A new procedure model for verification and validation in production and logistics simulation

Verification & Validation of simulation models and results has been strongly investigated in the context of defence applications. Significantly less substantial work can be found for applications for production and logistics, which is surprising when taking into account the massive impact that wrong or inadequate simulation results can have on strategic and investment-related decisions for large production and logistics systems. The authors have, therefore, founded an expert group for this specific topic in the year 2003, which has analysed the existing material and then developed proposals for definitions, overviews on existing V&V techniques, practical hints for the documentation of the procedural steps within a simulation study, and a specific procedure model for V&V in the context of simulation for production and logistics. The results of this working group are available as a textbook, in German. This paper summarises major results.

Verification and Validation (V&V) of simulation models have been strongly investigated in the context of defense applications. Significantly less substantial work can be found for applications in production and logistics, which is surprising when taking into account the massive impact that wrong or inadequate simulation results can have on strategic and investment-related decisions for large production and logistics systems. The authors have, therefore, founded an expert group for this specific topic in the year 2003. The major result of this expert group was the development of a specific procedure model for V&V in the context of simulation for production and logistics, which was documented in a book (in German) and summarized in a paper at the WSC'2008. This paper explains details of the approach, discussing the criteria to be applied when assessing the validity of a model, and providing examples how to conduct V&V with reference to these criteria.

Verification and Validation (V&V) of simulation models and results are very important parts of discrete event simulation studies for production and logistics applications, as wrong or inadequate simulation results can have massive impact on strategic and investment-related decisions. The authors propose a procedure model for V&V that is applicable for simulation studies in this sector, based on a simulation procedure model that clearly defines the phases of the study and the results of each phase. This paper summarises the background of these procedure models, gives an overview on both models and then illustrates the elements of the V&V procedure model on selected examples, giving exemplary questions to be answered during the V&V and explaining the context of these questions in the framework of the procedure model.

This paper sets simulation model verification and validation (V&V) in the context of the process of performing a simulation study. Various different forms of V&V need to take place depending on the stage that has been reached. Since the phases of a study are performed in an iterative manner, so too are the various forms of V&V. A number of difficulties with verifying and validating models are discussed, after which a series of V&V methods are described. V&V is seen as a process of increasing confidence in a model, and not one of demonstrating absolute accuracy.

Developing variants of scenarios for a production enterprise's achieving a desirable fi nancial position using simulation modeling tools requires a specifi cation and verifi cation of requirements for the simulation model. Availability of such variants of scenarios allows stakeholders to select the most effi cient solution. The verifi cation is performed by business analysts and key stakeholders; the aim is to assess readiness of the requirements for fi nal approval and to check that the requirements provide all material information for future work. Verifi cation includes evaluating the requirements regarding their compliance with the company's business analysis standards, as well as assessment of the model's completeness and common terminology used for description of the requirements. Understanding the desired solution, which meets all the stakeholders' requirements, is the most important element in requirements verifi cation. For developing a simulation model, which is essential for determining variants of development scenarios and covers fi nancial fl ows of a typical production company, a list of verifi ed requirements is determined. A practical guide for operational validation of discrete simulation models

As the number of simulation experiments increases, the necessity for validation and verification of these models demands special attention on the part of the simulation practitioners. By analyzing the current scientific literature, it is observed that the operational validation description presented in many papers does not agree on the importance designated to this process and about its applied techniques, subjective or objective. With the expectation of orienting professionals, researchers and students in simulation, this article aims to elaborate a practical guide through the compilation of statistical techniques in the operational validation of discrete simulation models. Finally, the guide's applicability was evaluated by using two study objects, which represent two manufacturing cells, one from the automobile industry and the other from a Brazilian tech company. For each application, the guide identified distinct steps, due to the different aspects that characterize the analyzed distributions.
