then discuss a nonlinear inversion algorithm for the resulting Preisach operator, based on the theory of strictly-increasing operators. This algorithm yields a control input signal to produce a desired magnetostrictive response. The effectiveness of the inversion scheme is demonstrated via an open-loop trajectory tracking experiment.
